LOL Cindy!

MB - how difficult that process must be for your bro and family.  Will they be able to move soon?

Hope you are feeling better soon PJ and that the rest of Irma passes soon, stay safe.
MB - those pictures of your brother's house and the damage are just so sad and depressing. No idea how people cope with stuff like that, I would be tempted to just walk away and sell what is left "as is".
Also congrats on the sale, bet you are relieved.
Weather is a little cooler this week (low to mid 70s) with some wind but next week we might get a Santa Ana, I am probably one of the few Californians who likes them sometimes, they drive others crazy.
Had a Dr. appointment yesterday with the dermatologist, nothing wrong was just a checkup my family Dr. sent me for. Next time she wants to send me to a specialist will ask more questions as to "why"?

Good evening. Got the three brother's BD cards picked up at Hallmark and then I scored a beach bag which described my attitude today. Made several stops early and then back home for a bite and then on to more errands. My biggest mission to open 3 new bank accounts, to safely shelter FDIC the sale proceeds with beneficiary information, was crucial until I decide how to move forward with investing and with whom done.

UHK, kinda worries me for you to make this hike on your own.  One of my defaults....as I worry too much, but please be careful solo.  You mentioned earlier about the water damage vs. wind damage.  A tree fell on their house and broke through 5 trusses, wiped out fireplace and AC unit and allowed rain to enter.  Structurally unsafe. They will insure from roof to 8 feet down and flood will cover ground level to 8 feet up.  If there are any gaps, homeowner's insurance kicks in.  Hopefully, I am articulating reasonably well and accurately.  I don't pretend to understand how this all works, but my brother needs to rip out sheet rock and flooring as contaminated.  Yes, he can have the floor ripped up for 5K but has decided to do himself.  Tree removal, no.

Home Depot respirators finally in stock heck yeah.

Were some other pics I wanted to send, but internet is wonky....Si, Cindy?

Twirls, safe driving and hope you figured out fur friend assistance in your absence.  Have a great time.

PJ, glad the nasty man is gone.  Who needs it?  Just plain yuck.  Glad SC stood up to the piece of poop.  Your raised her well. I don't have time for that nonsense.

Bernie, glad you are still taking it easy.  I know it's been hard to do, but necessary in long run.

Jamie, family down south are walking away from the property.  It will be bull dozed and the beautiful lot will be sold.  My SIL cannot stay and rebuild after what has happened.  PSTD.

Bosco, looking forward to more updates when you guys return home.  Sending best wishes your way.

Cindy, quit working so hard girl.  Take my advice on new beach bag.  "QUEEN of making it up as I go along."

Crunchie, I give them kudos for managing as well as they are.  They are leaning on each other and faith.

Hello to all that I have missed.  Funny that the August weather has returned this week.  Actually feeling quite tropical.

Praying for worldwide peace and healing for all. MB

Evening all
In KC. Left late, naturally.  No problems so far.  At my favorite motel.  Picking up my travel buddy in the morning and heading north.  There is a great restaurant in Des Moines but we will probably travel beyond Des Moines.  Lovely weather.

MB, your poor brother and wife with all that work ahead!  The bad and good news is its like starting over.

Better get to bed.

Frank, after all of the years I have been doing this, nothing homeowners or renters do surprises me anymore. It's amazing that the furnace is still operating well with no cold air returning. Have you tried using a heat gun to soften that caulk before you try to remove it?

Good idea on the heat gun Badger, thanks.  They even caulked or glued the plug that is inside the bathroom fan.  Guess they thought it might come out

Good Morning
MB, love the beach bag. My heart goes out to your brother and his family. So much loss.

Frank, that is one unholy mess. Good Luck cleaning it all up.

I am in a superior position in our home right now. Well, make that MORE superior than usual. Yesterday evening when I was just about to start supper, the phone rang. Chris forgot that he had caught the bus in a different spot than he usually does. I had to go pick him up and drive him to his car. I was tired anyway, so we went to the local pub for dinner and had some tasty ribs. Wonder how long I can milk this?

Today is some laundry, then some grocery shopping, and then the mowing. And if I am not entirely wrung out, I am gonna try and give myself a pedicure this evening. We are back to sandal weather, and my toes are looking pretty shabby.
Have a great day
Cindy

Actually, no, I was referencing your height, but it is very interesting that that's where you went with it.

Good Morning Wonks, it's Thirstday.

Frank, I am all about energy efficiency and savings when it comes to home building/remodeling, but caulking an electric outlet is a new one. Yikes!

MB, sorry about all of that damage, but the former logger in me saw that oak tree and started drooling over all of the valuable lumber I could get out of it.

