Three o’clock in the morning found the Hawk and myself groggily loading our luggage into the car. Can’t remember too much until we arrived in Cancun and began looking for our “Easy-Way” guy….He never showed up. One of the taxi guys called him for us and after about 15minutes he arrived to take us to Easy-Way…..oooppss..no cars left . The Hawk is CRANKY! It was a good thing that Dennis from Easy Way knows how to handle wild creatures like the Hawk! (more on that later) We finally get a VW Pointer and are on our way. No gas, no washer fluid and no automatic transmission. I tell the Hawk, don’t worry, soon we will be on our beautiful adventure to Copal. Long story short, I had given Hawk plane tickets for Valentine’s Day and then realized that we needed to get a place to stay… EASTER WEEK ..Our first choice was Xamach Dans. Unfortunately that week his whole family was coming to Xamach. He did however get us one night down the road from his place.. Kay and Gary had nothing for March. So I got a little place at Zarah in Tulum. Looking forward to this great adventure. Zarah got our reservations messed up, so the night before we left we get a call from Zarah saying that the first 4 days we would be staying at Copal. In a King Garden Cabana. Very Excited, I didn’t know that a Garden Cabana is really a “jungle hut”. Ignorance is good. So, here was our plan..Day 1-2-3 Copal- Clothing optional-WhooHoo…Day 4 Xamach…Day 5-6-7-8 Zarah. Back to the story. We arrive at Copal and the strong Mayan lads took our luggage down the path to the bowels of the jungle where we arrived at Cabana # 44. The Hawk looked deeply into my eyes and gently holding me by the shoulders whispered….lovingly… “You’re F**K-ing kidding me?” I said “no” and opened the hut to discover a hugh king size bed with mosquito netting. Very little room around the bed to move about on the cement floor. Added on to the hut with 3 narrow and steep stairs was a little bathroom. Climbing the stairs ALWAYS resulted in hitting one’s head as this was built with the Mayan in mind. In the middle of the night, I laid awake..totally saturated in sweat..not a whisper of a breeze and realized what a beautifully mystical place we were at. Under the mosquito netting with the candles glowing..very sensual and exotic. I turn towards the Hawk…and yes, he too is awake… This is when he turns to me and says “I have only been here six hours and I just wrote my complete trip report and it’s fricken hilarious!. As the sun rose, we became aware that anyone traveling on the jungle path could look right into our little hut. Window openings were screened, but no coverings. The construction of the stick hut had gaps between each stick. This was the path to the Mayan Spa where every hour the trail would fill with fresh devotees being led to their massage by their chosen masseuse. We were the pre-game entertainment! Today, in order to make a few points with the Hawk, He is scheduled to undergo a deep tissue massage with the handsome and spiritual Favian. While the Hawk heads down the path to his adventure, I head to the beach for my own little adventure. Naked is the word on the beach. So it is a great time “people watching”. After a period of time I decide to get in the ocean. It is pretty rough and windy. I wish I would have put on some water shoes as the beach was very rocky. I didn’t realize how slippery those rocks got until one wave knocked me down and I couldn’t get up. I kept trying to stand and the waves kept knocking me down. I was laughing at my folly as I looked up to an outstretched helping hand. OR WAS IT A HAND?? There was a sweet short fat Rasta man on the Copal beach that makes hats out of palm fronds. He waded out to help me up. Did I mention, he was naked…yup naked. I took this picture of my friend later when he had his speedos on. That night we ventured into Akumal where we had a delightful dinner featuring electricity and running water. . On a side note. Copal was a real good experience. I enjoyed the vibe and I am sure that if we had had ocean front cabanas, as we were promised, things would have been very different. But we didn’t have the ocean front cabana so it was back to the sweat lodge No, that’s the one they charge you for! The sign should have said..”for a reduced Temazcal experience please follow this path to Cabana #44. I think it was the next night that we went to Zarah’s for dinner. Very good food. We were once again enjoying the electricity when out of nowhere..two crazies run up to our table all nervous and giggling. You must be the Hawk and Needa??? That locogringo cooler worked! It was cjanerun and her cutie husband