Another snorkeller arrested in Akumal bay today

Another innocent snorkelling tourist arrested at Akumal Bay today.
I was walking over to Lol Ha today to get something out of my loicker and they were again arresting an innocent tourist for inadvertently snorkeling past the wrong bout. Quiet young couple surrounded by 4 police and about 6 "guides". They had no idea what was going on, but were to?!d the man snorkelled into the wrong area. They were then made to pack up their stuff and escorted by the police to the arch. The wife was allowed to go and the husband was put into the back of the police truck with 3 officers and driven presumably to Tulum police station. I tried to find the wife to help her, but I couldn't find her.
This was witnessed by about 15 waiters at Lol ha as well as people on the beach. The private security guard at lol ha discretely took a photo on his phone so a picture of the event does exist. He also called someone and I am praying it was someone to help this couple.
We have been to Akumal bay twice this week. The 1st time we were threatened with arrest and the second time I actually witnessed an arrest. All for something the guy didn't even know was wrong.
This is outrageous and needs to stop. If anybody knows any reporters or travel writers who may be able to publicize this information please have them message me.
If anyone thinks this couldn't happen to you at Akumal bay you are very wrong unless you do not snorkel.

Crunchie, I am distressed to hear this.  I'm sure the wife is worried sick and the husband who presumably is in the Tulum jail is pretty scared.  Just a horrible experience for this couple.  If you hear any updates, please let us know.  MB.

This is awful. Heart breaking.  I regretted not visiting Akumal on my last trip, but my worries were that exactly this would happen... except I'd be the one in the truck heading to jail.

We didn't know we were making memories. We just knew we were having fun.

Ridiculous and so frustrating.  Do the people making these decisions really believe this is going to go un-publicized?  Seriously?  As word gets out to other tourists, and it certainly will, there will be cameras rolling on every incident and often they will be sent live so it cannot be "lost".  As negative images are splashed all over the media, it won't matter that Akumal is a small place compared to the likes of Cancun and Puerto Vallarta.  All that will matter is that this is Mexico, and this is proof it is not a safe place to travel.  Good going Profepa!

This is just so sad.  I guess that's one way to keep the tourists away...geezo!

True, for people like us.  For the type that's willing to pay for a snorkel tour, they'll keep on coming.

They'll just re-frame it and say something like "see what happens when you don't follow our rules".

It has been reported and verified from others on the beach that the tourist in question flipped the guy in the kayak and was violent in nature.

My feeling is that it won't.  This is being orchestrated to drive away long-time people like us and replace us with people willing to pay to snorkel.   In a decade from now (should it survive that long), people will think pay-to-snorkel is normal.   People who snorkel for free will be mocked as cheapskates and places where you can snorkel for free will be described as "nothing good to see - if it was any good, they'd be able to charge people to go there.

I've seen it happen with so many other things.  It's called monetization.

If the people keep showing up for the tours with fists full of cash, things will never go back to normal here. I'm so thankful I was able to enjoy Akumal when it was just another great beach to snorkel. No rules....no hassles....just water, coral and tons of sealife.

I feel bad for anyone who spends their hard earned vacation $$ only to find themselves in the middle of complete chaos and turmoil. What's even more amazing is the larger resorts with the bigger pockets can't seem to stop the madness. One would think that they are going to eventually drive the tourists out of there.....but then again, those tours and the crowds I see on the webcams aren't getting any smaller, and the resorts in the area seem to still be selling out.

Just a sad thing to watch happen for those that have been there before this circus started a year or two back....I want to go back to Akumal badly, but can't see myself risking my vacation with so many other places that have zero hassles. What an absolute shame.....

We are going to do a post on the blog about where we call can write and complain, on the federal level about this type of action.

In case you noticed that the other thread with the same name disappeared, I am to blame. No conspiracy or censorship, there were simply two threads with the exact same name and first post and the second thread only had one post by El Grand Chico, so I merged the threads. El Grand Chico's post now appears in this thread.

Verano - do NOT snorkel in front of Lol ha without a guide.  Get in at Secrets and snorkel down to ABR and back.

It was still great in many ways. I have very mixed feelings, but that is because I remember how it used to be.

We have been going to the ABR for over 12 years and getting ready to book again, but we love to snorkel and with all these rulings, what can you do?  We were last there in August and told the rules by the dive shop at the resort.  We followed them, but many did not.  We got hassled and lied to by tour operators and I called them on it.  They just grinned, and then left us alone.  I remember going snorkeling all over and very few people.  It used to be a great place.  Greed has ruined it for all.  Does anyone know of a place with decent snorkeling and a few turtles, elsewhere?  I was thinking Pavo Real.  Any suggestions?

Even though I was almost arrested, crunch and I did later successfully enter the bay down by Secrets and snorkel down to ABR without being "molested". We did this many times after "The Incident" and we had short fins on and no vests. Now that we know where to go I would not hesitate to return. Puerto Morelos just doesn't provide the snorkeling opportunities that we demand. We snorkel all day, every day.

    murphy,
I am pretty sure Beach Bernie has stayed at Pavo Real (which I think is in Tankah), and possibly TwirleyB. If they don't see this thread and reply, maybe send one or both a PM.
