From Bill in Tulsa

I just heard from Tankah, Stacy talked to her mother. They took a direct hit. Lost all her walls, water in the house and water up to the street. She is headed to Akumal and when I hear more I will post it here. Prayers to all in the area. bill

Go to last pages of Emily and the Playa info looks good but they are mentioning that Akumal and Tulum did not fair so well.

I spoke with my Architect in Tulum. Tulum seems to be OK he said, lots of downed trees and palapa damage. Julian stayed at our house in Tankah. He said that our house and our neighbors are reportedly OK but no trees or plants ! I dont know what that translates to exactly but he was on his way to check and I have been trying to call him but am not getting through as of yet.

Report From Laura Bush (Owner of Lo Ha and Akumal Caribe Hotel among other things)

Hello to all,

I am in Canada and have just got a call from my manager and would like to give you what information I have

All our staff that stayed in Akumal are fine.( only our core management staff stayed in the rooms above the Super Chomak and inside the Super Chomak. )

My sister and RC are fine. They stayed in my sisters back house of Tajkumal.

The damage was minor in comparison of what it could have been. We were expecting a total destruction of our beach side buildings made of Palapa. The snack bar only lost about 4 meters of roof, and the Lolha Restaurant just one section of Palapa roof by the Pizzeria. The large Millenium Pinata is down! It lasted 5 years though!

There will be massive clean up, lots of water damage, and some broken windows, and blown out Air Conditioners. The roof to our maintenance bodega blew off and some damage to our staff minibus.

The worst damage was to the vegetation.

Others had more damage.

Lots of windows broken at Las Casitas reception.

Bob Mulgrew’s truck had a tree fall on it, and the windshield broke.

Charlene’s house is ok, but upstairs they got major damage to their contents because the windows blew.

Lots of downed light posts along the road to Yalku.

Ruben’s store had the palapa blow off and lots of water damage.

Very sad, my cats, were supposed to be safe in a second floor staff room behind the Super Chomak but the protector for the window blew out, and they are gone. I am truly hoping that they are found and that they were not hurt. As some of you know, I have many cats.

I am not sure how my house is, but from the outside, the wood protectors are still in place. My ducks, goose, parakeets, turtles, rabbit, parrot are all inside! Hopefully just scared.

My dog went to Akumal Pueblo with our dear friend and retired Nanny, Mireya, and should be safe, I am hoping.

Gynna’s studio had some cracked windows.

Lots of damage at the Ecological Center, All doors and windows blown out apparently and the staff apartments that had Palapa are blown off.

Travel between Chemuyil and Akumal was possible this morning but I have no idea if the highway is clear between Akumal and Cancun.

I hope this reaches those that might be waiting to hear a bit of news about Akumal.

Thanks Laura for the update. It will put lots of our hearts to ease. we can rebuild.

I just heard from my caretaker at Adventuras Akumal. All is well. The phones are working. There is a lot of damage to trees and beach. We do have sand and water inside, but it is workable. There is no electricity at this time.

Here is a report on damage to Playa Blanca in Half Moon Bay, which doesn't sound too bad, coming from someone who spoke to Nan at Green Eyes Maintenance. Hopefully it is a representation of minimal damage to all condos there.

This is the assessment of Playa Blanca.

#1,2,3 - Are Fine. Boards held and no problem
#4 - Boards didn't hold - Patio Glass Door Gone - Will have Water Damage
#5 - Fine
#6 - Fine
#7 - Boards didn't hold - Patio Glass Door Gone - another window on the side gone -- assumes there will be some water damage.
#8 - Fine

No Electricity - Nan thinks a week until it gets on is optimistic. She indicated that the streetlights along the highway - many are down and have taken down power lines. Also, that satellite communication is down. Some phone lines are working-- most not. She was calling from a phone in the Pablato.

I told Nan some people might want to come down. She didn't know if they could get there.

Just heard in from Mother-in-Law who just returned to Puerto Aventuras:
Lots of tree damage, maybe 50%. Roof tiles, Garage doors. Some of our windows. She has 2 doors blown off hinges. No power or water. She has her phone now, the one that does not require electricity. (Note to self: keep an old phone.)
No beach erosion, no storm surge water filtration.... No major structural damage. Vegetation palapas are disposable, you get what you pay for.

Lots of chaos but considering what could have been?

