What does "tips/gratuities included" mean?

I'm not quite sure what it means when tour compnies write that tips/gratuities are included.
What percent of my daily hotel rate goes to the waiters, cooks, maids etc..?
Does anyone know how this works?

Ignore it...tip anybody that give you good service from waiters, maids,grounds keepers, bathroom cleaners. For many of the folks that work on these resorts the tips is what feeds their kids and pays their bills

The only time I alter my normal 20% tip is if the service is abhorant and they act like they don't care or if they add in a tip before I get my bill. That second one hacks me off because I'm a good tipper. But I understand why they do it. I've been told the Italians in Tulum don't tip at all so they have to get it some how.

I have found that that Phrase Does Not Mean Anything to the workers, I think the Owners GET the TIP Included.

Even though the gratuity is built into your total bill, I always tip because the workers work their butts off and so appreciate a tip.

I feel if I am so blessed that I am able to take a vacation there, then the least I can do is spread it around.

It just means they dont charge you for tips seperately, like on a cruise. But it doesnt mean the staff get tips.

Tips & gratuities included means squat. The maids, waiters, bartenders, etc. see none of that.

Europeans in general don't tip or tip poorly according to OUR standards...I worked as a waitress in a 4 start hotel and I knew if a German or whatever came through the dor, I was working for my minimum wages on that table....

Do what YOU think is right.....tip for good service if you think they gave you what you wanted for your stay. Besides, if you tip well on your first day, THEY REMEMBER YOU and take good care of you from then on...

I know certain resorts in Jamaica (Sandals/Couples) where employees can be fired on the spot for taking tips...do certain resorts in Mexico have the same "rule?"

I've never heard of that... although, I haven't been to an AI or Jamaica. That seems a little foolish in that it's not the waitperson's fault if a vacationer tips for service.

I've heard of that before referred to Sandals Resorts. Has anybody been to a Sandals in Mexico? Wonder if they have the same policy. There is always a way to get the tip to the person if you are very discrete.

We were at a Sandals in Jamaica. People were tipping but very discretely - hand to hand, not left on the table. We left a tip for the dive & snorkel crew as we spent a lot of time with them over the week.

As a frequent visitor to South Beach when it was just Miami Beach, I noticed many years ago that the restaurants started including tip in the bill. Which is needless to say totally foreign to American practices. One day a waiter explained that in Europe the bill includes the tip and therefore the European clientele would generally not leave a tip assuming it was included....therefore, the practice was put into place. So perhaps it would be unfair to accuse 'Germans', 'Italians' or any European of being cheap or stingy, if in fact that is the standard at home, and perhaps they don't know any better (note: I'm not European).

In addition, you have to really wonder how an industry convinced the going public to pay it's employees directly !! I would love to have a few other businesses like that.
