Back in Puerto Morelos!

Well, we're back, we were so tired of the winter that never seems to end in Northern Wisconsin and Babs needs some more dental work, and then we were able to find a decent price on flights and our favorite condo was available, so here we are. Today is Thursday, we arrived Tuesday afternoon. did a brief unpacking and headed for the square.

Major road construction going on right now around the square and for a couple of blocks to the South. Found out from locals that improvements like this usually happen in an election year so that the politicos have something to brag about before the election. However, many locals that we talked to are upset that the work started during Easter week, typically one of their busiest weeks and just before the beginning of low season.

Photos are taking forever to load, but here are two of the construction mess.

It looks like I lost all of my photos on my other report, hopefully I'll be able to replace them after we get back home.

Patty, yes, next spring should be a blast!

Tomas and MB, I should be able to get more photos up later today.

It just took 20 minutes to upload 4 photos, so I may have to wait until we get home to add some, but here goes.....

El Pesquero was completely empty of customers other than us Tuesday evening, later a few more folks showed up.

    Appetizers

I had to have my favorite, the Seafood Mixiote

And Babs tried the fish tacos

We couldn't find our friend Roy's food stand Wednesday morning, but spotted this one near the square

He was selling Tacos al Pastor, Babs and I split 3 of them and they were delicious (15 pesos each)

In the evening we were meeting friends at El Pesquero, where I had the medium shrimp cocktail

And Babs had an enormous vegetarian burrito

After asking around town we discovered that Roy's breakfast food stand was temporarily on Ave Ninoes Heroes and found him the next morning

I was feeling extra hungry and ordered 3 tacos just for me, and although I couldn't finish them, they were delicious, as usual. Roy remembered us and I had remembered to bring him a Tecate for his later enjoyment.

Tacos from left to right, chicken, chicharone, smoked pork.
Tacos still 15 pesos or about 80 cents each.

I am so hungry, thanks Paul
BTW, what is the green stuff on the tacos al pastor? Looks kind of like watery guacamole.

Cat, looking forward to seeing you next week!

Jamie, you're right, it was like a watery guac, delicious.

Gem, we would love to see you and Tatt next spring!

Our first 3 days here the weather was perfect, with light winds and very little sargassum coming in, but yesterday and today it is very windy and the sargassum is rolling in.
We talked to a couple of local fishermen yesterday and they showed us photos of a nice Marlin their client had caught and released earlier that day. Too windy for me to consider going out.

I haven't taken a lot of photos the last couple of days, but here are a few.

We had pizza at I Wanna Pizza Thursday evening, it was good, but we prefer the ones from My Little Italy, best part of this one was the very flavorful cheese

We picked up some fruit and veggies on Wednesday, the small plum-like fruits were being sold on the sidewalk in the Colonia, very sweet, but they have a large pit.

We do like to cook in our condo, I found these green chorizos at Chedraui, ended up taking them out of their casings to fry and this morning I mixed them with scrambled eggs, yummy!

Dinner last night was breaded fish for Babs

And garlic and butter grilled fish for me.

Badger, love the food pics.  Those scrambled eggs with the chorizo are making me hungry and the fish looks delicious.  If the winds let up, do you plan to do some fishing?   Will be fun to meet up with Holly and Kat.  Enjoy, MB

    Thanks Tooter!
MB, if the winds let up I may go fishing, but I always bring some gear with me so I can also fish from shore.

    Very windy yesterday

A cruise ship early this morning

This ship docked at the commercial pier yesterday, rather tricky trying to dock with the strong wind

For lunch yesterday we purchased some tamales from a street vendor, 20 pesos each and some of the best I've ever had

Dinner last night was at El Campanario

    Fresh bread with herb butter

    T bone

    Bleu cheese stuffed tomato

Nice food porn! Everything looks delicious, though the DW would veto the green chorizo just on appearance.
The guys at Akumal Bay just can't keep up with the sargasso...feel bad for them. They piled it yesterday, then cleaned it up this morning, but there was more building along the shore as they worked, and a lot more floating in.
Disappointing they've torn up the streets around the square, but maybe they'll be somewhat finished by the time we get there; fingers crossed.

Mapes, I'll keep you updated on the construction.

    Cat, calm winds today.

    Gracias Crunch!

A lazy day yesterday, Babs made her "famous" banana pancakes for breakfast with bacon. Forgot to take pic.

For lunch I made tacos with leftover seafood, coleslaw, and blue corn tortillas, they turned out great, will definitely make them again.

After lunch we wandered into town for a few supplies and stopped in at El Pesquero for an Ojo Rojo, a few minutes later the skies opened up and rain poured down. No other customers, so some of the meseros gathered around the TV to watch scantily clad women in music videos.

For breakfast this morning I made a scrambled egg dish using up the last of the green sausage with onion, bacon, mushrooms and cheese, it was very good. BTW, the main ingredient to make the sausage green is parsley and I will buy some again on a future trip.

Crunch, I've always liked a girl who likes a good sausage.

MB, I love to cook, especially desayuno on vacation, next time you are here at the same time as us you're invited.

Our maid needed some time to clean our room yesterday, so we decided it would be a good day to hit the beach bars. The beach to the North of the pier is wide, flat, and beautiful.

For lunch we stopped at My Paradise and shared an order of Ceviche Mixto with Mango, so good that we will definitely have it again

We got a chuckle out of this sign at Unico

A container ship came into port yesterday

For dinner we tried restaurant Fonda Americana in La Colonia, very good hamburgers

The head bartender at El Pesquero is named Willy, we have been friends for many years and Babs has brought down gifts for his daughter Allison ever since she was born  3 years ago. Last night we stopped at El P for an after dinner drink and we were pleased and surprised when Willy gave Babs this coffee mug

Breakfast this morning at Roy's, two tacos with ham and eggs, two with a shredded pork mixture, delicioso as usual and his hot sauce has just the right amount of heat

Didn't take many photos yesterday, but we were glad to welcome Twirley and Catalina to PM mid afternoon, I will try to take more photos today.

We all enjoyed a great meal and good wine at Tanino's last night.

I had a Caesar salad with shrimp (notice the flat slabs of rock used as our plates)

Twirls and Cat shared a pear salad they really liked

They also split a shrimp dish that they said was great

All four of us shared a sinfully delicious dish called Chocolate Fusion  for dessert

Babs had a pasta dish, but my photo did not turn out.

With one bottle of wine and one margarita, total bill was the equivalent of $74 U.S. before tip.
