I'd like to find out how to pronounce some words before saying them wrong becomes imprinted in my brain! (Also want to impress my daughter with my encyclopedic knowledge...takes work). I can guess at words that are spanish but have no clue about the Mayan ones. First off: works that begin with X's? Like Xel-ha and Xcaret? Other words with X's not in the middle? Cenote? Any other words I have not found yet? (just booked this trip 2 days ago!)

Thanks! From Toronto...eh? A favorite city: spent our honeymoon there. In October. (Yes, I know it's odd. We were aiming for Quebec city but the car broke down. Still, loved the place. Have been back several times. ) Our son is going to school in Montreal. I am pretending our upcoming trip to Puerto Aventuras is for our 25th anniversary. This is a spur of the moment trip: teenage daughter begged to go somewhere warm for spring break. I started looking, thinking, I always wanted to go to Yucatan, and before I knew it, it was booked! Now I have less than 2 weeks to cram in all the info I need!

The "x" pronunciation was cleared up by another poster a while back........ In Mayan, such as Uxmal, Xel-Ha, Xcaret, it is pronounced "shh" In Spanish........such as Mexico, x is pronounced like x

In the Yucatan you'll see a lot of Yucatec Maya and a lot of Spanish, and mixing the languages is not uncommon. You might see Pollo Pibil on the the menu. Pollo is Spanish for chicken and Pibil is Maya for baked (specifically in banana leaves). If it was written in Maya it would be (I think) Kaax Pibil. Here is my favorite Yucatec Maya page. The other thing about Maya, at least from my aural observation, and I may be wrong, is that in Maya, syllables are not accented. Chichen is pronounced like two one syllable words Chi and Chen. I had a pronunciation lesson given to me by one of the bike drivers while I was wandering around Coba. When I asked him for directions, I wasn't allowed to proceed on my walk until I could correctly pronounce Nohoch Mul. I was totally fascinated by the fact that Yucatec Maya is so widely spoken on the peninsula. (I love languages, can you tell?)
