Rental Cars

Whats your favorite rental car company when arriving at Cancun airport? We have used Easy Way http://www.easywayrentacar.com/ in the past. But that was 7 years ago. I know things are slow to change.

I'm done with Easyway for awhile. I have loved them for years. Something has changed the last couple of years.  I will let you know how our trip and car rental goes with the next place we try in a few weeks.

We had a bad experience with Easyway in 2012. I'll be looking for moonaround's recommendation. I'm thinking of trying America/Cancun/Caribbean this next trip.

We used America/Cancun/Caribbean twice in the last 6 months and were completely happy.  The best part was that there were NO surprises on the final charge.  You can mention Loco Gringo or show a AAA card when you get there for 5% off.

We used Easyway this year in early July and have used them for several years.  That said, I think we are done.  I got a quote through the Canun/American company for our stay and it was $619 for 15 days, and it included all of the insurance with a  0% deductible for a VW Gol.

I contacted Easyway to see their price for a GOL.  When I first contacted them they quoted me $800.  When I sent them my quote from Cancun, after a few emails they agreed to rent us the car for $600.  I was explicit about wanting a car without paper plates, but a metal plate because we have previously had some issues with the Policia with the paper plates.  I also requested a car with a working radio and AC.

I know it states "the model car or comparable," on anyone rental's website when you rent a car, I get that.  Anyway, when we arrive they had a VW Gol for us, but it had paper plates and also no radio.  When I put my foot down and made a fuss about the car not having what I requested, they offered up a super old Nissan Tsuru that looked like it came over on the Mayflower. It was rode hard and put away wet.  I had to produce the email trail, which I had printed because they didn't believe me at first and thought I was being difficult.

I went back and fourth with the guy and he wanted us to pay an additional $100 for a Nissan Tiida.  When I told him no, he said I was trying to take advantage of him.  I told him that we had previously rented from him for the past six years and that one year we had a rental for 41 days.  He still made it seem like I was trying to get something for nothing.  When I mentioned to him that on numerous occasions we had booked a small econ car and upon arrival they didn't have it and we ended up with a bigger car (Nissan Tiida) as a free upgrade he agreed to give me the Tiida for no extra cost.

The whole back and fourth took over an hour once we arrived at their office and was a real pain.  What I thought was funny is, it ended up being a car we had a few years back, because we recognized the detachable radio that was missing its volume knob.  Oh, and it still had a sagging front bumper that hit everything just like when we rented it several years back.

I think next trip we will use the Cancun/American company.  They offer all the insurance and a 0% deductible and their price was close to what I ended up paying with Easyway.  We have rented from them previously and never had any problems.

In general I like Easway, but this incident has me inclined to give American/Cancun a try next year providing their prices are good.  If American is high, I may end up rolling the dice and using Easyway again.

We used ISIS last week.  I emailed them and booked through their Playa office.  They met us at the airport with the car.  We did all the paperwork in the parking lot and left with the car.  Super easy.  He met us back at the airport when we were flying home.  I highly recommend ISIS.

I just rented a car down there last month and posted my follow-up on TripAdvisor. My experience was great and I hope to have similar luck during future visits. One of the reasons I went with America vs. Cancun or Tulum is that their prices are all-inclusive of ALL insurance (except for the tire and glass that I mention below). Remember to mention LocoGringo and they'll give you 5% off, as someone mentioned previously. Final damage: About $275 for a full-size car with all the insurance options. Here is part of it:

One of my biggest concerns going into this trip was renting a vehicle for the first time and it actually turned out to be a great experience so I wanted to share that info with those of you that may be in a similar situation as I was several months ago.

We booked through America Car Rental and requested a VW Gol Sedan. A few days before arrival, I e-mailed them to confirm that everything was in order. They promptly responded that they would be waiting for me. We didn't see them immediately as we exited the airport but we quickly spotted them off to the right. The man called a driver, who was there within 5-10 minutes. He drove us to their place of business, I filled out the paperwork, paid with USD (exact change rounded up to the nearest dollar), and left a carbon copy of credit card. Even though they said a hold would be placed on my account, nothing ever showed up. I did take all insurance, including the additional $5/day for tires, glass, etc. insurance.