Tim. Oh we had some fun with them. They are truly “locogringos” and have been sworn to secrecrecy concerning anything relating to the Hawk. Hehehe Next day…off to Xamach. As we parked the Pointer next to another Pointer, it looked as if Dan’s place was getting busy. We walked toward the beach and saw two men talking out by the water. One had a very red shirt on. OMG..another Gringo…FullerZoo!! This is his wife Ruth and the Zoo eating the fish that he was cleaning as we walked up. This fish dinner was expertly cooked by Gary the Restaurant Manager and his fine staff! Great experience. Dan was a great host as was Gary , the XamachDos manager. XamachDos has two cabanas for rent. They are very nice. Each has two large beds and a very private patio. The kitchen had it’s grand opening this week and everything is looking good at XamachDos! That evening Dan let the tequila flow freely. The rest of the story is on a need to know basis. We drove to our guest house down the road and the Hawk slept it off. I had the BEST day. Beautiful Lilly and her boy Jorge kept me busy touring their world. And a beautiful world it is. We missed Dan the next morning, but Gary fed us and helped locate the Hawks sandals and glasses and hat! Then we headed home to Zarah. Movin on up..We are now at Zarah and have electricity until 11:00. WhooHoo. The bathroom is about 3 feet x 5 feet. (this includes the shower) Horribly smelly with sewage gas and the shower doesn’t drain. They did have a real nice community bathroom that I opted to use. It didn’t have hot water however. Did I mention that the showers in Tulum are brackish water? Does really interesting things to your hair. BUT: Zarah has two pocket beaches. Directly behind Zarah is Part of the Mayan Spa. The baths. On the cliff. Breathtaking! EASTER SUNDAY! Locogringo.com get together at Casa Cenote Fun Time – Good People! Felt like we had all known each other forever. We all enjoyed the Easter Egg Hunt that FullerZoo and the Ms. Put on. Prizes included a bag of mis-matched sandals from the Sian Kaan shore debris. Tatoos. Underwater Camera. Something else, I forget. We stayed until Casa Cenote ran out of beer and then took Cjanerun –Tim-Mdynes-Brett back to Tulum for refreshments. Good times. For the whole story please visit: http://www.locogringo.com/forums/tm.asp?m=49795 Sleeping at Zarah was OK until the electricity stopped. Spontaneous Human Combustion certainly would have occurred if it hadn’t been for the humidity. Now is the time to talk about mosquitos. Don’t trust those breeze halting nets. I now have about 250 mosquito and other assorted bites. BUT NOT TO WORRY. The next morning, I was to receive a healing massage from Daniel the Mayan Shaman. Whew, this was an experience that I highly recommend. He left no area unmassaged. He even did my internal organs!!. He chanted and prayed and used about 3 to 4 gallons of oil. I was one slippery gal. I slid back to Zarah and realized that there is not enough water pressure in ALL of Tulum to remove 3 to 4 gallons of oil from hair, ears, and other areas. I just let the ocean gradually wear it away. Oh by the way, the Shaman did nothing for the mosquito bites. Nothing outstanding happened the next day. We took our daily trip to the San Francisco for Coronas and Ice. Spent the day lounging by the Ocean. The next morning we packed and headed home via Akumal and then Easy Way then Airport then home. We were in Akumal for about ½ hour when the Hawk told me he was more relaxed at that moment than he had been all week. He said the title of his trip report is “Don’t ever let Needabeach plan your trip to the ROO” I gave him a kiss and got him an ice-cream. Little boys…sheesh Now, to end the saga…EASYWAY….Nice people. They just need more cars. We were totally unaware of all the additional benefits of the EasyWay rental experience. FullerZoo told us to ask to see the Lion!?! So we did and Dennis took us on the jungle tour. There was a male lion ..a female lion . a parrot. Many horses. A rodeo practice in progress , an owl, chickens, dogs (loose and caged) And my favorite. The bull riding practice barrel. Dennis and EasyWay are a full service organization. Before we left, he insisted on taking our picture. If nothing else, he put a smile on our face! Thank you Dennis and EasyWay! Very interesting place. And a very interesting way to end a very interesting trip! We arrived home to Colorado at about 11:00 pm . Had to drive home in a Blizzard. I was freezing.. Boy are we hard to please! Looking forward to our next adventure at the ABR with the All Inclusive…electricity…TV…hot showers. We’re getting too old for this!

