Forums and facebook

Good morning everyone.

As some of you may know our forums have been in existence since about 1998.  Many friendships were formed, and together we collectively have been through many of the major milestones together and had a lot of fun doing it.

Since 2009 when facebook and trip advisor came on the scene, participation the forum has not been what it once was.

My question to you, if we start an LG facebook group would you participate?   I am trying to see if there are forums we can create there but so far I have not found that as an option.

Thanks for your feedback.
Kay

I would participate in that, Kay. It's so easy to post photos on Facebook along with other advantages.

I agree with Thomas!  I would definitely participate and the ease of posting pictures there is such a plus!!!  I am rather computer challenged so trying to post pictures on here is next to impossible for me!!!

I may not post often but coming to LG is part of my morning ritual!!!

I agree the participation on LG Forums has dropped dramatically and that makes me sad. I still look every morning though and participate when I can. That being said, I understand where you're coming from Kay and I would join on FB; even though I don't use FB as much as I use to.

As much as I like all things Akumal and Riviera Maya, it would not be enough to make me go back to Facebook.  I realize I'm in the minority (it seems).

Another non Facebook user here and although I visit LG twice daily, not sure if I would be willing to join.

Hi Kay,

I am not on face book and have no desire to do so. I value the L.G. forums and post daily on the Breakfast Club unless I am traveling.

  Good to see you again,
Bernie

Kay, thanks for reaching out.  I for one would not have a problem with that and so much easier to post photos. With that being said, there has been a dramatic decrease in the participation on all LG forums and would hate to see those who do not participate on FB drop off.  Double-edge sword if you ask me.

I think LG has done a terrific job over the years with the web cams, aerial view of properties, the blogs, etc.  Wondering if some of those features will be continued and presume so as you are still a travel booking site, but looks like your site has been unsecured for some time now.  Not sure what that is all about.

My thoughts, MB.

I'm with Susy and MB.  So much easier to post photos on FB and easier to access.

Cindy here.
Chris is on Facebook, and I look occasionally, but  not willingly. I do not like being targeted for ads, and do not like having to look for the people I want to communicate with. I know Chris likes the ease of posting pictures, but for me the LG family of those I've met and would like to meet is important, and I would hate to see my "family" dispersed and quit or disappear.

I am an administrator for "Friends of Akumal Bay" on FB and belong to "Akumal you gotta love it".  I am sure there are lots of other FB sites in re RM and travel etc.  I would hate to see the LG forums and BC come to an end.  FB is just not the same.

Facebook has a ton of negatives - no privacy, selling our souls to Zuckerberg just so it will be "easier" to connect with friends and post pictures.

The biggest problem is there's no real history (try doing a search here and then do one on a Facebook group).  I'm (unwillingly) on Facebook, so I might join, but I much prefer this form.

Perhaps there is a forum add-on to make picture posting easier for people?  Or someone could write a tutorial?

I am on FB but it is totally different than LG. I would rather stay in touch with the folks here in this smaller format.
I understand that keeping the forums going is a hassle and a cost but I don't want them to disappear. Thanks Kay.

AASB 2018 created good memories. Tammi is already booking 2019!

Hi Kay!
I would use a Loco Gringo FB page.  As Chris mentioned there are already a few Akumal centered FB pages out there.

I miss how busy the LG Forums used to be - lots of information and fun.  We have made many friends from our interactions here and would hate to see it end.

It is not difficult to post photos here.

MB thanks so much for your reply.  Can you explain what you mean that the site has been unsecured?  We have full security certificates on it all.  Please let me know because if something is broke we certain will fix it.

The aerial tours have been discontinued because it became too expensive to hire a plane and shoot the photos.   Blogging we always have, and the webcams yes. We actually just secured another location for the Tulum webcam so that should be running again soon.  We have in recent years added digital ebooks for the area and for various types of vacationing, families, ruins guides, etc.  Many of our properties have digital guestbooks for our guests with reservations.

What concerns me greatly is your comment about it being unsecured.  Please let me know and you can always email me at k.walten@locogringo.com

Thank you.

Even though I mostly lurk, I'm going to add my $.02.

I'm on Facebook. A LOT. It's my go-to for keeping in touch with family and friends who are not Locogringos. HOWEVER, the first thing I do every morning is check out how everyone is doing on the Breakfast Club.

IMHO, moving this to Facebook would be a death knell for the BC. I follow several pages on FB (various ones on Akumal and Roatan). I don't like how the commenting would work on FB compared to BC. At least with the BC, every posting is sequential so it is easy to follow the day-by-day happenings for each poster and it's super easy to catch up if one has gotten behind reading. On FB, that would all be lost. Postings would be made by individuals and comments made on them, scattering them willy-nilly on the page. I personally would quit reading because it would mean trying to figure out if Chris and Cindy's post from today is actually under their name today or did they reply to someone else's post from three days ago (which would require me to scroll around searching for it).

On top of that, I'm pretty sure we'd lose some of our favorite posters, like Badger and Beach Bernie and others, who will never join Facebook.

Not sure if this all makes sense, but you asked for our opinion!

This is all a very good discussion, thank you.

A few of years ago when we tried to upgrade the forums software so things like photos would be easier, etc.  many, many people pushed back so much and complained since it was new and there was a learning curve, so we kept this version of the software we have here.

If we would decide to keep the forums, and look for new software we may lose the content from the past, which in the past was a concern to members.  Would this be a concern for you?   We have to look at costs as well.

If we move to facebook, we understand that some of you don't want to cross over.

My heart aches in all of this, by nature, I want everyone to be happy and be of service to all.

I wouldn't worry about losing older stuff.  Life moves on and I tend not to look back too much.

Ideally there could be both.  A small forum.  Maybe just BC (this could be the social one), and then one each for the major locations.....Akumal, Tulum, PM, as I assume those are the areas most your customers book for.  That would be only 4 threads to maintain and host which I assume would be cheaper and then you could also have a more robust presence on FB.
