Day 5--from the CyberAkumal

Had a great dive this morning--got to dive with "Tricky", and we saw 2 very large nurse sharks. One actually got up off of the bottom & started swimming while we were near it. SO COOL!!!! Frank rented a car today & we went up to Puerto Morelos to check out a couple of hotels & have lunch. The water there is gorgeous! Then we stopped at Paamul--the plan was to snorkel, but there was a lot of wave action today. There had been some storms just south of PM--of course we didn't get any rain where we were & it was frickin HOT at PM!!! We finally made it to Chemuyil & ate at Pizzeria Leo's--wonderful pizza! We may possibly do the skycycle tomorrow--unless it's 400 degrees here again. It has REALLY been HOT in the afternoons. Oh--we had a little excitement at the bungalows this morning--of course, it involved the group of teenagers that are staying in our section. One of them was screaming at the top of his lungs--cursing--banging things around his bungalow (and this is a group from a Baptist church in North Carolina!). Anyway, I informed one of the chaperones that one of her kids had apparently gone berserk, but two security guards got to him before she did. We were gone most of the day, but I'm thinking things will be quiet--the chaperone looked pretty p*ssed off. So, that's about all the news from Akumal today--we're headed to the Chomak for some Magnum bars!!

Glad to hear you're not letting it wreck your trip. The daily reports are great. Thanks!

Nothing worse than teenage idiots! I only rented resort rooms once to college kids! They were on the 3rd floor of the old lodge building. The restaurant was on the 2nd floor. I told them NO ****ing, puking, or spitting off their balcony. It wasn't long before MOM Betty is standing on the restaurant deck and a yellow stream comes from above. They lost their weekend, 3 day stay in the first 4 hours and their money!

Woo Hoo!!! Good sized nurse sharks in Akumal! THAT is exciting. They're a common site for us in Cozumel but I've only seen one in Akumal and it was small. In Coz we get them 6 ft+ and they regularly come out from under their ledges and free swim. Very nice to hear that there are some in Akumal. Hopefully they stick around and aren't just visiting for a summer vacation. [;)]

This is so bad!!! Folks think they can come down here and be so disrespectful, disturbing other folks..... I wonder how the "chaperone" is gonna handle things now.

I really want to hear what you think about Puerto Morelos. I am very curious and interested in your impression and also about hotels there! [:D]

Ugghhh...looks like the "spring breaker" types have made their way to Akumal...this makes me sad...hopefully they found it boring there...one can only hope. How cool though that you saw two nurse sharks...I have yet to see one in Akumal. Enjoy every minute you have left Iggy!!

Oh yeah, so you FINALLY talked Frank into renting a car(if only for the day, but still)?! I know last October you mentioned taxis being expensive because you had a large group. What did he think of driving down there? It's not so bad once you get the hang of it. Of course, I SAY that...but hubby does all the driving, lol. I am in charge of reading the spanish traffic signs and tope warnings, lol. Enjoy the rest of you time down there...every minute!

Looking forward to some diving myself next month in Akumal. The night dives are great if you haven't tried it. You see a lot more creatures that come out at night. I saw nurse sharks in the bay back in 2009. They can be hard to spot because they like to sit under coral ledges. You have to dive down and look under them or just get lucky and catch one swimming. I got some good pictures a video of them. Can't wait to get back there.

Cool stuff.  I've only done one open water dive in Mexico and that was in 2007.  I did a cavern dive in 2011.  Good times.
