Akumal Beach Resort?

Hello, all! It has been several years since I've visited this forum or the Loco Gringo website and things have changed a bit. We have stayed several times at ABR, the last was in 2009. I didn't think we would have a chance to return, but I am currently going through chemotherapy for breast cancer [&o], and my husband decided a trip back to QR would give me something to look forward to during this difficult time. We love to snorkel and we loved the informal atmosphere at ABR, but some of the things I've been reading here about it don't sound very positive. We will be traveling 4/29-5/9/14 and I have booked our airfare, but I didn't get a clear answer when I inquired about construction next to the resort, prices, etc. Also, I don't see any other AI resorts listed on the website. Is there any other AI like ABR where you can walk out of your room and snorkel right from the beach? We stayed at a condo in HMB in 2007; the snorkeling there is a bit technical and my husband wants to stay at an AI.
Thanks!

We stayed at both ABR and condos in Akumal in the past, which are clearly the hands down winners in great beach snorkeling. This year, booked the Grand Oasis Tulum because the price was right and based on reports of good beach snorkeling.

Hope all goes well with the chemo.

Hi Dogfan! Best of luck with your chemo. You definitely need something to look forward to and I couldn't think of a better place. Who knows what will be happening at ABR at that time. You need to relax, not stress out and I agree an AI is the way to go. I am a huge fan of Oasis Akumal - or the fancy new section, Grand Oasis Akumal. You might want to read my trip report to see if it would be a good fit. It is only a couple miles south of Akumal and you can snorkel right off the beach. They just remodeled the Grand section last year. The prices are comparable to ABR, the food is very good, small resort so not alot of walking, great staff. You will be treated like a Queen and not have to lift a finger - my kind of vacation. We are going for the third time this year in a couple of weeks so will report back on any updates. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you, NL, I will look into Grand Oasis Akumal. There used to be many AI resorts listed and I would book everything through Loco Gringo. I don't see any now but ABR. Did you book your reservation directly with Grand Oasis? It was very handy doing everything from one website!

There are a few threads on the development of the land between ABR and HAC (a new Secrets resort will be completed by end of 2016)
- see the thread Why did ABR sell

Right now, it is land clearing only. Once they start building, I am assuming it should be quieter

There will be a few others at ABR and surrounding area at that same time - we hope to meet you - see the LG party thread for AASB2014

Other places in Akumal

HAC (Hotel Akumal Caribe) - I find it very crowded at that end and you will likely be closer to the construction

Las Casitas is great (for 4 people though)

Cannon House
has a small unit

Oasis snorkeling has had great reports although the area is more open so if you have any medium/high wind, it will be iffy

Barcelo and Sirenis has great snorkeling as well

Hey Dogfan, No I was unable to book through Locogringo unfortunately, so there are several options - you could go to TripAdvisor and they give you several online booking sites. I have used book it.com and they have good rates. I've been to Sirenis and it is beautiful but it's a 10 minute hike from the rooms to the restaurants and beaches - way too big for us. Also the beach is small and crowded. Barcelo is also another mega resort and I found their rates to be pretty steep. ABR obviously is going through changes but overlooking everything else, the beds are like cement, even with mattress pads and the rooms are very run down. I have not had a problem snorkeling at Oasis - if it is windy there, that would be a good day to take a trip to Akumal Bay which is very sheltered.

Thought LG dropped all AI's except ABR when they started the package deal style.

I will look into Grand Oasis Akumal.

Is that the one that's changed names multiple times over the last 4-7 years? Oasis Tulum & 'Be Live' was the last one? Anyways if it is, they are having extreme safety issues happening since the latest remodel. I'd look elsewhere

Whale - Thank you for the link. When I go to reservations at the top of the screen the only option is ABR and the rates are double what they are elsewhere. The packages available are from 12/12. We would all love to use you guys if it was made easier what our options are. Please keep us updated with how to find what you have to offer. Thanks.

First let me say that I have nothing to do with the booking site or how it works but I know that Kay is always working to improve things. That said, I don't understand how you are getting a price for ABR that is "twice as high as anywhere else". For example, when I look at the ABR page and the special discount (click special right above the rates), the ABR for the middle of November with LocoGringo it comes out at $85 per day. Are you finding it for $42.50 for that same time period? Of course it may be different for different dates but that is an example. What dates are you looking for?

The 12/12 date on those package pages is only because those pages were first posted on 12/12. If you click the link on any property you want to see it should give you current information.

For the most up to date information on the ABR rates fill out an availability or reservation request HERE with your dates and the reservation staff will check it out for you. I believe, but am not sure, that for any other AIs except for the ABR you need to go to the package deal page HERE. Just click the area you want and any resort you want to check should have a link at the bottom of the listing. If it doesn't work please let me know.

Sorry MM, I misstyped the link. Try it again. As far as I know they are still booking AIs through the package deal site, except for ABR. ABR still goes through to old website same as villas, houses and condos

I booked GOT through LG... but then we did want the flight and hotel both, and their price was the best we could find at the time.

Noodle Lady, I enjoyed your trip report; Oasis Akumal is the same as Oasis Tulum? Your report sounds just like the experience we're looking for. You said you had a Garden View room; have you ever stayed in the Ocean view rooms? I think I would be willing to spend the extra $ if they are as nice. Also, we will be going in early May so maybe the weather will be similar. Thank you for your help!

Hi Whale, When I go to Accommodations on the top of the page and look for AI's in Akumal all that comes up is the ABR so based on previous information I assumed you did not represent any others. The rates I found wre $131 per person ($262 per night for 2)- if you keep looking you find there is a special 35% discount which brings the rate down to $171 so it is not double, I stand corrected. Same thing when you go to the top of the page to Destinations - halfway down the page there are options highlighted in blue under AI's only ABR is listed with no indication that others are available elsewhere. Then when I go to the Forum under LocoGringo Vacation Packages I only see 7 resorts listed under Akumal. By now I have given up. Until you posted the link last night I never even noticed the blue link for Hotel & Flight Packages on the upper left hand side of your home page. Boy do I feel stupid. Maybe it would be clearer if the Hotel & Flight packages banner was made larger and instructions that this is where to go for all available options.

Also to answer the other question, this property was originally Oasis Akumal, then changed to Grand Oasis Riviera Maya, then Be Live now (Grand) Oasis Tulum. Same location.

Can anyone tell me if coffee makers and fridges are available for the rooms. I read somewhere they were available for a charge. Any idea how much or the availability?

I know there has been some confusion between the two different menus at the top of the forum pages. And the fact that the ABR is not listed the same way as all the other AIs has also caused a little confusion. But hey, it's just down the beach a ways so if there are issues at ABR one of the LogoGringo staff can just run down there to straighten things out. All the other AIs are a little further away. As I said before, Kay is always trying to improve things so look for this confusion to be fixed in the near future.

For what it's worth. My very first trip to the Riviera Maya was a trip to the Oasis as it was called back then in 2004. I knew the minute we arrived that we had found paradise. Been back to the RM and the Yucatan more than 20 times since then and the next six of those first trips were to ABR.

Thanks for the info. Those prices are about what I thought they'd be. I do have a small coffee maker and a soft-sided cooler. I'll just bring it with me. So much for travelling light this time.
