Akumal Beach this week, First timer

Hi and thanks in advance. I'll be in the area this week and would like to spend a day on the beach in Akumal with my family. I'm looking for a restaurant or palapa/umbrella next to the water to spend the day snorkeling, eating, family time. If anyone that has been there lately has a recommendation I'd appreciate it. We'll be driving in and need to find a parking place as well. Do I need to book a reservation or is it just first come, first serve? Thanks! Brad

Go to Lol Ha.  You can park there and as long as you're eating and drinking you can hang out on the beach.

There is a parking just outside Akumal, think it is 50 pesos, also another one inside the arches next to Turtle Bay Cafe and Cueva del Pescador restaurants, can't remember what the fee is for that one. Lol-Ha is the only one right on the beach so that is your best bet.

Not sure where you will find a palapa/umbrella since you are not staying at HAC/bungalows....the area with the palapas are for those stayong at the hotel and bungalows.....but if you go south, not to far, past the dive shop you you may finds some shade if you get there early enough....just don't go on the private part....there are some palms right around the new resort building area you can get to....

There is also a private spot by Lol Ha you can rent chairs but there isn't a lot of shade......

There are no palapas or umbrellas for rent.  You have to bring your own. There ARE umbrellas on a sand patio at LolHa where y ou can sit and have a drink or food, but they are for patrons.

There is paid parking to the left after passing under the arches.  IGNORE all the piratas who tell you that you must pay them etc.  They are all lying just to get your $$$.  Either pretend you don't understand them (speak pig-latin or any other language - you can even make one up!  LOL), and just keep on walking.  They WILL try to intimidate you!  It's much like running the gauntlet at the airport.

Thanks for all of the information. Just wanted to let folks know we ended up renting a palapa and chairs from Lo-Ha for the day and it was great. We paid at the main "nicer" restaurant. They rented us a palapa and nice (blue) chairs in the little fenced in sandy area next to the big palapa covered restaurant. It wasn't cheap, but it was worth it with 2 adults and 2 younger kids for our one day. Had a great lunch in the restaurant too. We walked south away from the action and did see some good areas under some palm trees for shade and hanging out. I could see hanging under those palms could be a great spot of you had an ice chest/food. It was obvious to me that Akumal is a special place even with the development, we'll be back. Hasta Luego Amigos.

I believe it was 500 pesos per person for chairs and a bit more for the palapa and it included the use of restrooms and showers.

That 500 pesos didn't include any meals??

Up until last year we would rent chairs in the roped off area next to Lol Ha and spend 4-5 hours and eat lunch at the restaurant. The chairs were 50 pesos per person and the palms there gave good shade. Last year we were sent on a goose chase to both restaurants where no one seemed to understand what we were asking. Admittedly our Spanish is nonexistent. By the time someone told me I could rent two chairs for 500 pesos starting at noon we were over it and just found a place under the palms until we were tired of snorkeling and the we would head back to HMB to our condo. We always ate lunch at Lol Ha. We loved to get our spot next to the restaurant at 9 or 10 and stay til three or four. We would snorkel read drink eat and repeat. We would usually spend 70-80 USD a day there, plus generous tips. We were very disappointed last year to have to change our routine. However I do think there was a food and drink credit included in the 500 pesos but we really wanted to do mornings there and they would not let us have chairs til 12.
