Hi! All
Does anyone know if the Grand Sirenis has Snorkeling vests for use, rent or sale? And if so would you know prices? meme! and I are not very good swimmers but would like to go snorkeling. We have masks and snorkels but no floatation. Nowhere in the town we live in do they have them but I could go down to the US or into vancouver if I have to.
Thanks papaken

If you can't get a vest try one of those pool noodles, I have seen people use them, wrapped around their waist, looks funny but does the trick. cheaper too!

The pool noodles are great! We went on a snorkel trip in the Bahamas and since we were all pretty good swimmers they didn't make us wear life vest but offered the noodles to hang onto. It allowed you to get your face in the water and we just hung onto them and kicked around....when we were tired we would just put them under the arms and float....plus they were bright colors and we could easily be seen. I wish they would fit in a suitcase better...

Becky = I have a friend that travels everywhere with her stupid noodle. She bends it around the outside of the inside of her luggage. Does that make sense? She kinda has a big bag. Or buy one down there and don't transport one.

If you're not a good swimmer, bite the bullet and buy an inflatable snorkel vest. They are around $20, take up very little space in your luggage and give great peace of mind. I'd even advise them if you are a good swimmer. It's nice to inflate a little and relax in one spot or have it on if you ever run into trouble. You'll probably find inflating it less and less as your trip goes on.

papaken,

I purchased a snorkelling vest for DW from Ocean Sports in Edmonton. It is a professional style floatation vest which I highly recommend. I paid $200 CAD a couple of years ago. Ocean Sports now has them listed for $180 CAD but I see the same vest online at Leisure Pro, right now, for $85 USD. Here's a link:

http://www.leisurepro.com/prod/SCPCSV.html

DW is a non-swimmer, petrified of the water but I managed to get her out snorkelling with one of these vests. At $200 CAD (2 years ago) it was expensive but the degree of safety it offers was worth it. At $85 USD, right this minute, it is a deal you cannot pass up.

I almost forgot, I should add that we had an under crotch strap installed after the first vacation to keep it from riding up to the armpits when inflated excessively. It's much better now.

The Sirenis doesn't have the snorkel vests, they have life vests to use. They're bulky. Buy your own vest, IMO.

the added visibility with piece of mind are good reasons to buy your own vests.

Are the inflatable snorkel vests durable? Do they have separate compartments? Can they be relied on by a bad swimmer like myself?

Thx All
Found a shop (Langley Diving Centre) about a half hour drive away and they are ordering vests for us. Funny part was the instructor (Polo) that I talked to is originally from Cozumel. Says we will really enjoy snorkeling much more if feeling safer. As well as not getting as fatiqued.
Thx again papaken

I have used mine on 4 trips - total of 6 weeks and no signs of wear. Mine is 1 compartment and this bad swimmer loves hers. I can swim a bit but not enough to snorkel for over an hour at a time. It also means I can drift along to watch something without any movement to disturb it. If I need to adjust my mask or something, I bend my knees behind to pull up my feet/fins so I don't risk brushing something or disturbing sand. You can also roll over on your back to do that. Mine is yellow so I'm easy to spot. I figure it's safer for me, the wildlife and the coral.

Yes, the snorkel vests to give that extra piece of mind to poor swimmers. Nippers tips are great! I have found that you have so much buoyancy in the salt water that you just bob anyway. But still, the snorkel vests are nice because they give that sense of security without alot of bulkiness.

I generally snorkel without one unless I'm out in the open ocean. Others appreciate having one all the time. You can deflate them right down to nothing if it becomes a bother.

I got two new ones on e-bay this year, and with shipping and everything they still were less than $30 each. We have always just relied on the life jackets at the resorts in the past, because we had our own snorkel equipment, but it got to be a pain to have to go sign out the life jackets, and sometimes (especially at Barcelo) the life jackets were a long way from where we wanted to snorkel. They store flat in your suitcase and inflate with just a few puffs of air, and we can take them to Akumal or Yalku or anywhere else we want to snorkel. My husband scraped against a rock with his and it didn't seem to do any damage, so I think they are pretty sturdy. Hope they last us many years!

Another nice exhumation!
