Hi Kay.  I'm certainly not a techie, but here is a pic of the forum page.  Note the message in the browser.  Pretty sure it had the secured lock insignia in the past.  MB

I now post pics from my phone to FB and then cut and paste to the forums.  In the past I used my camera, uploaded pics to a third party holding site and then posted to the forums.  The Google photo platform was discontinued quite some time ago so I've just found it easier to do the other albeit the picture quality is quite compromised.  As far as losing older forum info, I think that is negligible at least from my perspective.  Thanks for asking.  Cathy (MB)

Cathy let me check on that.  It may be because the forum software is old, or a browser.  It looks fine on my end but we will dig into it. thanks

I do FB but I don't like it.  I don't post much.  Most of the people who caused so many fights on the forums here , are on FB , DOING IT THERE.
There are too many individual groups on FB pertaining to the same travel locations and many have issues with troublesome posters.  They keep breaking into smaller and more defined groups but the same pot stirring people cause issues.

You have to do whatever you need to to keep your revenue.  I don't think you'll be ahead in the long run.

I am mostly a lurker but check in regularly. I always look for trip reports, tips and hints from visitors, and of course try to keep up with happenings with the regulars here who don't 'do' Facebook.
There is a lot of talk lately about Facebook changing, who knows what that will mean. I do know more and more people are turning away from Facebook so maybe that will cause a resurgence in this type of forum.
My vote, for what it's worth, is to keep this forum alive for now.
Cheers!

Another thing I would like to add about on the 'pro' side for keeping this forum - a poster can remain pretty anonymous whereas on Facebook you are there for all the world to see. Say for example someone wants to ask about swimming with dolphins or turtles and gets 'educated' (shamed) by someone opposed to that practice. They likely won't feel as offended as they would if everyone knew who the culprit was.

I am an admin on both a conventional forum like this one and a Facebook group (for the same group). I am not a fan of fb and did this reluctantly. Our solution was to use fb to direct people to the conventional forum. Our forum software allows easy posting of pictures. The BIG reason for maintaining the conventional forum is archiving and search function. As mentioned above, try searching fb for s post. I am also seeing other groups that jumped on their fb wagon reverting to a conventional forum for these and many other reasons some of which have been mentioned above. I also find the LG forum very difficult to find. It was not like that before your last change. There was a separate "forums" tab on the home page. Also, info posted on FB can dissapear down the page rather quickly on a fairly active page.

Perhaps there is a forum add-on to make picture posting easier for people?  Or someone could write a tutorial?

There was one.   That's how I learned to do it.  But I think there's a small limit to how many you can have posted.  IIRC, I had to delete some old ones to post new ones.

Some great points in this thread.  I forgot how I much I search on LG to find stuff I remembered reading and need to consult later. The forums are a great repository of information.

The thing I don't like about FB is how much crap I need to sift through to find something I'm looking for.  LG has a much higher quality-to-crap ratio!

Thank you for your insights.  As we continually have to rebuild the site to be mobile friendly and we have over 1500 pages excluding the forums, for simplicity we decided to not give the forums a separate tab.

I can totally appreciate the benefits to anonymity a forum provides for scenarios as you describe. However on the flip side it does not provide transparency and there have been those who have abused anonymity to flame others.

From the forums, users tend to stay on the forums but not utilize other parts of the site, like our blog, etc.  Facebook does produce traffic to our website the data shows.  So the thought was that perhaps a FB group could serve both, have a community and integrate some of our best content for all.

I tried Kay, but it never shows up on my FB updated stuff. I am curious. If you are comfortable sharing. Does the LG website here drive business to you? That is the bottom line probably.

Id hate to see it go. I think fb and lg forum serve a vital function. Each has its own value. I still check lg out every day as well as some of the fb pages.

Crunch we post on FB daily.  If it does not come up in the feed, it may be a personal setting.   Do the forums drive business to us, no.   There are users even today who use the forums but do not use us to handle their reservations.   Not sure why, we do not charge a booking fee, a whole team works to make sure an individuals vacay goes great.

I follow LG on FB, but it's different than the forums. I like the forums better :)
My computer says the site is "not secure" like Mayan Boar's. I don't know when that happened though.

Hi Kay - I too see the 'not secure' notation on the URL.  I tried explicitly prefacing the URL with "https:\\", which would initiate a secure connection, and it timed out.  I suspect that your hosting service does not support the https protocol.  Since it used to be secure, I suspect this is a temporary or configuration issue.

As far as FB is concerned, I'm not on it, and probably never will be (though I'm mildly tempted a few times a year).
I do lurk here regularly, however, and would miss it mightily if the forums dwindled more...

It's actually https:// (rather than \\).  But you're right, the forums aren't TLS secured, but I'm not sure why anyone cares.  The forum not being TLS'd just means that the data isn't secured between you and LG.  It's not like you're entering credit card information on it.

My $0.02. I love coming here and chatting with friends. We all seem to love the Roo, though I have moved over to Cozumel. Many friendships were formed at the ABR and other places and times. Much of it facilitated by this forum.

I have never used your service, mostly because I liked to book AI packages, which included flights. Years back, that wasn't offered. Later on, you did offer them and I found that I was always able to beat the prices, and believe me, I wanted to you you folks. A sad story of the almighty dollar ruling....

As far as this forum of FB, I would miss some folks who will never do FB. Not that it is your responsibility to keep my social life active, but I do appreciate what you do by providing these forums. If you did create a FB forum, I'd certainly participate.

I'm rambling, not sure I am helping you out any or just taking up bandwidth....

Lovin life,
Bob

Kay,
I've been floating around since 2005 and like you mentioned in your first post, I've made many friends on these forums.  They aren't visited like they used to be but neither is MySpace (haha).. technology moves on and trends change.  I visit various Akumal-based FB pages and can still filter some really good information there.  However, there is going to be a lot more drama on FB.  Regardless of where LG info is placed on the net, I'll find it.  ;)

About the aerial tours... those were really neat, especially when locating bucket list spots in relation to the condo!  Have you ever considered using drones to capture these photos?

Darren