More good news from Akumal, this from Bill's board: http://www.xcalak.tv/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=447

Jen at Turtle Bay reports in:

quote:

Greetingsto all.
We are all okay & survived Emily. We boarded up the rest on Sat, pulled all furniture, plants, took down all fans, lights & cut all the trees surrounding the bakery. Did the same with the house, moved everything downstairs & got the hell out of town early Sun am. I left with Dani & Scott, Michael, Fabian, Rocio, Amy & John & Tommy. We had a 7 car caravan with 9 people, 9 dogs & 15 cats. Of course since I am the craziest one of all I had all of my 11 animals with me in the pathfinder. The traveling zoo. Bart stayed behind tofinish batting down the hatches & went to Chetuymil, we on the other hand took the 9 hour drive to Pallenque. Rocio & Dani had found a nice hotel with a vet clinic that would board all of our animals. <The hurricane hit >Akumal with a force of 135mph, basically eye was directly above. Linda & Donny had decied to stay inher house in Tankah, <I was in contact with them till aboiut 10:30 at night <& at that point the winds were going about 85-90. The eye cameabout 1:30. Due to not much rain, Akumal faired pretty well. Most of the damage seems to be Palapa damage. Bud´s house was never boarded up >& blew out all the windows, Casa del Sol received some damage. The bakery lost some of it´s palapa, our Tankah were blown off the roof & the gas lines torn off the wall but seems to be holding together well. Out palapa upstairs at the house seems to be a bit more ventilated then before & we will probably be living downstairs for a while. Teri lost a lot of hewr palapa as well and they are in Yal cu cai #4.
Buddha Gardens Spa made it, just a little more slanted then before. Reports that Puerto Adventures was hit pretty bad, & have heard that the <Oasis & Italian Resot in Akumal hade some good damage, mostly all the palapas are gone. The biggest loss is all the trees & vegetation. Bart said that is the most shocking. The mangrove behind the rest is gone, all the gardens are goone, power should be out for a while, hard phone lines made it, cell tower in Akumal is down but the one in Tulum is okay. In the pueblo, not nearly as much damage as you would think. Most of the damage was on the front lower side. Once you go up the hill hardly any damage. All of the employees of ours came out ok & I don´t believe they lost any oif the houses. We head back this morning. Will be in contact as soon as possible. On another animal note, Bart has seen all the bakery cats except one who is probably around somewhere & all the cats from Konomi made it as well. The bunglows received some good damage but are stillstanding, all the windows in CEA blown out. We have a lot of work ahead of us but everything should be back to business in a few weeks <& by next high season after the rainy season all the vegetation will start to be back. It´s hard work living inparadise. To Cami & Richard, all pictures were removed, not sure about the condition of palapa. Talk to you all soon.

This is an e-mail I just received from ABR:

Tuesday, July 19, 2005 9:25 AM
Subject: AKUMAL BEACH RESORT

Dear Partners,

Please find below a report regarding Akumal Beach Resort conditions after Hurricane Emily.

First of all, we are pleased to inform you that no one of our guests or staff has been injured by Emily. All guests have been evacuated to Merida or Valladolid.

Unfortunately some of our infrastructures have been damaged. All the “palapas” roofs of the reception, main bar, Snack bar, main restaurant and Mexican and Italian restaurants have been seriously damaged.

We are still evaluating others damages, like distribution system, and all “back of the house” operation system. Due to that reason we are not able to continue the normal operation for a while (we hope short time). We will advise you as soon we have intended reopening dates. (We believe it will take at least one month).

As act of Force Majeure, the hotel policy is to refund the portion of the unused bookings already paid.

We hope to get back in operation very soon and we would like to thank you for your support in this circumstance.

Best regards

I also posted this to the "Soliman Bay" thread - talking about Andy Field, owner of Casa del Corazon in Soliman:

Just got this email from a mutual acquaintance:

"I spoke briefly with Andy yesterday before losing the connection. They are fine, Casa Corazon is OK , some trees down etc. The hardest hit however is Puerto Aventuras"

That's all the info he had. I'll post any updates.

I have just spoken to Jamie at Vista del Mar in North Akumal. His report:
While there is much debris, the road to Akumal is now passable and the beaches are intact, sustaining minimal erosion.
The Buena Vida has some roof damage, but will be open shorter hours starting Wednesday or Thursday.
The Corner Store and Super Chomak are open for business.
The condos and hotel will be open for business as soon as power is restored. The electric company has brought in 3,000 electrical workers to help restore power to the area. It is possible we could have electricity within 7-14 days.
Vegetation, retaining walls, palapas, and trees were wiped out at Vista del Mar. Some windows broken, but no structural damage. Minimal water damage.
Akumal Dive Adventures will be closed until power is restored.
Overall damage is less than what was expected. Massive cean up underway.

After spending the hurricane night in Valladolid we drove into Akumal the next morning, dodging trees all the way. From Tulum on up most of the major power lines were down, many snapped in half. As we drove into Akumal the first thing noticeable was that the large trees at the entrance near the stores were down. Nothing looks the same. Many roofs off, lots of trees down, and the jungle west of the road past town is flattened. Most of the local boats survived, only a couple tops ripped off. It was clear that the waves went across the road in places, especially near the dive shop. The good news is that our friends who live there are all ok. They are as resilient as always, and are taking it a day at a time. The condo we were in, Luna Azul, showed no structural damage, but some broken glass and downspout ripped off, and the beach palapas turned upside down or completely gone. The worst was the beach littered with turtle eggs. Some of them seemed intact and we were speculating whether they could be replanted. Anyway, as depressing as all this sounds, the locals are mostly optomistic and will have it back in shape in no time, and the jungle always grows...

