My family and I took a trip down into the biosphere in July. It's beautiful and untamed. We weren't too far in and found a spot to use as a beach. A few locals were around. We walked a bit to the south. Since this area is not raked, the flotsom accumulates. We saw tons of plastic bottles, scuba gear, toys and even a small freezer. Where does all this stuff come from?

Unfortunately, some of it is dumped there. Some of it also comes from the cruise ships.

when I was in Xcalak, a property owner told me that he sees a cruise ship, and 2 days later the beach is full of straws, stir stix, and plastic cups.

This is a little off subject, but trash is trash, everywhere, and recyling pays...My 70+ mom and step dad walk the beaches of N. San Diego county, and pick up beer bottles, cans and booze bottles after weekends of other folks partying.....the partiers must forget that in Calif. they pay a deposit on each bottle/can.....they rack up a nice meal at a fancy type restaurant everymonth with their earnings....hey, if you want to toss cash at us, we will take it! We saw a lot of stuff washed in on a beach in the west end of punta cana beaches, hard to fathom where it had come from, or why, but it must have been tossed overboard from something.....

Some of it also comes from the cruise ships. Maybe 20 yrs ago, even 15, but not today. Sure, there is the occassional overboard item just as there is from yachts or even day boats. Cruise ships do not dumb their trash into the ocean. They have full "waste management" and recycling centers onboard. Cruise ship trash and recycling is actually weighed when it's off-loaded and there isn't much room for error from very accurate estimations of how much the cruise should be producing and what's off-loaded. Same for recylables. Like all sectors of the tourism and transportation industries, cruising has it's good and bad points. Just don't be so quick to blame everything happening in the ocean or along the coastlines on cruise ships. It's more likely that alot of that trash you see in Mexico is coming from the US and South America. Anywhere in the world where you find beaches you find international trash.

Some of the garbage does come from the cruise ships. My nephew works on one and verified this. Of course there are alot of sources, especially from the locals and smaller boats.

Yes, some cruise ships are still throwing their stuff overboard. Watch some of he news networks--they're still showing tapes folks have made showing stuff being thrown off in the middle of the night.

ORIGINAL: Iguana Mama Yes, some cruise ships are still throwing their stuff overboard. Watch some of he news networks--they're still showing tapes folks have made showing stuff being thrown off in the middle of the night. It's a rare occurance, not common practice. And when it happens it's 99% the poor judgement a crew member, not line endorsed policy. Not saying it never happens, just that it's not accurate to say it is what ships do or ellude that it's a huge contributer to the garbage problem. The industry as a whole has gone to great lengths and expense to really clean up their operations and implement "best practices" standards that they have to abide by. There are severe fines and bad PR and none of the lines risk that in the day and age of camera phones, etc and instant Internet posting... ANYTHING that a single ship does is media exposed to death. They are still using footage from 3yr old events on some shows to make a point. They just don't bother mentioning that it's old news. And like most media stories done for effect, when an incident is properly investigated and the results aren't what they want, they don't report them. I hear about things that happen on ships that don't make the news, and stuff that is "settled" so it won't. Garbage dumping doesn't make the list. Island hotels do more damage to the ocean and their coastlines then cruise ships. The industry, like all, has it's good and bad points, but it does get alot of undeserved blame too. I've worked for the industry, it's association, educational and non-profit group for 14yrs. I still have some of these people as clients. I also do work for eco groups, dive companies, and smaller destination based tourism interests so I get a variety of info and access to studies and research that comes from lots of different perspectives.

I just returned from the area and I was rather shocked after seeing this too.... My thinking is the local people are the guilty parties. Perhaps I sound judgemental and may **** a few people off but I feel many of the locals down there do not give a rats ass about the environment. I saw it in person more than once the past 10 days (and several other trips). They do care about the $$ flowing into their pockets. That is for sure.

I, too, walked the beach in the biosphere and, yeah, as beautifuyl as it was there, it was a mess - LOTS of man-made debris. So sad realizing that a lot of that stuff will still be around long after we're all pushing up daiseys. The LGers have done so much good for the local library and other causes, how about adding another cause - picking up litter on the beaches as ya walk along. When we lived in Florida, we always took a few trash bags and didn't go home until we took more trash home with us (for proper disposal) than we came with - every little bit helps. The resort beaches are kept pretty clean, but outside of the resorts and condos where there's no one to clean up, it's a mess.

On another note... texas yankee you are only one post away from earning your LG cooler.