Heh heh, now I am sorry, that I didn't talk my friend into going to Xamach's that night of the grand opening. I am sure I would have had much more fun then the hell ride I took on the sea kayak, that day. It sounds like the trip did end up okay. Just really sorry that you guys didn't come and visit us at the Villa. You would have felt relaxed immediately! Oh well, another time, another trip. Thanks for the report. If I was about 20 years younger, I think I would actually like staying in Zarah's. Happy

Needa - I totally loved your trip report - it's a hoot! I think it's a miracle that you and The Hawk are still married. After staying in a little house, without air-conditioning, on The Cayman Islands in July; I was ready to curl up and die. It was supposed to be cooled by ocean breezes, but I never felt any!!! In addition to this; Alberto HATES sleeping under a fan!!! I would have slept out on the beach; but it was a little too spooky! Anyway, glad you had so many wonderful adventures and your pics are wonderful. All I have to say is - I'd let Favian give me a deep tissue massage any time!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great to have both of you back. Rose

Rose, It was kinda like going to a pig roast and you're the pig. I think that's why I have that nice basted look in all those pictures. I guess I now have to tell my side of the story. The Hawk

Needa, I loved your report. Fun, fun, and more fun. You must be a riot to be around. Hopefully we'll meet one day down LocoGringo way. Thanks for sharing all your pics, too. The area looked beautiful, well, except for the hut...I don't think I'm brave enough for that kind of experience. Hope your bites are healing. Muchas gracias, amiga!

How adventurous Needa, sounds like a neat experience that you can NOW look back on and laugh!!! Not sure I could convince my hubby to do it, however the way you just laid it on the Hawk is very cute!! You're pictures are spectacular and I thank you for sharing...I'd love to go down to visit Dan next time, looks awesome there! Perhaps our paths will cross next winter! I'll probably book for our 20th anniversary, around valentines next year.......wadda think live dangerously and go with the "KING GARDEN CABANA!!"....not likely but hmmmm we'll see how he treats me until then! Thanks Needa!

Sounds like you two had a very "earthly" experience. Needa, you and Hawk are troopers! I can't imagine what thoughts were really running through your heads as you gazed upon your cabana for the first time at Copal...most people would have probably not made the best of it the way you and Hawk did. Adventures plus this trip eh? I absolutely loved your trip report and can't wait to hear the other side from The Hawk. You are a great couple and it's no wonder that you claimed you felt all the LGs at the Easter gathering knew each other a long time, cause I feel I know you and Hawk and the others just from cyber-talking on this site. Glad you were able to relax and enjoy all the wonders of the Roo. Next time it should seem like heaven even more so...Thanks for posting your personal pictures and thoughts for us to gush over!! ...Deb

Needa, This is a fantastic trip report. I can tell that you are a good natured person- I think I would have freaked if I arrived at 3am and there was no rental car. Having the capacity to accept what life brings you and being good natured are what makes a trip truly unique and memorable. I loved your off the beaten track trip! "When life gives you lemons- make lemonade" I didn't realize that easyway is actually a trip destination... I hope they have a car for us... if not, maybe they'll let us borrow the horse!

The Hawk's Version in no dicernable order, piece meal, bicoastal & directional and beamed in for your viewing pleasure: I watch Neddabeach shop, buy, plan, pack, organize, check and recheck for a week up to departure. Watch is the key word. For any of you dumb schmucks who don't know how to do this I'll tell you how. For sixteen years you act completely incompetant. Then when anything important must be done your wife will take over and do it for you. Now you bossy pigs who try and do itself, I feel sorry for you. You could be laying back, watching a ball game with a cold brewski while everything is done for you. Now I go to sleep for 3 hours and am ready to get going at 3 in the morning. (Note to Dr.- these drugs Are goooooood). Now we arrive at the airport and go to the parking garage where you need to leave the title of the car as deposit in order to pay your way back out. Who cares? We got Front Row parking. (Front Row is a state of mind-I taught Needa my method and it works for her now also). Frontier flight is great-beers cold and coming often. We breeze through customs (also a state of mind [note to self-must sell courses on TV-call Marco for advance workup]. We hit the curb and no way Easyway. I bribe a cabbie and he makes a call. Easyway arrives in 15 minutes. Pull into Easyway 'car lot'. I mean field with one car sitting there. I had Nissan Tsuru Automatic reserved. Had asked for upgrade. Now I get the B & S. No automatics but a VW Pointer about as big as one of my German Sheppards. The Hawk starts squaking and Danny (nice man) takes me to two other car places just next door. Now it's like looking for a used car. I walked around the lot kicking tires and still ended up with the damn Pointer. I pull the rope to start the engine as Needa tries to remember what a clutch was for. We load up and no sooner pull out before I see No Gas on guage. We do the u-turn into the Pemex and then hit the 307 to Tulum. Now I have a suggestion for the good people of Quintana Roo. Make Drive-In liquor stores all along the 307. For goodness sake you're Mexicans. Haven't you ever been to Texas before? They're everywhere you go!! And you can drink and drive, just like the Roo. 15 years ago in Isle Mujuares we rode a golf cart down the Cerveza Highway. You mean this hasn't hit the mainland yet. I was sure these Drive-Ins would be popular on the 307 by now. Damn inconvient is what I think. We hit the San Fransisco for beer and ice. Now upon entering the San Francisco there are stacks of coolers to the ceiling. It seems like everyone who enters buys one. You know, the cheap styrofoam kind. Well from my many trips afterward to the SF I found that they have a full time employee just replacing foam coolers. Now I become a little concerned. Theres a bunch of drunks out there and we have to somehow get around all of them. It's becoming the Amazing Race and Boston Rob is just ahead of us. Now if you want heilo (yellow will get you ice: heeelo will get you snickers) you must purchase it first before some guy in a uniform takes you outside and unlocks the freezer. Now the ice is melting before it even passes the door and you have a puddle in your trunk like a bad day in Deer Lick before you know it. You rush off to a vision of luxurious digs. The clutch grinding and herking and jerking like Marco after a Damiana & Centario double shot. The topes feel like you ran down the stairs and you thought there was one more step than there really was. You know, your neck snaps a little and your spine cries for Percodans. We finally pull into this lush jungle. You can almost hear Tarzan scratching his ........... Well, Needa mentioned we got the Bait and Switch for Copal. We unload the bags and a nice boy starts dragging them through a jungle. The Hawk's thinking 'this could be cool'. We follow him to Hut 44 and he drops the bags. Now we're in front of a Real Friggen' Hut. I haven't seen these since the documentary on the Bataan death march. It's slats of wood with genenrous distances between them, some palm frongs thrown on top, a door cut out with complete darkness inside. "You got to be fricken kidding me!!" I exclaim in a mild gentlemanly way. I sit down on the "chairs" out front and go through our paperwork. Sure as hell, there it is on the last page, hurriedly entered at the last moment from our e-mails. In bold print. You Are Screwed For the Next Three Days! You Will Then Be Moved To Another Location Where You Will Only Be Screwed Half As Much As You Are Here!!!!! The Hawk

