OMG a cottonmouth snake in my house!

Yep. Yesterday afternoon I was interviewing a new aide for Mom Betty. Sge arrived and I was on the deck. I hollered for her to come on in the side door and come on upstairs.
As she was coming up the atirs she said "Is that a rubber snake I just stepped on cause I think it moved?" RUHT-ROW! We don't have any plastic snakes... I crept down the stairs and sur nuff snake is sunning in the entryway in front of the glass door. I go back upstairs. Out the upper deck and down around on the outside. I call DH and ask "What kind of snake is black with a silvery pattern on its back" He says prolly a King snake. I round up tools and go to front door. I see thru the glass and it gone! Come back up and call the neighborhood men.. They come. Find snake. Kill snake and tell me its a cottonmouth water moccasin!!!! I was kinda thinkin the same after I saw the white belly. Checked images on the web and pertty sure thats what it was. Very distinctive markings similar to a copperhead but charcoal grey-black in color. Some stripes go around the belly.
Don't know how it got in or how long it could have been in here. Maybe all winter???
Its was too big to be a baby but big enuf to be a momma! Hopefully there are no babies or spouse left behind!

My back has been killing me, so I went downstairs today to hang on the inversion table. While hanging, I notice things on the floor... a dead dried-up spider over here... a dead pincher-bug over there... then I start thinking about Twirl's snake, and the opening to the crawlspace!

Ahhh, I think I'm done now!

Twirls....it is odd to find a Cottonmouth very for from water....and they like back water areas.....and they are not the kind of snake you want to mess with. It has been my experience over the years and a lot of time on the streams in Missouri that these creatures tend to be very aggressive.....is this what you saw.

Twirls - I'm kind of with Shifty on this one. If someone stepped on a cotton mouth - they wouldn't be asking if it was a rubber snake. They would be screaming "get me to the nearest ER and anti-venom. Cotton Mouths mean serious business.

I honestly can agree with crunch on this one. Time to MOVE. [:o]

I have seen more than my share of copper heads and cotton mouths.....my middle son got nailed by a copper head when he was a kid. Cotton mouth, depending where you find them run dark in color, seen some almost back and when they open their mouth it is a dead give away.....white as cotton.

We live on a river in Florida, so they are very very common down here. Rattlesnakes too. Cotton Mouths scare me worse than any rattlesnake. At least the rattlesnake gives off a warning.

Shifty - hope your son came out of that scary episode okay.[&o]

He should have known better.....taught the boys about snakes...he was ok after his trip to the hospital.....he has had a number of snakes and other creatures as pets....

I am no slouch when it comes to scary icky things, but a snake in the house is too much for me. No issues with one outside but never inside. To me, it doesn't matter what kind of snake it was...
