On the arial map I saw "RIU Palace", is that RIU Palace Riviera Maya or RIU Palace Mexico and where are there in comparison to each other? All the things I've read, people prefer Palace Mexico over Palace RM. If someone has been there are they very fancy vs. say an Iberostar Tucan?

The Riu Palaces are much fancier than the Iberostar Tucan. The Tucan and the Riu Palace are next door to each other. We stayed at the Tucan, beautiful beach and grounds but I didn't care for the sweltering buffets and the uncomfortable rooms. I've never stayed at the Riu's but they get consistently good reviews.

On the aerial map the Riu Palace Riviera Maya is not listed. It is the ""green jungle area" located between the "Viva and "The Reef Playacar" . It's further north towards Playcar than the Riu Palace Mexico. Just opened in Feb of this year.

I've stayed at the Riu Palace Mexico (twice) and the Iberostar Tucan.

If I was going with a family (with children), I'd choose the Tucan. It's more "family oriented" with a great activities staff - always something going on.

But for a couple, the Riu Palace is the place. It's more "upscale" - the people get a bit more dressed-up for supper, the food is better, the atmosphere is more subdued, and while it's not adults only, there aren't many kiddies around (I think they'd be bored silly). Do remember that guests at a Riu Palace can use any of the other Riu facilities in the complex - a nice perk.

The beaches are similar - it's the same beach - but the Riu's area is definitely wider.

Comparing the Riu Palace Mexico versus the RP Riviera Maya: the Riu Palace Mexico is older, somewhat smaller (but not by much), and has a much better beach. The Riu Palace Riviera Maya has a much better pool. I thought it had more of a "sterile" atmosphere, too, but others might not feel that way.

All the places are quite nice...the bottom line is that it depends on what you're looking for in your vacation experience.

We've stayed at the Riu Palace Mexico and loved it. Tequila Tom gave you excellent advice. When we drove by the Riviera Maya this summer, it looked a bit too big and gaudy for my taste. If I had my choice, I'd like to try the Royal Hideaway!

Stayed at all of the ones mentioned.Bar none the Royal Hideaway was the best.It seems that it's all the little things that make the difference and depending on what turns your crank.........the little things are what you pay extra for.Of the two Riu's the older one in our opinion is the more elegant of the two. It's true the pool may be nicer in the newer one but the beach front is way better in the older one.The Royal Hideaway was at a different level all together.Very upscale.
