Hey Badger, it was good to see you at the Halloween party at LBV. Next year I can bring you my old pirate costume. ha ha
Jackie and I walked past the ABR last week as well. We reminisced about a lot of great times shared at the old ABR. We will be staying at the new ABR in March and Jackie was so excited to see that the old mattresses are gone!!!
We met a very nice security guard who gave us a mini tour from just outside the property. All our information is according to him. Just to the north of old building 5 will be building new building 1. These are the most luxurious units with a new pool next to them. Old buildings 5,6 and 7 will be 2, 3 and 4 respectively. The newly added fourth floors will also be luxury units.
It was a very bitter sweet walk past the old ABR last week and we are hopeful the new ABR will bring us many more great times.

EDIT: We saw LG member Hoppybrewer yesterday in Puerto Morelos, he said that he walked by the ABWR a couple of days ago and was told by an employee that the "Beach Bar" will in fact be a Sushi Bar. I don't know if this means that there will still be a replacement for the Moonrise Bar or not. Guess time will tell.

Maybe it will combine a sushi bar & a booze bar- that's a possibility!

In the grand scheme of things sushi on the beach in an open bar tropical climate seems like a very dicey way to test your stomach

For many years when we stayed there, the beach bar at Grand Oasis was a sushi bar.  Don't know if it still is, but it was quite popular when we were there.  Not my favorite, though.

Thanks for the info, wetone.  I just meant I can take or leave sushi, but I know a lot of the guests really like it.  It'll be interesting to see if it will be as popular at ABBWR.
Hope you enjoyed your vacation at the Grand Oasis.  It used to be our favorite before we fell in love with ABR. Our friends have a condo there, lucky dogs.

A Chinese restaurant in my neighborhood offers daily "All the Sushi You Can Eat" for $20.  I've seen it and sniffed it, it's days old, has lost its sheen, curled at the edges.  Sushi in an outdoor restaurant in a hot climate???

ulle-----the sushi is made fresh daily at the bar in front of you ---it is in a refrigerated showcase----most selections have no seafood in them---

Well, we met with Lele and Alejandro yesterday. Photos to be added to this post soon

Everyone is super busy getting the main pool, buffet, lobby, bar, and all the alacartes ready by Dec 8th. Lele still says it will happen

Only a portion of rooms will be ready for Dec 8th (for those already booked)

Remainder of rooms to be completed by early January

Met many of the staff all busy working.

Some items of note:
  • New tile being laid in the main bar/lobby. Glass doors may not be in place by Dec 8 but these are movable
  • Lobby / checkin stays where it is
  • Palapa walkways are in place between all buildings - see Badger's photo
  • New wooden deck being built out from the main bar
  • New palapas (flat bamboo roof) about to be erected along the beach. These are in place by the snack bar and where the concrete pad/ Chessboard was. Likely over the sushi bar
  • Rock façade on the room /building going up
  • Main pool retiled (Beige). 3 smaller whirlpools now
  • New concrete around the pool
  • They may have a viewing area above the snack bar - take your drinks up there - nice
  • New spa building built beside bldg. 7 - all palapa / wooden floors
  • 2 new pools - - concrete being poured - may not be ready by Dec 8
  • Some very choice rooms on the front of bldg. 1. Overlooking where the old massage hut was
  • new concrete paths along the beach - instead of the red bricks

For anyone who is in Akumal right now, do you think they will have any rooms completed by December 8th?  I am booked for later that week on the 12th.  I want to relocate to Barceló if there is no chance that they will be finished.  ABR swears up and down when I have called, facebooked and emailed them that they will be.  Please anyone who is down there, let me know what you think. THANKS!

Are the Restaurants all free standing?, or will they be on a rotating basis, like the Italian and the Mexican back in the day?

take me to your blender...

From what I could tell they were all free standing.  They also say there will be no limit to the number of times you can go to any of the restaurants.  If they are operated like most big resorts, they will alternate days off.

Some new photos from a person staying at ABR on rooms, and the main bar. Small pools look like they are almost ready to fill with water
