Crunch, I pretty much go with enough clothing for any weather. I start packing with full gore tex: boots, pants, jacket and hat. Then I pack warm clothing, fleece shirt and long john pants. I wear long pants that zip off to shorts, a long sleeve shirt, extra T-shirt, unmentionable and socks. I've hiked in winter and summer with this, no issues. Yes, the whites have some crazy weather, and we are scheduled to get the remnants of a hurricane about the 20th. I plan to leave the 24th. It will be weather dependent. Most important piece of gear is the ready and willing ability to turn back.

Oh yes, that reminds me, I gotta order my new tent. I'll got from 6 lbs to 2 lbs. It'll be using my trekking poles for tent poles, which I hang on a tree branch for the night anyways. 4 lbs. is huge off your back.

Yes, I am bring my camera! I expect lots of great pictures. And bringing a GPS unit, map and compass (because batteries die!)

Lovin life,
Bob

Good Morning
Have been awake since way too early. Was having weird panic dreams about forgetting things. Silly aspect was most were about events that have already taken place.

Cindy--I have those weird panic dreams also and like you they are about events in the past.  The one I seem to get the most is about a test in college.  I missed it, forgot to study, didn't know any of the answers, etc.  Very Weird

Oriana is doing amazingly well tonight. She's been unhooked from all tubes and monitors and has been rolling around in her bed in ICU already...smiling! And she has an incision all the way acrossed her lower abdomen! Mom and Dad are still with her in Burlington, and we've come home with Kaia, so she can go to school, and we can go to work, tomorrow.

Maple--Great news about Oriana.  She is one gorgeous little girl.  Better get your game planned out as the boys are going to be knocking sooner than you think!

Cindy--How many peeps at the reunion?  Looks like you had a great turnout and a good time.  Nice place you had it at.

MB--Haven't started looking for a tenant yet.  Darlene, the renter who passed, was there 12 years and smoked.  Lot of painting to do.  I think a previous tenant was into energy efficiency as there is caulk everywhere you can think of.  All the outlets, around the toilet, windows, doors, lights, EVERYWHERE.  Well her smoking over time stuck to the caulk and turned everything brown.  Thank the Lord my brother is a professional painter and has dealt with the situation before.  He just doesn't know how many coats of paint it will take.  Plus it has that popcorn ceiling.  He painted a portion of the ceiling today and it is like night and day.  Saving grace is we bought the place with nothing down about 20 years ago, the renters paid it off for us in 10so its mailbox money every month.  Over 20 years only had to replace the water heater twice, fridge twice and 3 windows.  Been a nice little money maker.

Had a nice surprise in the mail today.  Missouri has a "show me the money" program where unclaimed funds are sent by companies to balance their books.  I think it is actually a law that they report/send the funds.  Missouri publishes the list and there is a website you can check.  My mom saw my name so I looked up the website and filed the necessary paperwork. Check was for $3,234.34!  Apparently an old real estate deal that I didn't think I was going to get paid on but did. The memo on the check just said it was from a title company.  On the website it said it was over $50.  Sure wasn't expecting what I got! Made my day!

Good Morning
Frank, as it turned out, I DID forget something fairly important. Mollie Collie is quite a princess, and doesn't like the jangle of her tags hitting her stainless steel bowl. So I keep her collar fairly loose and slip it off at mealtimes. Sunday I forgot to put it back on. Had to stop at a Target store on the way to Illinois and buy a collar and leash, as dogs must be leashed at the forest preserve. Was happy no one checked, as she had no tags on. Nice surprise you got in the mail!

Sorry no food porn, Holly. By the time everything was uncovered for serving, the line was elbow to elbow. When there was room, nothing looked very picture worthy.  But it was all tasty. And Frank, re: how many, don't have an answer, but it wasn't the biggest turnout we've had. My grandfather had 10 brothers and 3 sisters. It is supposed to be all the descendants, but lately now it has been mostly just been 2 lines of the family; my Grandpa Charlie and his brother Jens, both farming families so we stayed closer to home and knew each other better. Sad that it is all beginning to crumble, we've been having this picnic reunion for 75+ years.