Frank and Deb

Valladolid was alot of thuder, lightning, wind, rain, hail, breaking glass, and falling trees. Nothing like Akumal though as there was no ocean nearby. My idiot husband was trying to take pictures, and finally fell asleep in his clothes with his sandals on. We stayed dry, taped up our windows in the motel room with duct tape we brought and had plenty of cold beer. We had most of our things in the closet and valuables in plastic. Next door to us was another couple who were staying in Akumal and we have run into them several times since so the hurricane was a good way to meet new people. All in all Valladolid got off very light compared to Akumal. We haven´t heard anything about Merida, but did run into people from Playa and Cancun.

Report from Helmie Atari, Akumal Management Company
The Reef Condominiums, Half Moon Bay

I just got a report from our management team on the condition of The Reef and wanted to pass it along.

The building came through the storm incredibly well. Helmie reports that there was no structural damage, and that the hurricane boards that AMC installed weathered the onslaught well. There was essentially no glass loss nor damage to interior contents as a result.

The only loss was to two panes of glass (cracks--not blown out) in the Penthouse, as well as damage to one screen door.

Guests have already returned to the building. The Sheffields that had been in the Penthouse when the evacuation was called are now back there and seem to be coping fine with the lack of electricity. As far as I know, Gloria, the owner of Unit A on the ground floor, has also returned but I don't have confirmation of that.

The Federal Electric Commission has committed to have the power back on within two weeks. Given that many of the poles were taken out by the storm that will require no small effort, but Helmie says he has been impressed with the government's response so far.

All six units at The Reef are ready for occupancy. Akumal Management Co. is doing the minor cleanup necessary--mopping up some water and sweeping up some sand. It looks as though there wll be no need to cancel reservations on the books--assuming power is restored soon.

AMC is preparing a detailed management report to owners of all its properties which should be out to them tonight.

All those prayers for safe passage through this storm must have been heard!

Don
Owner at The Reef

This is apparently about the Palladium - Whale

From: filnuovum Sent: 7/19/2005 10:19 PM Lets see. If I say that there is abar open today there is a bar open today. If I say the restaurants are ok is because they are ok. Except for El Gran Azul because I want, I need to be sure at 100 % that is safe for everybody. I am not a palapa expert but, at least, before doing something I want to have the information to decide. If I say the beach bar will be open tomorrow is because it will be open tomorrow. No snaks because there is no terrace to sit on but the bar and its palapa are ok. A little bit damage but ok. The kids club is ready. It will open tomorrow. The beach is damaged if I refer to palapas (all gone) and many palm tress damaged and we will have to cut them but we have already ordered 2000 new palm trees (we have already cleaned the beach by the south side of the resort as we were going to do it anyway for the two new resorts) You can imagine what the machines we have at the new resorts construction can do in hours. The beach by the beach bar, the kids club and the water sport center (that will be offering our services tomorrow) will be cleaned and we will place about 100 sunbeds there. And, bla, bla, bla. I have always said we are not at 100 %. The lobbies are damaged seriously but the Colonial one is cleaned already and working yet at the Kantenah one. Also at the theatre. We will start building the new roofs tomorrow. We are working day and night. And not to extend it a lot I will simply say two things: yes, my staff is great. This morning before I decided to keep the resort open, I had a meeting with most of them at 7 am and told them that we were going to keep everybody's jobs, even if we had to close for three months or a year. This poor people, with their effort has helped us to keep everybody safe. We do not need to keep the place open to make money. We have insurances that covers even ALL cancellation, early departures and future departures or cancelations. But, if one of our biggest partners (APPLE or Vacances) have a problem in other resorts that may be do not have the possibility to stay open (for example, we are producing our own electricity since before EMILY arrived and there is no public suply yet) we, as good partners have to do all we can. But, please allow me a joke, I am from Ibiza, the nicest place in this world and, to be honest, that makes the difference. I do not know what the expression "sugar coated" means exactly but I have an idea. And yes, I am proud of my staff, of course. I am proud of my mannaging team, and yes, I am very proud even of myself. To conclude, a tone of thanks to all those ones who have been worried for use, who had us in their thoughts and prayers. Felipe

I just hung up the phone with Roberto at Hacienda de la Tortuga. He asked that I pass along this information:

The hardest hit area in Akumal suffered substantial damage - from Tortuga to La Mirage. Relatively speaking, he said Luna Azul was in pretty good shape. Eight units in Tortuga have significant damage. He reports that repairs are underway. In fact, new mattresses and generators are expected today, I believe. The generators will give the property limited power and water until all is restored.

I also asked about the turtles. All nests in the area appear to be lost. Following the hurricane, the beach looked like a golf course. He and his staff have cleaned the beach of the eggs to prevent disease that may be harmful to future nesting.
