If you want to get to Tulum, you should REALLY have to work to get there. I'm definitely NOT on board with a bunch of Cancun junkettes rolling in and crowding up the beaches, like Isla Mujeres.

Time can't be rolled back. Before the fast ferries and the fancy port, Isla Mujeres was a wonderful, sleepy little island with a great little town. A passenger and a car ferry ran hourly (from different locations)... or not, if there weren't enough people. If you missed the ferry or it wasn't leaving, pay a fisherman a few pesos, jump in his panga with your bags and off you went. There were no condos or AI resort on the island. Garrafon had no dolphin prison or much in the way of amenities, and Punta Sur was just natural, no concrete paths and weird sculptures. From town south there wasn't much along Sac Bajo until you were way south. On the other side of the island there was a few houses. I remember sitting on the beach along Sac Bajo one evening when we first saw the pirate cruise from Cancun come over. WTH? And it was going to the restaurant next door to where we used to stay. [:'(]

Cozumel. Playa, Akumal and even Tulum, they've all grown and changed a lot over the last 20 some years since I started coming to Q.Roo. Hasn't scared me off. I still love them all.

With the way development has been going along the coast, I think a high speed train is a great option. I'd much rather see a train then all the cars or another airport. The new expanded highway is better than the old one for the current traffic volume, but even 5 yrs from now it will probably be in need of expansion again. Get people to/from Cancun quickly and efficiently and let then rent a car at their destination, if they want one at all.

I hope if/when the build the rail system, they factor in for future expansion. Eventually I'm sure there will be demand for it to head further south.

Hey, Maggie, wth does "BINK" mean? I see you posting it all over the place and have no idea what you're saying. [8|]

    I thinks she said

    BINK!

The breeze on the terrace must be from all the hot air. Loving it here....and way more traffic then a typical August. People everywhere...all wearing short shorts. LOL It's all good. Good for them. Great idea. Beats all those buses and let's folks ....LOCALS... commute.

Said this last year...307 on the south end is one great highway. Hope it's twenty years before they need three lanes.

Phuckin bee u tee full on Soliman Bay right now. Have yet to make it to Tulum beaches yet. Tomorrow perhaps.

Viva Mexico. See ya Monday BINKIE!

I'm with Doug on this - while it's good for the economy, it's going to make it far too convenient for the day-trippers, and I'm afraid we're about to see some crowded beaches.

However, if that happens - I'll be taking the train to Tulum, renting a car and driving to Xcalak. [8D]

    Thanks Gran Chico,
When you look at the whole route of the proposed railway,
it look very interesting and has places that I would like to
visit.  It gives one the option of seeing more of that part of
Mexico without having to rent a car and drive for the whole trip.

You could also plan for a longer trip around the loop and down to
Palenque or break in into smaller sections depending upon the time available.

Do the proposals have the trains running both directions?

Loco Gringo might want to look at the possibility of planning and booking
different types of tours when this becomes available.

It wouldn't take much for me to up and run....
To another life.............somewhere in the sun.

I'd like to see the pedestrian/bike path next to 307 in akumal be open to foot traffic again like it used to be.  It would also be great to see that be a continuous path on both sides of the highway from cun to tul. I bet the locals who used that section to get around on bikes and foot to work would be behind that idea before a train.