Busy day yesterday; I was tuckered out by the end of the day. Will be homebound today, as vehicle is going in for maintenance. Plenty to do around here though, getting ready for the weekend visitors!

Have a wonderful day
Cindy

Good Morning Cougars, it's Twosday.

MB, you funny, when is your next trip?

Nice score Frank....party at Frank's place!

Looks like lots of tall Johnsens...how come Cindy is so short?
And, yes, where is the food porn?

So glad you and family are safe Bosco, trip North sounds like a nightmare. BTW, if you have significant damage to your home I wouldn't mind some winter work in Florida.

Twirls, in Wisconsin we have what is called a Builders Lien, thankfully I've only had to use one once. What happens is first I send notice (by registered mail) of my intent to file a lien on the property, if no response, then I go thru the process of filing the lien. All it took was the first notice and I was then paid promptly.

Looking forward to more house pix Soso!

Bernie, now you have to keep an eye out for Jose.

80s and sunny here today.

Nice weather for you Badger.

What a great surprise Frank!

Oriana and her sister are sure cute.

SC and her BF are very brave LOL!  Hope those winds don't cause you any trouble PJ.

Sounds like you know what you are doing Bob.  Enjoy.

C&C - I guess it is inevitable.  My MIL used to go to all these navy family reunions, but slowly everyone died off.  Surviving into your 90's has its issues for sure when you end up losing so many old friends.

Howdy and good morning to all.

Cloudy again this AM. Thanks goodness the wind will be a little less today and the trees look calm right now.
I didn't sleep that well last night as the wind and rain was pretty active. Today we be just a little more light rain, as the final bands of Irma push through. Then we might see some sun peeking through the clouds. I see on the radar that Tenn. is still getting pounded.  You tired of all that yet, PJ ?  Current temp 75F at 8:20 with a high of 85 degrees.

Yesterday a 'blah' day. I had a follow up doctor's appointment and stopped by for lunch afterwards at a different place than my normal 'greasy spoon'. One of the waitstaff gals is a cute little thing and she was flirting with me a bit so I returned the favor. No, she wasn't just 'working me for a tip', as she was not taking care of my table. The lunch crowd was mostly over and she came by to chat with me a little. I decided to ask her if she had a boyfriend and would she like to catch a bite for dinner sometime ? ( restaurant closes at 2:00 Monday through Sat ). "No boyfriend and yes, she would enjoy that". I gave her my phone # on the way out and suggested we chat.  She seems very nice and is closer to my age, maybe a little older. Will see how it goes, as I have never dated an 'older woman'. Hope she's not a cougar ! hee, hee.

Not much on the agenda today. I got a check in the mail from my local cable company, which is a co-op that pays yearly dividends ( Atlantic Telephone Membership Corporation ). It wasn't anywhere near what Frank got but the capital credit of $54.30 was a nice little surprise.  I need to make a stop at the bank anyway so I'll deposit my little bonus. That's about it for me.

Uphill, that's a pretty aggressive hike you have planned. Question : will you carry a sidearm ?  That would be a normal piece of gear if your trip was in most remote areas of the Rockies.

Nice score on the check, Frank. How about a Mexico vacation this Winter ?  I recall you had said in the past that it's been a while. You probably deserve one.

Badger, I have followed the track of hurricane Jose a little. It looks like it can't make up it's mind. Guess I'll leave all my loose stuff in the garage for now, except for the potted plants. I can access them easily with my hand truck and place them along the front sidewalk by the front porch. No direct lifting required. Enjoy your trip and time spent with Holly and Chris/Cindy.

Bosco, please let us know when you guys head back home and how it all looks when you get there.

  Time to get moving.
See y'all later,
Bernie

Good morning BCers,
Irma is here...lost much of her punch due to a cold front.

Frank,  Yah!  Nice score!  Eagle eye mom took care of you.

Bernie,  Good idea to just keep everything in garage until hurricane Jose
decides his course.  Nice score for you as well.  Just about enough money to
take that nice waitress on a date.

C&C,  One of my grandfathers was 6'5" that gene is strong in our family.
The niece that is here from FL is 6' tall.

