Alamo.  There's a catch though.  Because one of us arrives the night before everyone else (to avoid a red-eye from the west coast), we are picking up the car in Cancun (at the La Quinta hotel branch) and then dropping it at the airport when we are done (no charge to do this).  This (off airport pick up) made a huge difference in the quote.  I understand that, for many (most?) the hassle of going into Cancun to pick up the car would not be worth the money saved.  For us, however, it worked out as we needed to stay somewhere cheap for one night before heading down to Akumal for the week.

Be prepared for Alamo to add on mandatory insurance charges and other fees. In the end they all come out to about the same price.

Like what?  PLI (3rd Party liability) is the only insurance required by law and we are taking extra of that.  We have a free additional driver as part of the agreement so they can't up-charge for that.  I have an email from Alamo confirming that there will be no charge to pick up in one location and return to another (and also stating that if the local agency does add a charge for this, Alamo corporate will refund it). Last time we went down there were no unexpected charges - we were billed, to the penny, of what the quote said...  I think I've pretty much covered all the usual "gotcha" angles.

You might be ok. I don't have experience with that particular office. If you don't mind a very large hold on your credit card you won't be charged extra. My guess is they will want to put a hold on your card for the value of the vehicle unless you purchase full coverage insurance.

I have a credit card with a sufficient limit to absorb the full cost of the vehicle, if absolutely necessary, which would allow me to leave the country and deal with my credit card's underwriter to claim it back.

Me too.  And I do the same thing.   My guess is that most people don't though.   Most people know very little about how insurance works either which works well for the rental companies - they prefer people know as little as possible.  That's ok, people can just pay more and never need not learn the nuts and bolts of it.

I have been trying to read up on all the car rental advise on here and the other forum. We have never rented a car in Mexico before. Just a couple of questions I hope someone can answer. I think we will use America Car Rental as per Vancouver Sundog's advise. We are wanting to rent in the middle of our stay for a few days. It looks like we can pick up and return a car in Tulum? We have no interest in driving down to Akumal from the airport. It also appears that America's prices include all the necessary insurance options including the zero $ deductible. Is there anything else we would need to add on to our rental price?

I plan on renting a car in Tulum again for my next trip

They always offer to pick me up at my hotel in Akumal but I have heard stories that they can get delayed so I don't mind taking a colectivo to Tulum

Last time Bernie offered me a ride

They are a few doors east (towards the ocean) on the SE corner - easy to find

Don't book with Tulum car rental as they don't have the full insurance packages as America does
