Fish photos and videos from November - Puerto Morelos, Akumal Bay, Yal Ku and Halfmoon Bay

We spent two nights in Puerto Morelos and shore snorkeled by the Ojo de Agua again . Some shots from PM .

I think this blue angel lives right by the ojo itself cause I saw him last year . I pisasa'd this
shot as with most of them but there really is a lot of colour in PM .

These guys stay close to the ojo too

This octopus had moved or I never would have seen him .

Saw one of these at every location but Halfmoon .

Then on to Akumal Bay

Cheryl got all these great shots

This big guy was hanging off the old moonrise a few different days , I got this one

On to Halfmoon Bay

 All Cheryl's again

I got this guy too . He did a big display because I nearly swam right on top of him .

And some crazy stuff at Yal Ku . As always Yal Ku can be so different day to day . Some days the halocline and brackishness were strong and sometimes mixed with agitation silting of a light colour . The main channel near the paid entry had alarmingly little in the way of fish compared to other years . The clouds of sargeant majors and tangs were much smaller . The narrow inland channel with the wooden stairs , also very , very empty compared to other years .

There were all those sardines last year and maybe they thrashed the balance more than we knew .

Some little back bays are almost carpeted with upside down jellyfish . I don't know the effect they may have but one effect may be good .

The bay directly behind the lying lady statue across from the main entrance was the only place I got these group photos of a Midnight parrot and another parrot , maybe some mid cycle rainbow , let me know if you recognize him . There were also groups of French angels swimming with Grey angels , full grown and a dozen and more , and with those big parrots at times and a Queen angel and lots of full grown tangs , all in this one bay . They would do laps of this little bay and go in and out of a good sized hole in the end wall . This only happened at four in the afternoon or so and until closing on three different days .

I saw some of the grey angels plucking and eating some of the feelers off of the jellyfish one at a time . Maybe this food source keeps the big angels around .

This is the parrot in question .

With his boys just hanging and staring at me .

The Queen

Midnight

This rainbow I saw from shore .

I mostly shot video and so most of the stills are vidcaps and in failing light with the halocline but
they are to document the behaviours mostly .

There is a Youtube Video with these guys and more and some old ones on the same channel .

Turn the volume down .

This one is just Yal Ku with some overlap from the first video .

Awesome photos, Juan! Those spotted eagle rays are so timid I can never get as close as you were. Nice job!

We ran into Rainbow Parrots at all three , Akumal Bay , Halfmoon Bay and Yal Ku .
This guy off ABR had his own remora .

This one was in Halfmoon Bay

And we had multiple Queen angel encounters too and they didn't always hide like they usually do .

We stayed at Corales Suites last year . I did a last minute reservation this year with them but when we got there they hadn't checked the mail on a Sunday . We knew to pick up the key at Arrecife Suites ( same owner ) after hours and after a short discussion they gave us a beachfront corner room at Arrecife Suites with a kitchen . We book with LG in Akumal but wing it elsewhere .

GREAT photos! I think the picture of the fish in question is a mid-cycle rainbow parrotfish.
THANKS for sharing!

Really great pictures & video. Thanks for posting them. We are heading to PM in March. Looking forward to seeing the reef there as we have never gone out to it.

+1 (1)
Thanks for the nice comments . I always enjoy everyone else's fish pictures but a trip report didn't seem necessary so I threw them on the main forum  . Our main camera is an Olympic Stylus Tough -1080 and is 3 or 4 years old with lots of miles on it . It has a two part locking system and we have purchased aftermarket batteries to have spares . We had some sargassum and waves some days and water conditions and visibility are the main factors in clear photos . I spent an hour and a half in very shallow water in Halfmoon Bay as that was the only clear water that day and yielded very very little . Our last day , with two cameras with dead batteries I swam over the octopus in the clearer photos and he reared up quite a bit more than the photos . The Olympus camera can have some amount of second life on the spent battery if it gets some rest and so I got it out of my pocket and got the video of the octopus and also this Cow Filefish . The photos are vidcaps . I don't think I would have timed the moment that he would expose the blue belly and his horn unless shooting video . You loose some definition compared to still photos but you also don't get twenty pictures of a half framed fish . In five lucky minutes I got some great stuff with a once dead battery in the same area I worked hard for an hour an a half a few days before . I also have hours and hours of running video of the coral and fish to spend some quiet time with on cold winter days .

I messed up and posted an eleven second video in from July of this tortuga coming too close to me as another example of luck .

AWESOME! Some of the best I have seen. I liked the red fish best. They seem to be extremely shy and evasive.
