That's too bad...I guess as long as it's not like a few years ago when they were steadily hauling dump trucks loads away, it's not the end of the world. :)

It's no where near the way it was in 2015, and even if it was, it's still Akumal, and we're going in just a few more weeks.

We were there in 2015 when it was bad, and still had a nice week....we just swam around it for the most part. It's all the roped off areas, fin bans, regulations, etc. and all the hassles that are keeping me from going back. Too many other great snorkeling destinations out there that are 100% hassle free....and after all, that's what vacation is about for me.

We stayed at Secrets Silver Sands last December (2016) and the seaweed was a massive problem.  A multi-man crew would spend the entire day moving the seaweed from the north end of the resort's beach to the south end, where they dumped all the seaweed back into the ocean.  Then the next day they did it all again--for the entire week we were there.

Is this the new norm for the Riviera Maya?  I hope not.

All depends how you define "this".   If you mean lots everyday, then no.   If you mean lots one day (or even a week), then nothing other days, light other days, then yes.

At this point in time, it's hard to say with any reasonable level of certainty what the situation will be next week, next month, next season.  It's being studied but it's a very complicated model.

I thought there was talk about putting nets offshore to catch some of the seaweed - did that every happen?

It's too bad, not just for the environment, but also for tourism.  You see a lot of un-educated (and educated too, I guess) tourists complaining.

The beach cam today is reminding me alot of 2015.  Hopefully it will not be for as extended a time period as it was then.

I'd much rather have sand in my shorts than snow in my shoes.

I was there in 2015 (April) and it was pretty bad, but the webcam shot these last few days has been brutal!!

We were there in March of 2015 and heading back in 6 days!  It's looks worse than 2015! Bummer.  Hard to relax when you see those guys slaving away trying to clear it everyday!

No sargassum outside of my office?!
Of course, there's no beach, no Caribbean, no Lol Ha, and no margaritas, either.

Given a choice, I'll take sargassum and Akumal over my cube and lunch meetings any day.  Hurry up June, I need my yearly fix!!

Doesn't look too bad today.  It's good for the beach, good for the environment, bad for tourism, but, on the up side, maybe it slows down the piratas.

Is it actually good for the beach and the environment?  It looks like something that's human-caused, and that's almost always bad. :)
