Human-caused, indeed.  This stuff is up from Brazil, where the massive influx of nutrients has encouraged growth due to deforestation.  Hasn't improved since the day or two before we got here.  I'm not one to harp on such things, but it's definitely not a good thing.  Since we're leaving tomorrow, though, it'll probably be gone by Thursday.

How was the rest of the trip Craig?  Are they still not allowing snorkel tours in the bay?

Hey, Crunch and Kay!  Tuesday was our last day there...no snorkel tours that day, but then again, pretty much no one around with all the to-do.  There were one or two days with little sargassum coming in, but most days it was pretty awful.

Sorry you had to deal with all that stuff.  The thing about Sargassum is it just comes and then gone and you can never predict.

Is it actually good for the beach and the environment?  It looks like something that's human-caused, and that's almost always bad. :)

Well, I'm no scientist, or environmentalist, but, even though it is human caused, it does carry a lot of composting value which some of the resorts have taken advantage of, and, it slows the erosion on the beaches.  That's what I have read, but, I really have to proof of that.  I have found that most things are good for something and not everything that seems bad really ends up being bad.  Other than obstructing swimming, and smelling really bad, I wonder what damage has been done by it to the natural world.

We haven't been back since 2015 either.  It was awful.  I just looked at webcams and its still there.  Bassman66, Im curious about your other ideas for good shore snorkeling. After retiring, we had finally worked our way up to spending a month or 2 each winter down there, now I'm reluctant.

Yeah, it was bad back then.  Doesn't look anywhere near as bad to me now on the webcam.

Check the Akumal webcam today and the piles of sargassum on the south end.  Looks like it's getting to 2015 levels... ah well, a little sargassum never hurt anyone.  I saw lots of interesting fish and sea life under the rafts of seaweed feeding when I was snorkeling.  I remember in 2015 the ABBWR workers raking endlessly and it never seemed to put a dent in the volumes of sargassum washing up.

It's pretty horrible right now.  I feel back for the grounds keepers (I see a staff person on the beach right now).  Must be hard on all people who depend on tourism as well.

Was there a storm recently?  It appeared to be clearing, but it's back in force today.

The weather has been rainy, and will continue that way for the next five days, with winds increasing.  Hoping it chops up the mats a little.

The beach is looking a lot better on the webcame this week than it has for a long time.  Of course this could change quickly but it is somewhat encouraging.

Last in Mexico Mar 13 to 20, 2018 [18th trip to MEX, 14x to RM (1998 to 2018), 9x to HMB (2006 to 2016)]

I've noticed that, too.  Hoping Fall is a non sargassum time of year.

Looks awful.  Notice how it gets trapped in the piratas "guided" curcuit?  I sure do not see anyone in the water.

Was looking at the webcam yesterday about 8:30am MX time and onshore was minimal seaweed but up in the upper left, just outside the line of buoys or ropes, was what looked like a very large clump of it headed to the beach. Was a total mess by afternoon.
