Please explain more about the red light green light system in the airport. Is it per person or per family??

It's per family. You get up to the "stoplight," and one of you pushes the button. Green light means "go," red light means you get your bags inspected.

We have somehow got a red light the last three years in a row. No big deal though, just takes a few minutes to get your bag looked through

No--it's just when you enter Mexico. U.S. customs just kind of randomly selects people to check. However, when leaving Mexico all luggage is searched by security before you get up to the ticket counter. So it can make for very long lines.

We have been down 8 times and neither one of us has got the red light. Hope it continues in
Oct.

You should have known better than to say that--you've probably jinxed yourself!

A good point to remember is that if you secure your bags with nylon zip ties don't put them on until after your bags are searched.

just a funny to pass along:

First trip to Mexico, (several years ago), and I got the red light. Agent opened my bags and my frilly girl things were on top. He must have been new at his job, he wasn't sure whether he should rifle through with abandon, or tread lightly. I noted his hesitation and thought I'd lend a hand. I dove into the bag and began to show him everything. He took a step backward and the other agents broke into wide-faced grins and chuckles.

I won't be so lucky this go-round. I've abandoned the frilly and pretty, and moved into the functional.

Green Light does not guarantee you won't get searched.

We got the green in March, my wife's backpack got searched anyways. She blamed my long hair

Does it help the search go any faster to pack using ziplock bags? I usually use various sized bags to pack similar items in - t shirts in a bag, swim suits in a bag, etc. Will thgis help or will they just open all my bags?

It probably depends on the customs agent.

If you see 7 8 or 9 people ahead of you get the green light, chances are you're gonna get the red. I predicted my man would get the red. He did..and got searched...lucky for both of us as he packs lighter than me. Next light was green and I was in. I've never seen two reds in a row.
US customs are eyeing you from the minute to step into the terminal back to the US...I have no idea what the criteria is, but once coming back from Cabo, I looked totally haggared and burned out. (mucho fiesta the night before) I knew I was headed for secondary. So now I brush my hair on the plane, put on make up and smile a lot in the terminal coming home. Nothing more demoralizing than someone going through your dirth clothing bag. UGH!
