For every person that the new snorkeling rules scares away, seems like there's 2 or 3 more that come willing to pay for a snorkel tour.

    Last in Mexico Mar 13 to 20, 2018 [18th trip to MEX, 14x to RM (1998 to 2018), 9x to HMB (2006 to 2016)]

Even Paamul was busy yesterday !!  We stopped for lunch on our way down to Mahahual & the restaurant, pool & beach were really busy !!  So, I can't even imagine Akumal !!  We were actually going to stop there for lunch then changed our minds -- glad we did !!

There are still places to go in the Mexican Riviera that will sut your tastes whatever they may be.  Secluded beaches with excellent snorkeling, crowded nightlife with all inclusives, family resorts, old-style and laid back villages like what Akumal used to be.  They're all there - just do your research, or let Kay and Gary do it for you if you just tell them what you are after.
Mahahual is an excellent option for a laid back fishing village (with tiptop snorkeling) that still has modern conveniences and supplies. But it does require a longer drive if you are flying into CUN. There is a very busy cruise port five minutes away from Mahahual but the cruise lines built their own little city there (Costa Maya) to capture the lions share of those tourist dollars and most of the passengers dont venture out beyond those gates.  I love Mahahual and will be returning there soon.

I'd much rather have sand in my shorts than snow in my shoes.

I think it's quite obvious that this little slice of (what used to be) heaven is gone. I'm just glad I got to experience it hassle free a few years back, and understand how nice it USED to be. Between the ridiculous snorkeling rules and regs to the crowds.....nice knowin ya Akumal....it was fun.

We still found it enjoyable in November.  Staying on HMB, but going to Akumal most days.  Not like it used to be certainly.  I have mixed feelings.

I have seen it like that in March, several years ago. When folks got off the dive boats, they had to weave their way through the crowd to get to the Dive Centre with their gear.

AASB 2018 created good memories. Tammi is already booking 2019!

We were there in September and it wasn't bad.  On Saturdays and Sundays it was crowded and noisy down by Lol Ha,but, the rest of the bay was quiet and very peaceful most of the time.  It's high season right now, so, it's gonna look like that for a while.  If we do go back, and that is a big if based on the rules for fins that no one had a definitive answer about, it won't be until October when it's really pretty quiet.  We are both getting too old to snorkel without fins, and I have a heart condition, so, I absolutely need all the help I can get.  Not using them is out of the question.

The cold weather in the north is bringing everyone to the tropics.  We've been busy helping people with their vacation plans, and they are looking at lots of areas not just Akumal.

Remember the huge piles of Sargassum?  I'd rather deal with that than these crowds.

^^^   That has come to pass Bruce.  I'm looking at it right now.   Beach nearly deserted but heaps of sargassum at the shore. Strange for a sunny day in March.

Crowds mean demand, demand demands supply, marrying supply and demand means jobs and profit, jobs and profit mean good things for the average Mexican.

But I hate people, especially crowds of them.  Most of you in this thread are alright though.

That's pretty common to see during Spring Break times and especially during Holy Week for the Mexican National's.  Unfortunately due to my husband's career in education and being at the mercy of major holiday weeks to travel we have to deal with these crowds everywhere down there when we go. Traffic down through Tulum along the shore past the ruins is an absolute nightmare.

I'm anxious to start watching the camera again to see how all these rules have actually impacted (or not) the size of the crowds.
