Non AI Hotel for family trip -- Help please!

I'd like to find a family friendly hotel (with a good pool!) near PDC if possible.  Have two boys, 9 and 12.  We plan to spend two days touring ruins and Xcaret, but otherwise just want a nice vacation spot.  Can be away from PDC as long as it is easy to get to restaurants, etc.  Need somewhere clean and well kept, upscale is nice but not stuffy. Visiting in early April.

Both look nice, but the pool at Playa Palms looks too small for two active boys (although the beach looks gorgeous).  I'll take a look at the Hotel Karma.  Thanks!!

I'm a big fan of the Hotel Riviera del Sol up in the Little Italy neighborhood. We've stayed there several times and like it a lot.

Check out LocoGringo's list of Playa hotels -- lots of good choices there.

I'm looking for a hotel with a good pool area for kids....hopefully one that attracts other families.  Would Akumal be a better option for finding a hotel good for active kids?

FLMom--it sounds liek the Hotel Akumal Caribe/Villas Maya is the perfect place for you. Small hotel with a section that is bungalows, nice pool, right on Akumal Bay, and just very short walks to retaurants & shops. We like the bungalows--very quiet, and they are a little larger than the hotel rooms.

I think you would really like Akumal.  I took my family down in Dec., one grandson is 13 yrs old and younger ones are 6....  We stayed our first and last nights in Playa.  We had fun in Playa, but I wouldn't think to let the 13 yr old go exploring on his own.  Akumal was very family oriented, small and very relaxed.  There's lots to see in the beach area and it's very convenient for getting snacks and refreshments.  Also the snorkeling is great!  Have a wonderful time!