Needabeach and Hawk, Thanks for your lively, humorous account of the trip. We just missed you and the rest of the LG bunch by less than 24 hours, as we were having lunch at Casa Cenote on Saturday. We got lucky, with very few mosquito bites on our entire trip. On that particular day, it's probably because of the gale-strength winds whipping right through the restaurant. All mosquitos in their right minds were clinging on to swaying palm fronds for dear life. We enjoyed our time at Casa Cenotee, and snorkeling Manatee Cenote, but wished we weren't flying out on Easter. What a great group of people, and what a treat to be able to get together for the Easter bash. Both of your "Roo (or is it Rue?) stories are just hilarious, and hopefully you are able to laugh at it yourself, as you check the internet for a place to stay at on your next vacation, that includes walls, and maybe even electricity. Thanks again for a great trip report and for all the photos. Carlota

Great report --it's definitely a keeper! Not only is the report a keeper....Needa & Hawk are keepers~! I loved both of the reports and am amazed by how you roughed it. I don't think I could have done it. I've backpacked in the wilds of Colorado, swum in the remote beaches of Hawaii, dragged my butt across the tameless areas of Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas, but I ain't never done the rough cut like the two of you. Bravo and kudos! I'm making up, and giving out, an award to the two of you. You be the brave winners!

Ohh...it's been a busy little site today. I guess I need to answer some questions. First of all generally speaking: Thank you Julie, Chris, Susanne, CoffeeG Carlota, Deb and SteveP! XamachDan...hey we never finished the negotiations on that picture. Atleast I didn't post the picture of what you did to the Hawk!! HEHE Thanks for the best part of our trip. I wish I was at Xamach the whole time. It was wonderful...where are our hats? Mimnjm: Yes, without the Hawk however......And I would bring a battery operated tent fan...it was a real adventure and I am glad I did it. Happy: The cutie at Xamach's. Yes, and the nicest boys EVER! Rose: What can I say about Favian....I couldn't schedule an appointment with him..I was so in love, I couldn't do it.. He would talk to you and put you in a trace. AMAZING MAN...ALL MEN SHOULD BE LIKE FAVIAN! Sorry Hawk...truth hurts eh? Laz: Thanks for putting a name to my savior. Daniel, also the name of my Mayan Shaman that gave me the healing massage! If I had another child his name would have to be Daniel! Michelle: You want an adventure without the crap..Talk to Dan at Xamach..Beautiful.. Paradise....and Tequilla is included!! Michelle: Yes, Gilligans Island..however we are the old Howels..without the $$ Funny! Marjorie: Good luck with Easy Way, they will find you a car eventually! They do have a lot of horses!
