Hi everyone,
If you had only a week and it was your fist time to the Mayan Riv where you spend the week? I am taking my sister & her two kids and it'll be their first time to this part of Mexico (actually to Mexico in general) and we're considering renting Casa Caterina on Soliman Bay. But I hear so so many raves on this forum about Akumal. Do you suggest we split the week and stay in both places? Or can we easily visit, from Soliman Bay, the things that Akumal has to offer? One criteria is for us to introduce the kids to snorkeling. This needs to happen in a safe place with very calm water. Will we find such places in or near Soliman Bay or would Akumal be better able to offer this?

Hi Seababe,
I think half moon bay should be alright. The reef tends to keep things calm. The water doesn't get too deep and there's more to see within close vicinity to shore. I inquired about Soliman bay. Damselfish spent 10 days there. Not much of a coral head to speak of. Also Soliman is somewhat isolated. Approx. 10 minutes from Tulum about 20 from Akumal.Doesn't seem like much but when you have to get in the car just to get a bottle of water...

I'd recommend someplace on Akumal Bay or Half Moon Bay. Soliman is nice but pretty isolated. Akumal Bay for kids snorkeling is ideal. Sandy right out into the water without the coral close to the surface (can be difficult for novices). Half Moon is a bit hard on the feet, too.

Vista Del Mar has 3 bedroom condos. This oughta cover the 6 of you. It is also a nice place and a nice location on Half Moon Bay.

HEY Babe.........HEHEHE. Just had to say that!

Both Soliman Bay and Akumal Bay are very suitable for your expectations. Just a quick question.

Do your (the) kids already know how to swim? Strong swimmers? How old are they?

If proficient in swimming there are variables to your querie. If not, don't take em' to the ocean without EXTREME supervision.

For MD's (miniture dolphins), outfit them for the worst case scenario. Vests, fins, masks, snorkles, land leashes, anchors, empty water bottles in the swim trunks, etc, and most of all, SUPERVISION.

For YD's (young dolphins) in your group, evaluate them on a case by case basis. Fins for everyone. Masks for everyone. Snorkles too. Set guidelines for expectations and responsibilities that allow you NOT to make ocean rescues. I often consume tequila on vacation and want my YD's to watch out for me! HEHEHE.

Soliman Bay properties (most of em') provide sea kayaks that allow one to paddle about 400 meters out to the reef area. Tie off your kayak to the buoy and snorkle the interior reef to your hearts content. You WILL accompany the YD's (kids that swim well) on these excursions.

Beachside is tranquill and shallow. Provide the YD's and MD's with foot protection while they splash in the shallows. The Caribbean always has things that you may not want to step on. Plenty of shallow water and calm conditions to teach the AD's (all dolphins) to snorkle here.

Akumal Bay is ideal for AD's (All Dolphins). The bay is protected by the reef and is sandy, shallow, and warm. Same rules apply for kids as in the above catagories. More boats in Akumal Bay and more people. Shorter distance out to the reef but the same responsibilities apply to YD's as well as YOU. Slightly easier to lose track of AD's due to the amount of distractions on this bay. Closer to venues like ice-cream and hamburgers, but less privacy overall.

On second thought........it doesn't matter!

MD's, YD's, and AD's will love the ROO. Go, get wet, wear sunscreen, and as my saying goes....

I would definately choose Akumal. Much more to see and do in a small village type atmosphere. Great snorkeling and restaurants. Soliman Bay is also beautiful, however with the number of people going, I think Akumal has a lot more to offer. We always stay at Luna Azul, so I am not aware of places large enough to hold 6 people. On a trip last March we had 5 in a condo and I guess 1 could have slept on a couch, but without much privacy. Whatever you decide, stay in one place. Packing up a group of six from a condo and moving 20 minutes down the road will definately not help the "we're on vacation" happiness. Hope this helps. Have fun.

Love that Akumal

If you want to be close to Akumal Bay and yet a bit more private, try the Cannon House. The main part of the house has two bedrooms, thus accommodating the 4 adults. There are daybeds in the sitting area that can serve the kids. You probably won't find anything much closer to Akumal Bay, with the possible exception of the casitas. Don't know right offhand where you'll find the casitas listed, but Locogringo does handle the Cannon House.

I was there with my grandkids, ages 8 and 11, and they just adored Soliman Bay. BUT . . . this was their third trip to the MR in three years and they knew exactly what they wanted to do. Which was mostly building Mayan ruins and volcanoes on the beach, snorkeling from their front door (even if it wasn't the best), and playing in the pool. In the repeat performance category, they chose Yal Ku (two trips in one day--early morning and late afternoon); a half-day fishing trip; the surf south of Tulum; and the swings and second story palapas at La Buena Vida.

I agree that for a first trip either Akumal or Half Moon Bay is the best bet.

Ciao Marco Antonio,
you have a very Italian sounding name.... just wondering about it cuz I just got back from living in Italy for the past year and half..... Anyway to answer your questoin, the youngest kid won't be snorkeling, he'll be paddling with mom at the sea's edge I imagine. The other kid is 6 years old and a good swimmer in a pool but he hasn't done hardly any sea swimming (he lives in Rochester NY!) and so I do want us to be a place with safe calm water when we introduce him to snorkeling. Should we get him a vest in the US? I have never used one but I keep hearing people talk about them on this forum.....??

Thanks!

Actually I think my nephew that I am talking about (for snorkeling) is 7, not 6.

Seababe,

As far as vests go, it's probably easier to rent one in Akumal than to carry one in your luggage. More is LESS fun. (as far as baggage is concerned)

Hey I checked out your web-site. What a cool ideal. Weddings in Italy. Could there possibly be a more romatic place?

My visits to Europe haven't included Italy as of yet, but I'm thinking! Italian Alps? Sailplane rentals for Marco? Margarita left at the alter waiting to renew our vows while I soar the Alps? Ummmmmmmmmm..........

Marco Antonio sounds Italian, but I'm just a "Huero Mexicano."

Have a great trip.
