Hellooooooooo!
My name is Bruce and I live in Omaha, Nebraska. I grew up in Houston and so the beach was a normal part of growing up - well, it was Galveston so it wasn't the best beach but I didn't know any better.
My first trip to Riviera Maya was in February of 2012. The company I work for was celebrating its 10th anniversary by flying employees and their spouses for an A.I. holiday in Playa del Carmen. We all had such a great time that the owner set a HUGE growth goal for a return trip (25% sales growth) We met that goal and so are returning at the end of February 2013!!!!! This time, to Cancun (The Royal).
Without a doubt, my absolute favorite activity is snorkeling. I love the unique sense of solitude and the never-ending items of interest that cruise past my mask. It's very difficult to isolate a single favorite drink because it kinda depends on the situation: Bahama-mama, Blue Lagoon, Coconut mojito, Don Julio shots, oh, and one that I discovered in PDC: Crema de Maguey (I think that's how it's spelled) and can't find in the US. I bought and returned home with three bottles.
Glad to be a part of this community and have a group to share experiences with that can understand my obsession!

Hi Everyone! We'll be staying @ the Riu in Playa again in a few weeks, and I've always wanted to spend the day in Akumal. Is it costly to hop in a cab to get there. I'm really not interested in joining up with a big group. There's be 4-6 of us going and want to snorkel with the turtles and explore. Thanks for your help!!

Hi there! Canadian here! From Campbell River, BC. Favorite drink is anything icy cold! LOL
I’m new to this board but not new to Playa! My husband and a group of people will be there in a few weeks and one of the main thing I want to do is go to Akumal. I’m not interested in taking an expensive tour, I just want to go there for the day and snorkel with the turtles. Can anyone help me by telling me how much a cab would cost from Riu Tequila to Akumal? There will most likely be 4-6 of us. Can you rent snorkel gear on the beach? Also, when is the best time to get there to see turtles? Thank you so much for your help!

Hey there -welcome to LG

A cab will cost $25-30 US to Akumal. But they are small vhicles and you are not likely to squeeze more that 4 people into one vehicle. Or for kicks you can go into Playa del Carmen and catch a colectivo south from the colectivo center to Akumal and walk from the highway to the beach - there is a pedestrian crossover. That's only about 30 pesos one way per person. Its an easy walk to the beaach - About 10 minutes i would guess.
Yes you can rent snorkel gear - I recommend the Akumal Dive Center which is a big round building just south of the Lol Ha restaurant. And you can snorkel directly out from there and see turtles etc. There are turtles in the bay year round and all day long. The bay can be busy with all kinds of snorkel TOURS which you do not need to be on to see turtles. Ignore all the hawkers renting vests and tours and go on your own. Do NOT stop at the kiosk on your right at the big parking lot as you come in. No touching turtles or coral though please - inspite of what you might see others doing.
Have a blast and stop for a cool something at the Lol Ha Beach bar.

Scott and Jennifer from Rock Island IL.  Oasis Tulum 2/6/12 -2/13/12.  First time ever at a resort we are cruise junkies but wanted to try something different.  I am an eclectic drinker but if forced to choose my favorite would be a dirty vodka martini but I also love bloody beers.  JJ likes Miller Lite on ice????? (It keeps her from dancing on the bar.) She also likes 7&7.  Pretty old school yuh?  Will have to get out of our routine in Mexico

Hi, I'm a new member of the forum but the have always trusted the information on the LocoGringo website/forum. I go by escape.reality and I'm from Toronto in Canada. I'm planning my second trip to Akumal for next month! I've also been to Playa once (do the 2 trips to Cancun in my 20's count?) Love to snorkel and swim and jump waves in the ocean. Can't wait to sit on the beach reading a great (as in popular and fun, nothing that's going to be short listed for an award) novel with a Mojito in my hand.

Glub Glub aka Shelly
Minneapolis, MN (actually Blaine)

First trip to Akumal in 1995 while I was 6 months pregnant with first child; 6-7 trips to Akumal since
coming back March 2013

Snorkeling, the beaches (Akumal and Xpu-ha) and the great vibe of HMB/Akumal. We went to Hawaii last year and Puerto Vallarta earlier this year, and the kids voted hands down to go back to Akumal. Love how Akumal has retained his community feel (despite the massive increase in non-Akumal guests that arrive daily to snorkel). The only other location that compares is bare boating in the BVI.

Diet pepsi. The pop tastes different, and there's nothing like a cold diet pepsi on hot day with chicken nachos from the Lol ha.

Happy snorkeling,
Glub Glub from Minneapolis

I'm new here, new to forums in general. However, we are considering Akumal in Feb 2014 and would rather not reinvent the wheel if you all have experience. For instance, do you fly to Cancun and drive to Akumal, or fly into Akumal? Where do you like to stay? Is the diving as good as we've heard?

Finding great advice on here, but still unsure whether to use Pesos or $...

As long as you stay along the coast either one will work but you will get a better exchange rate using pesos. Whatever you do do not mix pesos and dollars in the same transaction, that's just asking for confusion. We prefer to use dollars until we get to our destination and then either exchange some dollars or get pesos from an ATM with a credit card. From that point on we use pesos exclusively for the remainder of our trip.

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

For instance, do you fly to Cancun and drive to Akumal Yes , or fly into Akumal ? No airport anywhere except Cancun or Merida (183 miles West of Cancun) Where do you like to stay? You will get a bunch of answers for this one, lots of places in Akumal. Everybody has their favorite. Is the diving as good as we've heard? YES

Welcome to the forum, you will get lots of answers here.
