US consulate closes in Playa Del Carmen

So yes we have cancellation insurance for our trip to Cozumel via Playa. Should we use it? I haven't been too concerned about the bombs and the shootings. Maybe I am naive.

Barata, I wouldn't cancel a trip over it, just use normal precautions. If I could we would be glad to join you!

I wouldn't either.  I think you will be fine.  However, nobody can predict what will happen so do whatever makes you feel most comfortable.  When are you supposed to go?

We fly out Saturday, meeting up with the mean wives club :)
The president (of Mexico) is going to be at the Fairmont Myakoba for thenWorld Ocean Summit, maybe that's what all the fuss is about?

For sure I would not cancel either. Social media tends to whip up the frenzy on this kind of thing. Not that I deny bad things are happening in our favorite place, but the lack of reliable information is a problem here.
That, and I know our trip insurance would not cover this LOL.

Guys maybe it is because the President is coming. We are trying to get more details. Most of what we hear is speculation.

There is only one person that works at the consular agency in Playa so perhaps it was better to close the agency?  I am just speculating as we know what we have read in the newspaper which does not give that much information.

I read that an explosive device was found un-detonated on another ferry.  Scary stuff, we're talking about cancelling out June trip.

My understanding is that the second ferry is from the same company and there are issues with the cartel and the owner of the ferry line.

We did read an update:
Quintana Roo state – Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution
Exercise increased caution due to crime.
According to Government of Mexico statistics, the state experienced an increase in homicide rates compared to the same period in 2016. While most of these homicides appeared to be targeted, criminal organization assassinations, turf battles between criminal groups have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by U.S. citizens. Shooting incidents injuring or killing bystanders have occurred.

There are no restrictions on U.S. government employees for travel in Quintana Roo state, which includes tourist areas such as: Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and the Riviera Maya.

We are trying to clarification from the Cancun Embassy office.

If we were going, I would be seriously considering cancelling.  At the very least, I'd stay on the resort.  Seems to iffy right now for me.

Yup.  Mexico haters say "See, I told you it was dangerous".  Mexico defenders say "It's just xxxx, it doesn't affect me"  (I guess I'm in the latter   because I'm still going, but I read Novedades de Qroo almost daily to get a better picture than what social media presents)

Last in Mexico Mar 13 to 20, 2018 [18th trip to MEX, 14x to RM (1998 to 2018), 9x to HMB (2006 to 2016)]

had to tune into the forum today and was going to post on this topic. Glad to see others talking. We are booked over Easter and friends and family are making me question my sanity. I've been there too many times to believe everything I read/hear. Taking a ferry wasn't in our plans, but I will say it is now officially out of our plans (we weren't going to go to Coz anyway). I seem to recall a bump in threat levels every spring when all the college kids are ready to make morons of themselves, maybe I'm wrong. We're staying at Barcelo for 6 days with our 2 kids and no thoughts of canceling, 0%. Keep the convo going! good to hear info from boots on the ground. Can't wait to get there!

ps.. we don't frequent PDC anyway. we may head into Akumal or Tulum this trip but not PDC.

We will be crossing tomorrow on the ferry to Coz. As we have been told the Boca Caribe line has been shut down due to the problems being experienced.  Will let you know how things go.

Kay, thank you for the info. WaPo had a good article that I can link later.

I know that the repercussions for taking on organized crime down there can be horrifically brutal but if the authorities can detain the malfeasants then it will make my job of convincing my wife that we shouldn't change our vacation destination to Canada that much easier.

The state department also commented to avoid these neighborhoods:

The neighborhoods are bordered by Avenida Benito Juarez, 50 Avenida Sur (Highway 307), and Calle 34 Norte.  U.S. citizens should avoid those neighborhoods until further notice.

Been following super close.  Haven't stayed in Playa for years but we do tend to want to hang out in Playa for a day so this is a super bummer.  The hot spot advised is right in the heart of Playa.  We usually try to hit Walmart there if we forget anything and that's right in the middle of this. Anyone know if my Sam's club memberships can be used there? I know online it is not international...

We have not had any issues using our US Sam's Club membership in Playa.

This isn't helping to assuage Mrs. Tricky's fears (or mine):