They did indeed give us the exact car we requested, a four-door VW Gol, which fit four people, four suitcases, and three backpacks. The car was near spotless but I took pictures of the entire exterior and made sure to point out any blemishes to the person that was completing the checklist or whatever you call it. The vehicle looked brand new on the inside and only had about 25,000 km on the odometer (or close to 15,000 miles). I've never even owned a car with that few miles!

All was said and done and we were on our way within 30 minutes. The car functioned perfectly getting us to Akumal, grocery shopping twice, to Coba and back, and finally back to the airport. I only would put up to $200 pesos in the gas tank at one time and I got out of the car each time to verify that the pump was zeroed out and that no funny business was taking place. To top it all off, I found it much less stressful driving down the 307 than driving back home. Sure, I got passed a lot but I was respectful and stayed in the right lane when possible. No one honked, no one flipped me the bird, nothing. It was a refreshing change from what we're used to.

We returned the car this morning and we were on our way to the airport within 15-20 minutes. A man came out from the office, verified that the car started and that our gas gauge was at least at what it started with, and verified that any scratches on the car were marked on the original checklist. After a minute or two, he told me that everything was "perfect", returned my credit card imprints, and stamped my original receipt as final. He also said very clearly that, "there will be no additional charges."

To sum it up, I stressed a whole lot about nothing and the process was super easy and stress-free. I did meet up with a LocoGringo user during the week who had quite the opposite experience with his car rental agency... but I won't mention that company's name (Although, I see he already beat me to the punch in a previous reply to your question!)

I looked at the website for ISIS, Playa del Carmen. I love that they have free pick-up/drop-off at the Cancun airport with 3+ day rental. But they only have manual transmission cars! The two automatic choices appear to be permanently sold out on their rates page. I never did learn to drive a standard, and Mexico is probably not the place I want to learn. I'll check back as our trip gets closer. Maybe they'll buy one between now and then. :-)

Did you email them?  I did last week several times for our trip in November and Edgar was very responsive and helpful.

Thanks Crunch! No I haven't emailed them but that is a great idea. I should know better than to trust a website to be 100% accurate.

No rental agency at ABR

But places like Easyway and Caribbean will come to your resort, pick you up and take you back to their office in Tulum for the paperwork

Last trip, I booked and went to Tulum on a side trip with friends. They had a car waiting. It took 15-20 minutes. Then dropped the car off at the airport

We rented from Easyway in November 2013. They were going to deliver the car in Playa del Carmen for no charge. We ordered a VW Gol. When they arrived, they brought a different smaller car what was not working well. The Easyway guy even told us it was making a strange noise but that it was no problem. We debated about taking the car, but we had to vacate our condo in PDC and head to Akumal. So we took  chance. Before we wrapped up the car delivery, the Easyway guy says we owe US$30 cash for the delivery charge. What!!  Anyway, we paid just to avoid a major hassle. The car performed modestly for 11 days. It was a bit embarrassing because the car engine made a loud screeching noise in the lower gears. Unsettling, but hey, this is Mexico. When we too it back, we mentioned the $30 extra charge and the manager was surprised. No problem. He said he would immediately put in a $30 credit to my credit card. Well, that was a joke. We rang them a few weeks later, and of course, they did not have a clue what we were talking about. We will never rent from them again - bait and switch on the car, junk vehicle, and unexpected charges.  Next month, we are going to try America-Cancun-Caribbean and hope for the best.

We use Americacarrental with no problems .
We don't stress them too much renting the smallest , cheapest car possible with Airport pick up .
Problems arise with ALL renters concerning specialty vehicles and remote pick up/drop off .
We have been getting nice new cars and only the one option to consider on extra insurance .

Please be happy always

Hi all... I just got back a few days ago. I had a great experience with America/Caribbean/Cancun. Great price on a new mid size car with all insurances. I mentioned the locogringo discount and got that at check in. It was a $1000.00 hold on your credit card for a mid size car. My credit union flagged the charge. They let me use their phone to call the US and let my credit union know it was fine. They were very professional and great service. I checked my card when I got back in the states and the charge was released as promised. I think a economy or small car is a $600.00 hold.
Before using them I thought I would contact Easyway since I have used them for years and let them know what I was getting and let them know again about my past experience with them in May. I didn't get a response.
