House visitor

Had a visitor today on the back terrace....that's a 6-inch ruler, by the way!

(Ignore the dirty terrace...rain, muddy dogs....)[;)]

Cool. Did you keep him for a pet and name him or just invite him for dinner?

BTW if you are looking for a name for him he's a male, so no girly names. Hairy might be appropriate.

Whale...how do you know if it's a male?  I know that you can tell certain spiders sexes by appearance...like Black Widow's (learning that one well here in Central Cal) How can you tell by this guy?  Just wonderin'.......

BTW, how do I post those big imbedded photos like you did? I thought I had the right code.

Just click on the box in Photobucket that says Direct Link. Then in your LG post click the little mountain box (or add image if it appears differently on your screen) and when "enter image URL" appears, right click in the box and click paste.

The two little barely visible hooks, on the underside of the front legs, that are circled in the picture are unique to the male. They use them to hold onto the female when mating.

Betcha thought it was the other end didn't you? Those are spinnerets and are used to spin a web. Both males and females have them.

Fred - you said he was on the menu for dinner.
Just curious how are you going to prepare him and does it involve any garlic?