As soon as electricity is back on in Coral Gables my niece is going back to FL.
Which is a good thing!
OMG... The significant other of the BF niece brought with is PITA.
Real MCP... He and SC had go around last night.  He did not win! (She is her mother's daughter)
Everyone laughed at him.  He went downstairs and pouted because a woman talked back to him
in the same condescending tones he was using.
Heard him screaming at his lady ...using the most fowl degrading language on Sunday morning.
Would not be with a man who talked to me like that!
Since I have been sick... have not had the opportunity to socialize across the street.  Maybe that as a good thing!
Twins come and go between the houses.  Oldest great nephew (21 yrs old) is sleeping in our guest room.
He is very polite young man.  Enjoy talking with him.

Morning everyone and not a good one here.
Let's just say I was caught by surprise coming down the hall when I sneezed !  It was not pretty!
Naturally I got up late after not thinking I slept well.  Apparently I slept better than I thought because I slept through the tile guy texting, calling and knocking on the door!
Hope the rest of this day goes better.  Like Cindy, I got lots to do.

Cindy, don't overdo.

Frank, nice surprise!  Much better than mine! LOL

It RA meds day and I hope I feel great tomorrow and through the weekend.

Taking a short break. Twirls, your room is just about ready. Summer is back, for the daytimes, at least. Please bring a jacket and other warmer clothes for the evenings, though. You would swim in any of my jackets. Hope your RA meds have you feeling great, too!

PJ, my Gramps was fairly tall for his generation, 6'2". His brother Jens was closer to 6'4" and he married a fairly tall woman. Jens' son Jay also married a tallish woman, so Rod and his brothers are all over 6'6". My gramps, however, married my petite 4'6" Grandma Helen. Of my 2 older sisters, I was the tallest at 5'5". (have shrunk an inch now). On Chris' side, his mother carried the tall gene; she was 6'2", as is Chris' sister Clara. When my sons stopped growing, one at 6'2" and the other at 6', both grumbled to me that it was my fault they weren't taller. I told them it was their great grandma's fault. Of course, she was gone by then, so they couldn't grumble to her. Funny thing is, son #2, who is a big man, got her nose...a tiny little turned up nose. He can't keep his glasses up. I think Deedee has got the same nose, much better on a little girl.

Bernie, good thinking re: keeping stuff stored a bit longer! And also what PJ said.

Back to work.

Bernie, no weapons or even bear spray. (Watch out for those cougars though, I hear they are abundant in your area!!) I have only seen one bear outside a cage in my life, it was taking down my birdfeeder. I'll be bear lining my food bag at night. I'm not saying it can't happen, but it is so exceedingly rare in these parts, despite all the worldwide reports made available on the internet. It's kinda like you owning a snowblower similar to mine.

Bear lining a bag: Find a branch 15 feet up that won't support a bear, nor is there a branch nearby that will. Throw your bear line over the line, at least 5' from the tree trunk, out of the reach of bears and pull the food bag most of the way up, tying it to a tree at ground level. Thus far bears haven't figured out how to untie the parachute cord.

I was concerned if I was tackling too much, so I checked my records of previous hikes. (You earn a patch if you summit all 48 of the 4000 foot peaks in NH, but you have to document it. I'm at #34 right now). It is not uncommon for me to do 12 miles in a day, or 3 to 4 thousand feet elevation gain. All of the 4k's have over 2000 feet of elevation gain, so I'm making it as easy on these old knees as I can. I'm cutting it back pretty good for this hike. Looking to "commune with nature" as it were.

Typically, my full pack weighs in at 40 lbs. I'm looking to keep it under 35 lbs this trip. I bought a new lighter tent and bed pad. Dehydrated food and a water filter make quite a difference. I do carry 2 liters of water to start out, and refill at streams, preferably, but will take a pond or lake.

Best of luck with your new lady friend!

Lovin life,
Bob

Good evening.  Another top 10 weather day here.  Lots of follow-ups to make sure that I have all the appropriate documents from closing for US income tax reporting.  More back and forth with agent.  Cash hit my account today so I can finally breathe.  Need to go to bank in morning to open up more accounts for FDIC insurance protection until I decide how to invest the funds.  Lo Siento Frank and Bernie, but my check was much bigger than yours.

Twirls, thinking of ya.  Safe travels.

Badger, watch out for those cougars for sure.

