sunwing/grand oasis tulum scam

Wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them.
We booked the grand oasis tulum thru sunwing vacations. We were told we would be in the superior garden view fun rooms. At the time the agent told us the hotel was 500 meters from the beach which wasn't a big deal to us.
Now we find out that the fun section isn't at the 5 star grand but in the 3 star oasis section. Also we don't have access to all the restaurants or bars of the grand. We have argued with sunwing and they say for an extra 300.00 per person we can upgrade to the grand section. Our booking says grand which to me is a rip off.
We are heading there January 10. Sounds like we've been duped.
Anyone else have this happen

Sorry this has happened to you

A few of us on this forum know about the 3 classes of the Oasis Tulum resort

The proper Grand (most $$$) section which is on / very near the ocean with access to all facilities

The regular section ($$) which restricts you from certain bars/restaurants

The FUN  ($) aka cheap section closer to the hwy than the beach (most restrictive)

Hope you can get an upgrade

We have talked with agents and they have agreed that we were misinformed. Also just in the last week or so the hotel has changed their website to list fun section as a 3 1/2 star.
I'm gonna try to talk to a manager but I'm thinking we've been screwed over.

Wow, I can see from your op that the wording used by Sunwing is confusing.
If my booking said Grand, I would expect to be placed in the Grand Oasis.  However, you said you were told you would be in the fun section but, I would expect, like you, that there was a fun section of the Grand.
I wouldn't be a happy traveler if that happened to me.  It sounds like a very well planned "bait and switch".

It's Sunwing.
Nuff said!!

Sorry this has happened to you. I agree, this sounds like the classic 'Bait and Switch" done to perfection.
Rip em a new one if you get the chance. I wouldn't hold my breath though.

I've been building my case. Emailed reservations at hotel. They say I'm booked at the grand. I emailed back asking which restaurants and bars do we have access to. They responded all.
If things turn out differently I'm gonna let them have it.

So our travel agent acknowledged that sunwing/grand oasis tulum were misleading clients by selling "fun" rooms outside of the grand oasis properties. Also that "all-inclusive " doesn't mean having access to all the grand amenities. They have offered to wave any fees for us to change or cancel or vacation. Hopefully others have the same luck we did.

Google......... Sunwing complaints.

Never again.   Worst airline-travel agency I've ever dealt with.    I give them -1 out of 10.
Noted here is a good ex of why Sunwing has few return customers.    http://www.cbc.ca/news/su...epless-night-1.1107367

Cancel and book with someone else if you can.

Here's one that sounds exactly the same as the problem you're having. Sounds like they have caught more than a few unwary folks in this little scam.

http://www.bbb.org/kitchener/business-reviews/tours-operators-and-promoters/sunwing-vacations-in-etobicoke-on-1133128/complaints#

It is the complaint dated July 03, 2015 (scroll down a bit to locate it) although parts are redacted, it becomes clear quite quickly as to which resort they are referring to.

Thanks guys and gals for all the information. We have changed resorts and filed a complaint to Sunwing, grand oasis tulum and flight centre. Flight centre is currently working on "something " for us. Will keep you posted

The Oasis properties has long been playing the game of having three different classes of bookings on a single property and being fairly militant about keeping the lower class "riff raff" guests in their place.  If you want to enjoy the full resort you had better be prepared to pay the Grand price or just accept being told no a lot.

We have stayed at the Grand Oasis in Cancun several times, and paid the extra to have the full resort amenities.  We liked it, but, there were a lot of problems on the property, including cockroaches the size of small cats, broken doors, and smells in the rooms.  The staff are not very friendly, at least not the managing staff. We tend to be fairly low maintenance guests, so, we just lived with most things.  We once tried out the Riviera Maya Grand Oasis property, and were just as underwhelmed with the staff.  Not friendly, not helpful, and suspicious of their own guests.  We had booked rooms at both the Cancun and RM Grands, staying at the first for a few days, and the second for the rest of the trip. When we transfered to the RM property we were put first in a Garden room, and when we went straight back to the desk to get the Ocean front room we paid for we were first accused of lying about what we had paid for and then told there aren't anymore ocean front rooms, but, they could put us in a condo on the beach.  That sounded great, but, then we were driven by golf cart to our "Grand Oasis" accommodations. Seeing an old mattress leaning up against the wall outside should have been our first clue.  The place was run down, smelled a bit off, and the furnishings were old and mismatched. In the end, we made our decision to look for another resort chain.  That's how we found ABR, and after seven trips and falling so deeply in love with them, we will never go back to Grand Oasis resorts.

Teri A thanks for the information. Definetly will never recommend anybody to go to the grand oasis chains after the horror stories we've heard. So glad we we're able to change resorts without a penalty. We were at abr in April and loved the laid atmosphere. This trip we are bring our kids with us so looking for a bigger venue. We've booked the grand sunset princess but will miss the akumal area although we will be jumping on the collectivo and heading down there
