Hi, Wonderful forum you all have here. I have enjoyed reading many posts as I look forward to being back in Mexico. We are heading back to Q. Roo for 5th time this winter. We have spent time in PDC, Tulum and Xcalak. We love Tulum the best. Does anyone have recommendations for resturants in town? We have enjoyed the polloritas but never eaten anywhere else. Also, how is the town? Last year there was lots of road construction going on.....the area is changing and growing so quickly! Any suggestions would be most appreciated . Thanks.

I'm forever thankful for the Italian population in Tulum that serves great food. I know most people go to Mexico for Mexican food...so this may not be what you are looking for. Most people like La Nave in town (which is good), but I like Quiero Mas for pizza and gnocchi.

Tulum is my favorite place to dine...you have Charlies Mexican, Los Pepes, Don Cafetos,Taqueria Mariachi, La Nave...well, that's all I can remember now, but go on in to Chemuyil to Pizzaria Leo's...the food is great!

LocoG Guest, I'm serious, find the the lady that sell Sopes after 7:00 PM next door to "The Weary Traveler." Wonderful home-made chicken, beef, pork, or vegetables served on small tortillas. She has no shop, and works out of her house. She doesn't show up until after 7:00PM. She wheels out her gas barbecue, a couple of tables and chairs and everyone shows up. I fed the family (four of us) two - three sopes each with sodas and tip for $20.00 USD. I say the sopes are small, but when you include the salsa, vegies and other condiments, they are huge. Obviously she caters to the youthful back-packing crowd from around the world. The Weary Traveler is a youth hostel that has internet service for about $2.00 USD per hour. Think that I sent you crazy gringos a message from there back in June of 2003. Rosa from Casa Del Corazon turned us on to the Sopes Lady. We drove all around Tulum looking for her, and then finally we quit searching and just waited on the street. She showed, and we dined. We enjoyed! It was the only place that my daughters and Margarita made sure that we visited twice. Well okay, we did Leo's in Cheyumil twice too. Sure hope that she is still there when we hit the ROO in Marzo. Others in Tulum to NOT miss is La Nave, Pollos Asados, and Tacos Ricos! Buen Provecho, Marco Antonio

Hey Marco- Could a vegetarian (me) dine at the sopes-lady's house? This is exactly what my husband is always looking for.

Pepper, It probably depends on how devout you are as a "vegetable." I imagine that the veggies are cooked in some kind of meat sauce or broth. They're good though. Marco Antonio

Marco- That's way they cook 'em. Precicely why I avoid most true Mexican restaurants here in Big D. Not a good scene after I eat something like that. I'll send my husband and I'll savor my homemade gnocchi.

I once purchased 2 tacos for $1 from a push cart (a mom and her daughter) on the corner of 307 at the San Francisco. I understand that the vendors usually show up at aroun 3 or 4pm. Yumm. I want more. Just a few store fronts into Tulum from the San Francisco, on the opposite side of the road (307) is a liquor store and a fish market -- next door is a taco guy and he sells out quickly. He was out by 3pm. Got to get to him early..

Pepper, as a vegitarian I can understand your situation. When in doubt, order guacamole. Or eggs. You can always get this. "No carne" doesn't always work. Many times I had a meal that they physically removed the chunks of meat...Sheesh You have to loosen your standards. I found that even a little broth or tainted oil really didn't do too much damage. Just try a little at first. THen order the guacomole. The most important thing I did learn is that they do not understand WHY? So eat Italian or guacomole. Such is our life.........

Off topic for just a little bit -- While I wouldn't consider myself a vegitarian, my carne intake is a conservative one -- although if someone was offering up a Prime Rib Roast dinner I don't think that I'd be passing it up. With all of that said, I have a complete respect for anyones choice of what they choose to put into their body -- but just curious: With the vegitarian diet, is it a "health" thing or is it a "none animal usage" thing?

ADK- I just simply don't like meat. Any kind and never have. According to my mom, I used to sneak it into a napkin and throw it away when I was a kid. Needa- It's great in Tulum because there are so many veg choices. With people being more open minded down that way. PDC is great for a veg too.

Mine is a totally animal ethics thing. I drink, I smoke. (oh yes, not after this next trip!!!) (HEY there is no meat in either of those things) I could give you the whole history of hunting brothers and chasing me around with cut off animal parts,...but I will spare you. I'm 51 yrs. and I have always wanted to live this life. 8 years ago, after the 4 boys were raised, one of my sons decided to become a vegitarian. One week later I was one also. Never have looked back. I am one of those: "Nothing with a face" Vegitarians.

And as a side note: I make the BEST Prime Rib. I cook it, just don't eat it. Hey, I have a lot of men counting one me.

Not to be this pest, however, I think I know what the question actually was. If you havn't had any animal protien for years and then you accidentally get a little broth, you can really get sick. It is something that a meat-eater isn't familiar with. I am thankfull for the Tulum tips. We stayed there two years ago and didn't venture out to all these restaurants that I am now learning about. ATE ALOT OF GUACAMOLE.........

Needa- I eat a fair amount of guac too. Ana y Jose has the best. I switch between that and the club sandwich w/o meat for lunch. Zamas used to have a vegetatian empanada at lunch - I would imagine they still do.
