When you pull in to the pumps the driver should get out and walk back by the pump. Look at the meter and make sure it is zero’ed before the attendant starts pumping.  Read more…

Good article, also beware of more than one attendant, sometimes they will try and distract you by telling you something like your tire is low on air, while the person pumping the gas manipulates the pump to overcharge you - had this happen at the Pemex on the east side of 307 in Tulum once.

They tried the old "point at the Pump" trick with me, once........Didn't work as I watched the guy doing a quick switch!  Needless to day, the attendant looked a little embarrassed and I got in the car and drove off!   This was at a Pemex north of Akumal on the east  side of the highway.

It happened to us also in Tulum, last april,  first station (Pemex 11144) north of Tulum, on the 307.   I tried to watch the guy at the pump but another guy distracted me in front of the car and, after, they did the trick of the 500 pesos changing to a 50 pesos.  We were stressed because we just had the car and it was our first experience to buy gas so they succeeded ripping us and I was very mad at us after but it was too late.  Lesson learned!  After that, we paid only with 100 pesos and checked the guy carefully no matter what others were doing around!

Attendant at Pemex on west side of 307 north of Akumal tried the 500 to a 50 switch on me in May. After calling him on it (with more than a few expletives)  he decided that it would be in his best interests to give me my rightful change. Love the people in Mexico but  so many of these guys are nothing but friggin thieves.

I did it a little differently. I told the attendant we wanted $200 pesos worth of regular and showed him a $200 peso note. Then watched him and the pump carefully. When he finished I handed him two $100 peso notes. He looked at them for a second then nodded his head and smiled kind of a "ya got me" type of smile. I said gracias and then gave him his tip. Sundog and I had good laugh and went on our merry way.
Yes I know you shouldn't have to do business this way, but I'm afraid it's the way things are done there, and getting into a confrontation is going to do nothing but get you p*ssed off and ruin your otherwise good vacation.

And today at the Pemex just south of the CUN airport on the north-bound side...  I got 358 pesos of gas and the guy tried to switch a 50 peso note for a 500 peso note.  I expressed my displeasure, and he said "okay" and gave me 150 pesos in change, but then had the nerve to ask for the eight pesos difference, as if he hadn't just tried to steal $50 from me.  I told him what I thought of him and got in the car and left.  Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I don't know Spanish so I don't think my words conveyed everything I wanted to get across.

I will note that the new Pemex just south of Akumal has a system where you tell them how much you want, and they type it in and that much gets dispensed automatically.  That relieves the worry about the not-resetting-the-pump scam, but doesn't help in the case where you need to fill up the rental car prior to dropping it at the airport.

It's a shame you have to assume that every Pemex worker is a thief and treat them as such, but that's the way it is right now.  It may be a just a small minority, but given the consistency of the reports of the same scams at multiple stations, there is clearly a culture of thievery at the company.  Pemex is also now starting to accept credit cards, but given all the problems with cash, do you really want to hand them your credit card?

If the previous scams weren't enough, when Profeco tested the pumps, many turned out to pump out less fuel than registered on the pump.   Here is the list of QR stations that got flagged for this.
