Bacalar (The Lagoon of the Seven Colors) is located south of Xcalak before you hit Chetumal on Hwy. 307. It's about a 4 hour drive from Play del Carmen. Laguna Bacalar, from what I remember, is about 37 kilometers long and 1 kilometer wide. Fresh water and very beautiful. They call it the Lagoon of the Seven Colors due to the different shades of blue you can see on the water. We stayed, this time, at the Laguna Bacalar. A beautiful hotel on the lake for around $450 pesos a night. The town of Bacalar is somewhat large but nice. Lots of great places to eat. There are many ruins to be seen close to this area along with a fort and Cenote Azul. the lake is sometimes so calm, you can see the clouds in it.