PJ, it is difficult when folks are out of their routine for sure.  Hope things are drying out for you now.

Hi Bernie.  Hope the new date works out for ya.

Cindy, you are working way tooo hard for guest arrival.  I will need pics for sure of the festivities and your beautiful grounds. Hugs.

Frank, glad you are moving forward with painting and such to freshen up the place for a new tenant.

UPK, you are an adventurous man.  Please be safe and looking forward to pics.  Will you be solo or is GF joining you?

I'm still sending prayers for all in need.  Be well all and God bless, MB

It has been an actual nightmare. There is just so much stinking caulk.  I don't think Darlene, my tenant who passed, would have done it.  When we bought the place there was a tenant already renting.  He stayed about 4 years.  I think he was the culprit. It is a small unit, 888 sq.ft.  Badger you'll get a kick out of this. We discovered today that he had closed off the only cold air return in the unit.  I took the grate off to clean it and there was the cardboard, all caulked in making the cold air return useless.  Surprised the furnace didn't blow up.  He even caulked around the brackets that hold the curtain rods.  Why would you do that?  We didn't notice all the caulk when we bought it as it was white and blended into everything.  Well over the 12 years Darlene rented from us the caulk attracted her cigarette smoke and turned brown.  What a mess.  What is weird is the place doesn't reek of smoke and the carpet is in great shape.  The lady we bought it from had just put in a ultra premium carpet.  The unit next door had a fire and the firemen had to go thru her master bedroom wall to get the blaze out.  She then took the insurance company for a ride.  We are going to clean it and see what happens.  If it doesn't rent we will buy some new carpet and move on.

Good Morning Short Johnsens, it's Hump Day.

Frank, after all of the years I have been doing this, nothing homeowners or renters do surprises me anymore. It's amazing that the furnace is still operating well with no cold air returning. Have you tried using a heat gun to soften that caulk before you try to remove it?

Glad you came out well on that sale MB...BEEG party at MB's house!

Bernie, new friend sounds interesting, as long as you already like cats, having a cougar around could be fun.

PJ, how are you feeling?

I'm installing a steel roof this week, hope to finish it today because there is a chance of rain tomorrow.

MB, at this point in time, I have no takers for the hike, looking like it will be a solo hike. That's okay with me, done it many times before. I have a few who have spoken some interest, but nothing solid. The thing is, this is a 4 day hike and weekends are only 2 days, and I'm starting this on a Monday during the school year. Campsites should be readily available, especially considering it will be September 24th! Nice cool weather so I'm not sweating to death, no skeeters, etc....

How about one story from managing apartments. Had this one tenant, who needed a week to come up with the rest of the security deposit. The boss was fairly easy going and gave her that week. The week goes by, nothing. He sends me over to collect, no answer at the door. But I notice she has found the money to change the locks, and has painted over every window in the place with white spray paint. I report it to the boss, he makes a call and sends me back over the next day. Windows have been scraped and she hands me a check. Yeah, this one was trouble for the short time she was there....

Lovin life,
Bob

Good Morning
Laptop is acting very wonky this morning. We'll see how this goes.

Have a list of things to accomplish today, so will keep this short.

Badger, if "short Johnsens" was intended innuendo, on that you can rest assured that particular item of male anatomy was not lacking in any of my relatives (my SILs are all very happy women). And from the gaggle of little ones at the picnic, it is obvious we are a fertile bunch. So there. And why is it that there are SO many euphemisms for that part of a man? (I think it is just because they are rather silly looking)

PJ, you sound like you're feeling better. Takes a while to get that energy level back up to par, though.

Hi to all and have a wonderful day
Cindy

Howdy and good morning everyone.

Wonderful bright sunny skies this morning. I'm a liking that !  Current temp is 68F & high will be 83 degrees.

Yesterday was another 'take it easy' day with a lunch visit to Fibber Magee's and the bank to deposit my giant $54.30 refund check. Quit bragging MB ! hee, hee.

Today I plan to move my potted plants from the garage with the help of a dolly to the front sidewalk. That way I can get back into the garage should hurricane Jose decide to make a visit. Even though I'm feeling stronger each day, I will take it slow and easy by just 'scooting' the pots onto the lift truck. No lifting.  I have a dentist cleaning at 1 o'clock today.