Twirls, safe travels, looking forward to seeing you, Paul, and C&C tomorrow.

Wow MB, that is a big ole free that took it on the chin. Interesting how insurance works. Way up here, where I live well out of flood areas and always choose high ground, I have had every insurance person ask me specifically about flood insurance, always explaining that this covers flooding water that goes over the top of my foundation walls.  In other words, they will not insure against a high water table for water that comes up thru the basement floor. And they also explained that while they'll repair rain water damage, they require me as a homeowner to repair the roof in a timely manner. It's not a blank check book I am signing up for with insurance.

Looks like I may have one person coming along on the hike with me. May.... People are famous for saying they want to, but when it comes right down to it, there is always a "valid reason" for bailing, and the reasons crop up more, the closer you get to the time of departure. It's really like, if you are gonna do it, you gotta do it. Or stay at home and sit in a recliner. Anyone here think I'm the kind to relish my recliner? Yeah, I often go solo, without a cell phone (Cause I don't even own one), and I live a fairly awesome life!

Lovin life,
Bob

No recliner for Bob.  However, I wish you would get a cheap flip phone or trac phone if you go it alone.  You only pay for however many minutes with the trac phone and buy them as you go.  No contracts.  I provide one for my sister if you need any info.

All this caulk talk is tickling my funny bone and I am reminding myself not to make any of the myriad of inappropriate jokes that are popping into my brain.   Go for it Bernie!

Nice beach bag MB.  Love the sentiments.

Have a great reunion Twirley and C&C and Badger and Babs.  Are you all meeting up somewhere?

Wow Jamie.  You have been having chilly weather.  We have been having high 80's, but the mid to high 90's are coming back now so i may get another pool weekend in.

Actually, I'll admit it.... Laurie has a trak fone for me to use. I'll have to spend 10 or 15 dollars for an hours worth of minutes on it (That expire after a few months, waste of $$$ IMO). She'll need to know when to pick me up at the other end. Just curious, how many of you think the cell companies have cell coverage out there in the wilderness with maybe 1000 customers over hundreds of square miles????? That's not the money maker a cell tower in Boston is. We are setting a prearranged pickup time and place as a default. I may have to hike into town just to get cell signal if anything changes. Out there, you just do the best you can or stay home.

An interesting tool available is the inreach by Delorme, now Garmin (Recent acquisition).
https://explore.garmin.com/en-US/inreach/

This tool uses satellites so cell towers are not an issue. A friend, who may accompany me, has one. You can set this up to send 15 minute updates to a GPS program on a PC back home for someone to monitor, as well as send text messages at the 15 minute interval. Every 15 minutes gives you days of use off the battery, and you shut it off at night anyways. They cost $400.00 and then you have to buy a service plan to use it. It is handy if you need someone to plan to pick you up, Johnny on the spot. If I get back into doing more of this, I just may get out the big crowbar and open my wallet. For now, I'm using the old tech' tried and true, meet at a prearranged point at a pre arranged time. Really, I'm not really alone out there. At any given time, you pass other hikers, the Whites are a fairly popular area.

I've had my eye on one of these babies for a while, but I want to ensure I'll actually use this expensive little toy. Sad part about it, is that you still need a GPS besides this, despite it sending gps updates back to home. I want this unit to be improved so that I can use it as a GPS as well. And let's not forget, I want to be able to send a low res pic of the lunkers I catch while fishing. By the time they add all that, it'll cost $800.00..... LOL!

Lovin life,
Bob

Howdy and good morning all.

Today is supposed to be mostly sunny; the weather lady said on the TV, "some passing thunderstorms".
Unfortunately, she didn't say when or what they would be passing ??  Current temp is 75F at 7:30 with a high today of 84 degrees.

Yesterday's dentist was uneventful. Just a cleaning and it's all good.  Afterwards I had planned to hit the grocery story to catch the sales but I left my list back home. Oh well. I did get the potted plants out of the garage to their temporary spot on the front porch.  I'll let them sit there until I see what hurricane Jose decides to do, then Devin will carry them around to the back porches.

Today I'll get that grocery list done and I have decided to get back into some short walks around the neighborhood. I wanted to hit the beach but need to take it a little easy and stay close to home. Ruh roh !
Today is trash day.  Be right back.

OK. That's about it for today. It's only been 3 weeks since my surgery but I am getting antsy. I know. I'm supposed to be taking it easy.

