I believe the recent bad reviews at the Palladium had to do with a couple of power outages. AC was impacted as was dinner times (dark). I have been to the P more than 20 times and never had a power outage . Apparently it caused many guests to be grumpy and the resort addressed it as quickly as possible.

The Colonial is currently undergoing (mostly cosmetic) renovations. i.e. new linens, drapes, mattresses, paint. Some rooms may be done by October. No noise.

I will send you a link to my blog which has menus, lots of pictures, some recent positive trip reports. The Palladium has a huge repeat guest following.

Kelsey,

We've been to numerous resorts since 1997.  Our first time to the GP was in 2011 to the Colonial.  We liked it so much that we went back in 2012, 2013 and will be there again this year.  Don't worry about being a first time guest  Alot of us use private transfers for the convenience and time saving.  The only nice thing about the included transfers is that you do get to see other resorts.  If your package includes the transfer and you opt to go private, make sure and let them know, so they won't be waiting on you.

I have been to all of those several times. The Rius give you the use of all except the Palaces. Nice beaches great activity teams gooood food. We found the drinks not great (may have changed) and the AC not so good. The Iberostars were always great too. Paraisos beach is rougher but great for walking. Great entertainment and good food and drinks. We are returning to the Bahia in 3 months. We just had our daughter wedding at the Palladium. The P has a no reservation a la cartes. Great beach. Great activity team also. Try booking a Mayan suite!! They rank high in my book!!!

Actually in Akumal this time!! April 7th

Thanks again everyone for all the feedback! I am between iberostar tucan/quetzal cause the beach looks amazing and the GP... Although I am leaning toward the GP as there seems to be more night life and I enjoy a larger resort :)

Ya I saw that, looks great!
A few more questions - how strict is the men's dress code? Are jeans ok? Also, can men wear sandals?
How frequently do the golf carts run?? Do they go everywhere?

There are trains (one or two depending on circumstances.). There are golf carts that go to lobbies and villas. Just get to a lobby and no problem getting transportation.

Looks like you are are in good hands with the responses you have received so far.  I can only back the Palladium votes as I just love the resort, getting ready to head back for our fifth vacation there...this time in the Royal section.  We have also stayed in White Sands and Colonial.  We love the resort for probably more reasons then I can list but looking at your comments I can say the beach is amazing and wonderful for walking day or evening.  You can continue the walk up a path to the salt water pool area also which is another very special location in the resort to most people who have gone there...it is just wonderful.
There are pools to choose from and some have swim up bars and others have walk up bars with washrooms and outside showers. Some are adult areas and some for everyone so there are the options of finding either one you like or a few to visit.  The lobbies in the evenings are another favorite of ours...we love that there are a few and you can take the train from one to the other, stay awhile or all evening but each lobbies has a unique vibe to it and this can change ...what I mean is one I loved one year one I loved more another year...different entertainment etc and shops etc so it is never boring in the evening at this resort and of course there is a disco for those who want to dance. There are so many options during the day also for on site activities and for those of us who are lazy there are lots of chairs to relax in where ever you decide to go.  The food...lots of it everywhere and many options for all tastes.  The fact that you don't have to make reservations is something we love so we are never tied to a certain type of meal but can decide what we feel like and just go..there are a couple that do require the reservation but for the most part you can decide on the fly.
If the room is important to you then look at the white sands riveria where they are all junior suites...bigger rooms with big bathrooms and tubs and separate showers.  We loved white sands as the location is close to he beach access and loved the lay out of the rooms.  We are now smitten with the extras in the Royal section and are looking forward to a stay there...something to check out.  As for the first time guest, we have found that each time from the first trip until our fourth trip we were treated well by staff and we have enjoyed the wonderful service they provide.  We are outgoing and I think that helps.
Private transfer...did the bus our first trip and never again.  For us it is worth the extra cost to arrive at the airport and get right off to the resort...we then have a bit extra time before we leave because the bus always leaves earlier then we need to.  Each year we have found it just a great way to start our vacation.  The companies we have used are AGI and USA transfers and both have been excellent.   Hope this is helpful for you.
