Paying for Car rental with cash

I've read some posts about doing this but wonder how this works. Since you have to make payment when you pick up the car, what kind of receipt do you get? I'm renting from American car rental in Playa del Carmen. Thanks

They will require a credit card to swipe when you rent the car but will not submit the charge at that point. Just tell the agent that you will settle the bill in cash when you return the car.
If you do pay in cash be sure to get back and keep all the paperwork as well as a nota that you did pay the final bill in cash. Then check CC activity on line just in case.

Yes, you will still need a credit card for them to swipe. DON'T FORGET TO GET TO GET THAT COPY BACK AND TEAR IT UP! If you don't they will charge your credit card and it is a headache to get resolved. If you have that kind of cash on hand to pay it off then you will save the conversion fee and difference in the exchange rate.

We always get a walmart money card Visa. We load it with 500 bucks. Works just like a credit card and we use that for car rental and other stuff. No link to your accounts.

And if you get it a couple weeks before the trip you can get a PIN and all and use it just like a credit/debit card at ATM's and stuff.

I like the Walmart Visa card idea. I like your margarita on the beach idea even better!

Not like the others. (smile - I believe they Do not rent )

I have paid in US$ for my car rentals the last few years (or in pesos) - I prefer my Caribbean company

This is only loosely on topic but I recommend these two super critical steps when renting a car in Mexico:
1. Take a high quality picture of each piece of the car with your digital camera
2. Put your digital camera in video mode and walk around the car videoing it

Every time I have rented a car this has saved me when they blame a ding or a scratch as something I did. Must be an extortion thing they do for some extra money.

I believe this must be the same company we are renting from in February also. Caribbean Rent a Car, right? I see they will meet us at the airport and take us the facility. Do you remember how far that is from the airport? Also, have you always gotten the car type you reserved with them? I think we reserved an Attitude automatic. I also see they require a deposit. Have you ever had them actually take that up front? Last time we rented with someone they did not.

HI everyone...I like the idea about buying a Walmart card to use for the rental car guys. I have a question though...will they put a hold for a certain amount on that gift card while we use the rental? In other words, If we get a $500 visa walmart card...then rent a car...will they hold 2-3 hundred of those dollars hostage until we return the car? Just wondering...

Thanks.

Depends on the agency. Whatever they do with a normal credit card they will do. The one we use on Cozumel doesn't, but they all set their own policy.

We will be picking a car up Monday morning from Cancun Car Rental (American). Their uniformed representative will be to the Left of the exit from the terminal. He will show us to their van. The drive to the agency is 5 to 10 minutes from the airport.
Have your reservation paperwork with you. My quote is in USD so I will have exactly that amount in USD cash (less 5% if you can prove a Loco Gringo reservation). If your reservation is in USD and you pay by credit card they will convert the dollars to pesos with a absurd rate.

They will take an imprint of my CC and have me sign it. They will make a copy of my license. The car they give me will be what I reserved or better.
We will look over the car and note every scratch dent and mark. I love the picture of each side on my phone.
We will make sure there is a working jack and spare tire in the car. After loading our stuff I will check to make sure all is working with the car running, radio, air conditioning etc. I will also note the gas gauge as it is probably low. If necessary you can get gas just south of the exit to the airport. (See other posts for hints to buying gas in Mexico).

Hope this helps
This will make at least my 8th rental.

A few ?. Rented from them 3 times last year

America/Caribbean office is on 307 , a few minutes north  from the airport exit/entrance

I paid in US$. But they had a sign with peso payment at 13.2 to 1 last month

They took a credit card imprint but never put any hold on my credit card

I took ALL the insurance and 0 deductible including an addition tire/glass fee - I still pay on average $35 a day

Type of vehicle - I take the cheapest and what's available  - therefore never disappointed - HINT b Be flexible

I like pcm2a's picture and video routine. They also see you doing this so are less likely to pull anything on you![sm=y-cool.png]

We rented from American in Playa for just 2 days and got all insurance including tires and glass, an extra $5/day. They did a credit card imprint and we paid cash in dollars at the time of the rental. The rental agreement we got showed $0 due, reflecting the full payment. If you have a quote in $ and they have a "good" exchange rate in pesos it's not to your benefit--you would pay fewer pesos with a "bad" exchange rate. The credit card was not actually run and we got all copies of the charge slip back when we turned the car in. There have been no charges to that card. We did take pictures when we got the car and had no problems at turn in.

However, we did have a problem with our car--a broken belt. My husband had to argue with the agent in Cancun to get someone to replace our car. They did give in and got us a new one pretty quickly.

I am apprehensive about signing a blank CC slip. Someone on TA mention paying cashing and making sure that the card you give them is not active in Mexico so you don't have a blank CC slip someone could write on later.

I've rented approximately 20 times down there and have never had a problem with a credit card, however, I did have an employee steal $100 from me at one of the popular companies when trying to pay with cash. They always give you back the signed credit card slip when you turn the car in, it's just a deposit in case you don't come back. Credit card companies are also very good about dealing with fraud, they have to be or nobody would use credit cards. If I were you I would just use your card and enjoy your trip, don't pay attention to the paranoid people in your life, they will ruin your fun.

I now never take more than $200 US down there with me and usually bring all of it back minus a little I use for tips. I just use my credit card in the ATMs to withdraw pesos when I get there.