Good plan on your funds, MB. Keep it safe until you decide what to do.  I am surprised that your brother and his wife are going to rebuild that home, as opposed to taking the insurance money and finding another place to live. Of course, I don't know their financial position on their home.  I just can't see rebuilding on a location that is subject to flood again in the future.  I am sorry that they have to go through all the suffering and do wish them the best of luck.

Safe travels to the Badger & Babs plus Holly & friend.  Enjoy the trip to C&C's place.

Frank, that fan looks like it needs a new fan !

Uphill, good advice from Crunch on the cheap 'go phone' type of communication, assuming you need it for an emergency situation.  Perhaps you can take your GF's phone along just to see if you can get a signal ?

Crunch, you are just 'egging' me to start something on the BC, si ?  You little instigator. I'm going to be berry berry nice today.

Holly, with your luck theses days, perhaps you should have someone do a "safety check on him" ? hee, hee.

I'm done with the caffeine.  See y'all later.
Bernie

Good morning BCers!
Seeing pockets of blue sky... maybe sun will shine today.  Goodbye Irma!
Didn't make it out to do the shopping yesterday.  Put it off again.
I don't have the energy to do it by myself.  Hoping SC will help today.

Good morning.  67 and sunny.  Will probably hit 90 today.  Moving slow enjoying the caffeine.  I'm going to chuck the hanging flower pots on deck.  Looking pretty ridiculous with no flowers or leaves.  I will cut the ties and take the chains down.  Getting a lot of smoke from the wild fires, but is making for some sensational sunrises/sunsets.

Other than that, today's agenda includes printing off numerous documents/receipts from closing, get them organized and things back into the safe. Also, need to get the BD cards mailed.

Badger, get that steel roof done and get ready to party.

Frank, that former tenant really has a very odd fetish.  I'm thinking you have probably said some naughty words trying to clean up that darn stuff.

Safe travels Twirls.  The cap suits you.  Enjoy.

Hi Bernie, just for the record....brother is not rebuilding house in Dickinson.  Phil, Holly and Connie are moving back to MN as soon as everything is settled down south.  Phil will find temporary housing in MN and drive up first with the cats and doggie, Penny.  Holly will stay with her Mother, who provided her 60-day notice on apartment, and they will come later with their other dog Cassie.  Lots of moving parts.

Cindy, you have been in overdrive lately.  Glad you enjoyed the ribs at the pub.  Milk it for all its worth.

PJ, hope you get some help today with the grocery items.  Hope you feel up to par very soon. Hugs.

UHK, for sure no recliner for you.  I'm relieved that you will have some sort of communication on hand.

SoSo, are you near the fires?

Hola Nipper, MapleSyrup and the rest of the BC.  Make it a great day.  I must get something done.  MB

Evening all
Finally settled in a motel in Cedar Rapids.  We had a late lunch/early dinner in Des Moines.  Not the 5 star Django restaurant I wanted to go to but it was too early for "fine dining" so we stopped at a place called The Machine Shed.  Pretty good home style cooking .  I had fried chicken but I hate to brag, it wasn't as good as mine.  At least the mashed potatoes and gravy were great.

Probably spend a little time in Dubuque as I hear that it has some nice architecture.  Then on to our destination, but I'm not exactly sure of where it is.  I'll have to do NAVIGATION and hope it's correct.  We were on a wild goose chase hunting the motel but mostly due to operator error.  I thought I was looking for hiway 17 and it was EXIT 17!  We went past it about 3 times!  Reminds me of a Mexico retourno story!

Cindy, I meant PLEASE DON'T OVERDO.  LOL. .  I had posted PLEASE DO...
Based upon our location, you probably know approximately the time we should arrive.  Please contact me if you want us to stop for anything that you might need.
And DON'T eat any more BBQ!  I have 3 different slabs of ribs and Zardari beans, as requested by Badger.  Not sure of his plans for all of it.
ANY homemade Cindy food will be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Today's schedule, same as yesterday! Kayak, fish, eat out!!!

Yesterday, we went to Kezar lake and I thought everyone was going counterclockwise around the lake, and I saw a fishing spot, so I went left, figuring they would round out to me. But they went straight out and back.... So we never met up. The fish were literally jumping and I was catching em!!! Next thing I know, it's 3 hours later and no one else has come by. So I go clockwise around the lake, nothing. Then I head back down the inlet to the dock, and 5 of them of coming out looking for me.... Apologies from me ensued. Followed that up at a local restaurant for a prime rib special.

Today, it is down a river, and we'll all be drifting together, sort of, unless I find a good fishing hole.... Then we'll have a potluck at the ski resort with the ski club. Other activities this weekend are the ski club annual meeting, which will be followed up with a ride up the ski lift for some easy hiking!

Lovin life,
Bob
