Half Moon Bay 9/7-9/15-2017

It's been a long 3 years since the last visit to Akumal. So here is a little trip report as an update from someone who has not experienced the Akumal Bay Drama that has occurred over the last 3 years. We have been coming since 1981, have mostly stayed on the Bay in Las Casitas or the Akumal Caribe. But after the last stay, during the construction of Secrets both of those options were out. We stayed on Half Moon a long time ago and did not go back just because of the ease of snorkeling in Akumal and the beach. So I was pleasantly surprised to find good snorkeling and quietness on Half Moon.

After looking various transportation options we decided to rent a car. It was cheaper than doing a transfer and renting a golf cart. It is a solid hour and a half drive easy during off season but I don't think I would do in high season. Driving into Akumal is very depressing. The road has disintegrated into a series of monster pot holes with Hawkers trying to stop you from both sides of the road. It is especially bad up to the Arch. Then as you approach the "public access" there are always 3-4 cars parked in front of the access with 6-8 guys hanging out on their cars waving brochures. Very sketchy and unpleasant. We always drove to LolHa parking and they are happy to have you as long as you are at the restaurant. They were great, we asked to park while we fished for 3 hours and then ate, no problem. The same for swimming and snorkeling.
The road from there on out is good except in from of the dive shop and CEA where the potholes are the biggest! Then almost all of the road on HMB has been nicely brick paved.

We stayed in a condo on the North end of HMB at Nahil. Beautiful condo and pool, only 8 units on the ocean, newer construction and great kitchen. LG did our booking and Kay really went out of her way to help us with an issue. Just remember if you are booking in the low season, this is the time that many owners remodel their condos. Always ask if there is construction at or adjacent to your condo!

Aside from that we really enjoyed HMB it was quiet, good snorkeling, beautiful view and away from the craziness of Akumal.

Little Moray...

Lots of nice brain coral...

I was really impressed with all that I saw, went in at the North end in front of the condo, a little tough and shallow but not hard to swim. The reef was full of small fish, damsels, sargents, sea fans, lots of brain coral, big schools of reef fish like Surgeons.
For two days we watched incredible waves on HMB, at the North end was like the Akumal Pipeline with this perfect wave about 5 feet high. Then the waves at Buena Vida were huge and coming one after another. And this was all with sunny beautiful weather!

We went fishing our third day with Francisco, just lucked out he was in his boat waiting for a fisherman. My motto is "we always catch fish"! We are not going for a boat ride we are going to catch fish! And we do! I was hoping for some Dorado/Mahi but not the season. After 3 hours I was begging please no more fish...

A great day fishing is better than many things...
So we took a small filet home and did a great Veracruz style sauce with the Barracuda, tomatoes, Serrano's, onion, olives, capers all over rice, YUM!

That was the only meal cooked. I love LolHa and have many friends still working there. If it is not on the Menu ask nicely and you will be amazed at what they will do for you. Here is Tom's Seafood Platter (not on Menu)

Fried Grouper, Fried Shrimp, Grilled Lobster

Other than eggs for breakfast I only ate seafood the entire time we were there. My favorites at LolHa, whole fried Grouper, Fish Burger, featuring breaded fried grouper filet, breaded fried shrimp, mixed ceviche, Veracruz style seafood cocktail. We had em all!

Wrapping up, I think if I have seen the last of Akumal except to visit as we journey further South. Most likely I will go to Cozumel. We spent 4 weeks there 3 years ago and found it to be really friendly, small and we did not feel imposed on by the cruisers. It seemed to be more of a community without all the density and traffic on the mainland.

Wherever you go you must use LG for your bookings. More than one time I have needed help and having Kay and Company behind you is priceless. She was dealing with my little problem as she was salvaging her property in Houston. Unbelievable service!

Great report!  Really appreciate your honesty.  We go to Cozumel in May and love it.  It hasn't changed.

The last couple Novembers we have gone to PM instead of Akumal in November.  However, Akumal still calls to us so we are trying again this November.  Staying in HMB and only renting a golf cart.

The sentiments you expressed about the drive in from 307 and what is going on in town are exactly how we felt last time we went.  We also book Akumal thru LG and always have found it to be perfect service.

What a great fishing day when you are begging for no more fish lol.

I thank you for getting me to Cozumel, after reading several of your trip reports several years ago!

It is almost the whole coast has just exploded in the last 5 years. I did like Mahahual and that would be perfect if it weren't such a long drive.

Look forward to your thoughts after November.

It has exploded!  I would love to try Mahahual if it wasn't for that drive.

Fun to see and read a new trip  report!:)  I've never been to Cozumel but would certainly give it a go after being to Isla Mujerus a couple times.   To you fly directly there or into Cancun and take a boat out from Playa Del Carmen?

I don't mind the drive to Mahahual---------I just keep seeing the pot of gold at the end of the road trip!

headin' south again soon!

You can fly direct to Cozumel with most carriers. Or take the Ferry from Playa del Carmen.

We also have watched the sad demise of the old Akumal~yet it still calls to us.  This last August we did the golf cart and had a blast.  Being low season, Half Moon Bay seemed almost deserted.  But we stayed at ABR and it was totally crazy.  Overtaken by Europeans (nothing against them ;)   And children everywhere!!!  Certainly not the old laid back place, where the bartenders drank along with you.  The beach was still quiet, which is where we like to be.  But walking down passed Secrets and Lolha...what a mess!  Once you get beyond the Dive Shop on Half Moon Bay~it's all good again...

Us too.  If they ever get that separate Half Moon Bay-only entrance road built, I'll be back in a heartbeat.

Is high season driving on 307 that busy now?  Yikes!   Is it busy but still smooth flowing with the 4 lane highway?

Any police problems at all--checkpoints around Playa?

headin' south again soon!

DurangoTom, nicely done report and pics. You had a great fishing day, for sure.  Nice to know how accommodating the LolHa is.  That seafood platter looked delicious.  Agree with you on some of your observations.  I was just down there 9/2-9/9,  Thanks again, MB.

Gracias for the report, Tom! Loved it. Our trip to Cozumel last may was probably our absolute best.

Great TR.  I have always been curious about the snorkeling in HMB.  I have heard everything from it is great to don't do it, there is a terrible rip current and you will die.

I've also wanted to try renting a car, just worried about being pulled over and having to deal with corrupt police.
would love to see more pics of the condo and the beach where you stayed.

Thanks All, glad you enjoyed the report.
Teri, there are some really great photos of the condos where we stayed here on LG. Look for Nahil condos.

Hi Tom.
I'm a little late in responding to your TR but I wanted to say 'thank you' and I enjoyed reading your input.

I made it back to ABR this past May for the 10th AASB celebration and enjoyed my time there but fear I won't be returning. Obviously, it's not the same place as the old days but between the high cost of the resort and the changes in Akumal I will find other places to enjoy my vacation.  Recently I booked my first trip to Coz for May 2018 and got the direct flight r/t from Charlotte. I'm looking forward to it.

Thank you again for your pictures and detailed information.  Glad you enjoyed the trip.