Crunch, so ya got a good snicker from my cougar comment, huh ?  I just knew most of the BC would get a laugh out of it.

Badger, will see how it goes and let you know; not all cats are desirable companions,si?

I expected BB to chime in, as she just loves to hear about my dating stories.

MB, your response was very subdued. You must be tried from your trip.

And Cindy, I gave you a great 'set-up'. The family reunion must have worn you out as well.

Uphill, you sound absolutely stoked about your big hike and camping trip.  Let us know when you actually leave and don't forget the camera !

Oh, Badger, look what you have started on the Johnsens !

I'm outta here before it gets any worse.
See y'all later,
Bernie

Good morning.  64 and sunny with a high of 87.  The irrigation system is running.  I forgot to set it last evening before I went to bed.  I've been in close contact with family down south.  Holly went back to work for the first time in several weeks.  She told me she needs to focus on something else rather than the loss of home.  Phil continues to tear down walls and rip up wood flooring.  All the stuff hauled out curbside thus far is still sitting there with the exception of stoves and refrigerators that were hauled away. Yesterday they met with wind coverage insurance agent and adjuster.  Dealing with wind insurance, flood insurance and homeowners coverage all at once and then throw in FEMA.  The adjuster has been a tremendous asset in navigating them through this process.

Newspaper article featuring my Father.

Thanks to Animal Alliance for saving Cassie, she was attacked in the shelter.

Three rooms clear, now three more tomorrow.

One of our favorites lost, from a Galveston mansion.

Progress being made.

I best get on with the day and tackle my to do list.  Later, MB

Oh my..... MB, do you have more pictures of the neighborhood? It appears most of the damage is water, not wind????

Lovin life,

Morning all

Cindy, please do over do.  We won't be inspecting anything.  I won't look in corners or under beds!  I overlook clutter.  Clutter lives in my house.  At least you aren't under destruction or construction so it will be a treat.
I checked your forecast and will be prepared...probably bring too much.  I'm always cold.  I'll be missing the last 90° pool days here.  Boo hoo.  They say it will cool down after the weekend.

My fried chicken dinner was great but I was exhausted.  The guests cleaned up, thankfully.

Feeling much perkier today.  Looks like a good travel day!

Good morning BCers!
Irma is still here... woods are getting a good slow soaking.
Badger.  Yep!  Feeling better.  I think as soon as the meds for kidney infection are finished
it will be all good.  One may cause dizziness and the other nausea.  There is no "may" to it.  They do.

The obnoxious man across the street took his daughter and left yesterday.  Went back to Florida.
Thankfully his home is fine ...just no electric.   My brother and SIL were much relieved to see him go.
SC held spanish lessons for the remaining 3 children on the covered front porch all afternoon.
I could hear the laughter at my house. They really seemed to be enjoying themselves.

MB,  So happy the money is in the bank.  No real estate deal is really finished until that happens.
Those pics of your brother and SIL's home just break my heart.  Everything to the curb...so sad.
Must be so hard to just keep putting one foot in front of the other...

Bernie,  Be careful moving those pots.

Twirls,  Wishing you smooth and safe travels.

Need to go and do the much dreaded grocery shopping.  The cabinets are getting bare.
Nearly out of laundry soap.  Can't do without that.   SC has gone off to Jackson for job fair and tax class tonight.
So no help from her.   Maybe I can get the twins to lug it all in the house for me.  Hope so!
Have a great day all...

Taking a short break. Just want to point out for everybody snickering about short Johnsens, the euphemism is Johnson. Johnsen is pretty much a made up name. My great grandfather's name was actually Soren Sorensen. (insert heavy accent) The story handed down is that he was the last one off the boat at Ellis Island at the end of the day. When he finally reached the clerk, he was asked his name. He said Soren Sorensen, and the guy wrote down Frank Johnson. Being a proud Dane, he drew a line through the O in son and made it Sen to make it look more Danish. And since he sired 14 children, it's a fair bet that if you meet any Johnsens, they are probably related to me because Johnsen isn't a Danish name...it would be Jensen. The Swedes and Norwegians used son.
Even spell check agrees. Every time I type Johnsens I get a red line.
