Stressed about renting a car!

Not about driving, been there done that, but about the rental itself. I have read all the threads and done a ton of research but I am more confused than ever. The rates and the reviews are all over the place.
I am looking for the best rates with all the mandatory insurance and the ability to drop it off at the airport at 5am on departure day.
Suggestions?

We used American last week - no problems.  They seemed to share the drop off with 2 other companies.  Lots of good reviews from Avant as well.  I had a reservation glitch with them (my fault and the result of a common name)

"The rates and the reviews are all over the place."

1st of all, don't stress too much over this.   I don't find it's worth it to spend so much time to try to get the very best rate.  Sort of like driving half way across town to save a few cents a gallon on a fill up.   Just make sure you aren't way overpaying.   Also quite possible that best rate = old, beatup car (found this out the hard way once).

This (rates and the reviews are all over the place) is unfortunately a result of the companies to deliver a consistent level of service.  I've been pleased with Easyway in the past (rented from then 5 times) but others have had nightmares with them.  I went with America this time and it took forever and a day to get the car while others say it was quick for them.   I'm thinking of Avant next time due to the good reviews I'm seeing here (of course, this could totally change by my next trip).

Sort of like, Riviera Maya Car Rental Roulette!! although it is most likely your rental will turn out fine for the most part.

America Office is open 24 hrs but definitely contact them and get it in writing

We showed up early to their downtown office 1 hour early. No one there. I learnt my lesson

Other options:
1) drop the car to their Tulum office  one day early and take a taxi to the airport
2) next time, if you have an early flight out, book the previous night at one of the 2 airport hotels (Comfort Inn or Marriot)

Thanks so much everyone for your help.
A little frustrating that the car rental might cost more than my flight but I refuse to let it ruin my time in paradise.

16-22 a day car rentals are long gone.....it''s 30-75 a day depending on seasonal rate.  The Loco, loyal/frequent (which barely exists anymore) or AAA discounts do still happen however.

I just booked with Easy Way online...Even though our credit card becomes primary insurance they are saying we still have to get ALI insurance..no idea if that is correct or? For 8 days it's running us about $242 and that is with that insurance and tax.
Hoping for a good experience!!

It's my understanding that most credit card insurance will only cover collision damage to the rented vehicle (whether or not your card's coverage is applicable in Mexico is a whole different story).

I may be wrong but I don't know of any credit card that provides you liability insurance on rented vehicles and that's why they are requiring you to take their liability insurance. Considering the potential cost of an at-fault accident with bodily injuries, I would never skimp on liability coverage at home or in Mexico.

We just get $0 deductible whoever we rent from. Worth it for the peace of mind. Rented from Isis in March and they were fantastic. For our upcoming trip, Isis didn't have a van available when we needed it, so we're renting from Avant based on reviews here. They are bringing the car to us. So far have been great to work with. We had a bad experience with Easyway so never again for us, but for others, they've been great. Good luck and have fun!

We too rented from ISIS in March. They were truly fantastic. They delivered the car we asked for to us, at the time they said, and with a full tank of gas and they charged us what they said they would.. No hidden fees such as extra insurance .. They also came and picked the car up when they said they would. This was an experience we have never had in all the 4 years we have been renting. We did the zero deductable too.. Like carolslc said peace of mind... Will be using ISIS from now on.. Great prompt customer service and a small family business.. Thank you ISIS..

Carolslc/Jaf: What was the daily rental cost

Crunch mentioned they were more than the others ($60 $ + a day?)

Here is the quote we got from them.

March 28th to April 05th = 8 days // $49.95 x 7 = $349.65usd (one free day on the weekly price)
$14.95 x 8 = $119.60usd (Zero deductible insurance)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
TOTAL =$469.25USD
--------------------------------------------------------------------
This was for a brand new Chevy Aveo which was an automatic...They came and picked the car up when they said they would and it was Easter Sunday. I email before for a quote then forgot to email back and book and about 3 weeks later he emailed me back to say they were getting low on cars for the high season and if I wanted to still book... We won't be going anywhere else unless something changes with them.. To us it's about getting a decent car, the convenience of having it dropped off at our house with enough gas that you don't have to worry about pushing it to the gas station.. Well worth the peace of mind..

Below is the quote we received from Isis. We got the Jetta. They brought the car to us at the airport, full of gas, and met us at the airport to return it. Yes, more expensive, and worth every penny.

>>"We have the Chevrolet Aveo and VW Jetta, either is $54.95usd per day and the full insurance (zero deductibles) is $14.95usd per day. The delivery and pickup to/from Cancun's Airport is of no charge."

Isis is worth a little more in my opinion.  You get what you pay for.

I rented from Easyway 2 years ago...I was quite concerned because they seemed like they had no clue.  I had a quote and a confirmation with all insurance and $0 deductible (which I have never taken in the past), they gave me an "ok" car. About 2 days later, I was involved in what could have been a very serious accident at 60 mph (but work made me take an intense driving class) and no one was hurt!  The car was made drivable so the next day we drove to the Easyway office, gave them all the other drivers info (no police involved) got a new car and continued on our vacation...no a single problem!

We rented from Alamo (off airport pick up, airport drop off) April 4 - 11,  VW Jetta (their version of a full size car - not mine) for $234 USD (car rental and 3rd party liability insurance only).  Good deal, no problems.

We went with America for the 9 days. We will pick it up at the Airport and drop it off in Playa Del Carmen the day before we leave since we are staying there for our last two nights.
Compact car, 9 days, all insurance = $292
We got a shuttle thru Best day to go back to the airport since we have a very early (7am) flight home.

Thanks for all of your comments. Cant wait to get there!
