We have used National at Cancun Airport a couple of times in the past.  They were fast and friendly ... and expensive.  I never could get an idea of what the insurance was going to cost in advance from the website so you really don't know what you are going to pay until you get there.  And what I found was that zero deductable insurance is going to DOUBLE the cost of the rental... seems like I remember the amount being like $28 per day.  Anyway, after doing that and paying airport taxes a couple of times I switched to American/Cancun/Carribean and Easyway.  They will quote you a price including zero deductable insurance and they end up being cheaper.

Thanks, Playakath,

I have insurance  through  my American Express card, so hopefull the price quoted would be the total.   But I should check to be sure.
Glad to hear that the service was good.    Becky

$114 a week for a manual with a/c.   With the tax it's about $146.   It's only a deal if you don't need their insurance.

I don't think you should rent a car in Mexico without Mexican insurance. They can detain you until they verify that your insurance is valid if you have an accident.
The Mexican insurance will give you total peace of mind. We always rent from Cancunrentacar, Just reserved a car for 24 days with total insurance for about $900, The rates have gone up since last year but it's still a pretty good deal. Cancun always includes the insurance in the quote so you don't have any surprises. I'm sure that you'll pay more from National with insurance.
Just checked with National and the compact car WITH insurance is $330 a week. You can do better with Cancun or Easyway.

You can rent one right now for $30 a day. In a week or two the holiday and high season rates kick in and it goes to $43. Trust me I've done the research and even called cancun to find out why the rates go up so much in Jan. I go for the cheapest thing that rolls.[;)]

That was the case the last two years for me also. Not so this January. Where do you rent for $30 in Jan? I'll take it.
I also went back and checked the National site for Jan form the airport they want over $600 for a compact with ins. The $330 was without. YIKES

Check Easyway.  We just completed a 3 week rental of a compact with AC for a total cost with required insurance of $414. Plus since they pick you up and their office is out by the main highway you save the airport tax.  Also we find being able to avoid the airport traffic and head directly south when we pick up the car, and returning it is easy.  When you return the vehicle they simply drive you to your terminal in the same car so no bags to move to the vans etc.  We rent from them every year and they are great.  They gave us an upgraded car this year since we have rented from them many times and they know us.  They also will give you a 10% discount if you tell them you are a Loco Gringo member.  We always pay with a Visa or Master Card since the free extra insurance coverage these cards offer is a bonus and is is valid in Mexico.  Do keep in mind that the credit card insurance does not cover the required Mexican Liability coverage, so be sure to add it for about $10 per day. After working all year to enjoy our time on the beach, I'm not about to trust our good times on an email. Pick up the phone and have a little human contact with the person you will be spending 2-5 hundo with to rent a car. If  you will be renting from EasyWay you should be talking to Jesus. He is a great guy and he speaks English! Confirm your reservation and get an update on the weather too.    Tony

I responded to a post by Veneziagurl awhile ago about a 15 day rental around this current period from Easyway for $588 us. , saying that price seemed fair . When I priced my own dates for 15 days through Christmas and New Years the price rose to 1000 us , both with Easyway . Supply and Demand . Don't miss the Alaskans warning that you MUST pay the 10 bucks a day liability at a minimum and I agree with all the other posters in saying to get the bundled total insurance package . To really split hairs I believe that some credit card insurance states that if you take any of the rental car insurance then the credit card insurance is void and since you must take the mandatory liability , where does that leave you ? That last sentence very well might be Bullxit , but you know who's really , really good at bullxit ? Abogados . Don't know that word . Perfecto !

Please be happy always

Thanks for all the info and suggestions.  I finally got around  to calling American Express and they confirmed that the insurance I have through my credit card, does NOT include the third party liability in Mexico.  I still got a good rate through National, so I booked a car for a week starting January 19, 2012 for $263.87, including the TPL.    Becky

that maybe a good deal BUT!

Rental car pricing in Cun has spiraled out of controlled over the last year! For years car rental pricing in Cun has been fair and reasonable. Now you can rent a car in any major city for far less than in Cancun.

I have been tracking rental car pricing for the last 6 months. A rental car price for Christmas week on 9/2/11 was $99.00 now the same rental is $210.00 plus ins.. Another company was $185.00 now there $500.00 inc. full ins. Last year the same dates I paid $160.00 with full ins.... WHY have they gone up so much?

We have many friends in this part of the world (Quintana Roo )working for $5.00 a day or less and they have been saying for years that the cost of goods and services is out of control.

I called around down there and got nowhere with pricing. What I posted above seems to be the norm now. I have the compact for 24 days with full ins. in Jan/Feb and the absolute best I could do was $900. That's close to 50% higher than last year. I'm going to keep my eyes open until we go but things have changed radically.
Last Jan I paid $189 a week for three weeks.

I got a midsize from National at Cancun airport on Southwest website for $37 per week, or $49 with taxes, so it says. I will call them to find out about additional insurance costs. Can anyone comment? How is the service at National in Cancun airport? Thanks!

those of you that plan on using CC insurance in Mexico may want to reexamine your risk tolerance.  Any damages will need to be paid before you leave mexico or are released from jail.   typically you will need to submit a claim when you get home.     do you have room on your CC for damages up to and including wages lost?

tot,
By the time the insurance is added in, you will probably be paying closer to $37 per day, and the liability insurance is mandatory.
Some folks rely on their credit card insurance for CDW but as Katzgar points out, how high is your credit card limit and your risk tolerance? Mine is low, so I take all the insurance.
Only used National once, years ago, they were fine although my husband rented a VW Beetle (not realizing weather in May in Riviera Maya is different than in Cabo where we had a VW bug on our honeymoon). I promptly vetoed this, no problem getting another car.
