I haven't heard of this...has anybody else? I looked on my Chichen Itza map from cancunmap.com and I don't see anything. How did you hear about Ixhil?

I have heard of it, it is located near Ixhil on the road from Coba to Chemax......please post a report if you should get there.

I was plotting out a road trip to Coba and noticed a road out of Coba to the southwest that listed Ruins Ixhil. I was hoping someone from Locogringo had been there. From the map I am looking at the road continues beyond the ruins and then turn west about a mile from the ruins, then continue about 10 miles. Prior to reaching the town of Chanchen, the ruins are on the left. It is the 1st time I have seen this site listed. On our last trip someone had told us about a site beyond Coba that had murals. I am wondering if this is what they were talking about

Thanks

Ron

I didn't stop at the ruins but on the same road leading out of the back side of Coba is a small cenote called Koopiox. The have a zip line you can ride down. They hook ropes up to you to control your speed. If the ropes break you don't hve to worry. There is a mattress strapped to the wall below.

I have not been to the ruins at Ixil, but I kind of know where they are. I checked the Institute of National Archeology and History web site and they are not listed. Thus there are no paths or parking or guides for the ruins. I also checked my "Guide to Archeological Sites in Mexico's Yucatan" by Joyce Kelly, Oklahoma University Press, 1992
The site was not listed there either.

Although marked on the road map the site is probably just a lot of stones piled up on each other but there is not any description of what you are looking at. Remember the Yucatan peninsula is littered with thousands of small structures. Ixhil may be a collection of such OR it may be one of the many sites that are waiting for funds for excavation and renovation. I can't tell you what to do but I would recommend if you plan on going to keep your expectations ,ow.

Reviving an old thread -

I too am interested in Ixhil, having seen it on maps near Coba. While searching for information, I found a site at http://www.travel-library.com/tours/north_america/mexico/merida/complete_yucatan_adventure_bicycle_tour_in_mexico.html with a tantalizing reference:

"Leaving Coba, we'll take the back road out, along a newly paved stretch taking us towards Valladolid. Along the way we have the opportunity to visit several cenotes, pass through some small Mayan towns and villages and possibly explore the hidden Mayan ruins and lagoon of Ixhil."

Google Earth shows a small lagoon south of the road at about the right spot. I'm tempted to just go on a whim and see if I can find it. Has anyone gone there since this thread started? Ron, did you make it there?

- Eric

I tried to find the ruins when I was there in October. It was an interesting drive but didn't find any indication of where the ruins were. There were a lot of butterflys along the way and I didn't see another car.
It was a little adventure.

Looking at the road in Google Earth it appears that I ought to be able to identify roughly where the lagoon is, based solely on how the road turns - it's a nice set of straight segments with well-defined corners. I've also got a friend with a GPS who likes adventures like this, so the coordinates from Google Earth, if accurate, can help pinpoint the location. Assuming we're in a likely spot, we then decide whether it looks foolish to walk south for a few hundred meters.

If we do, and find something, I'll let y'all know...

Andrea- Interesting, thanks! What else did you find?
Eric- Good news. When do you go?

(BTW Muyil, in the lower-right of the "maps of Mexico" link, is a little visited but nice ruin)

CurlSnout - we're arriving Feb 14 for an 8 day stay. We're driving to Chichen Itza on day 1, and staying that night at the Mayaland, and then driving to Playa del Carmen, by way of the Coba road. I'm tempted to try to find Ixhil on that run, but I suspect that my wife is uninterested in that level of unplanned mayhem.

I plan to go to Ek Balam on this trip, so maybe Ixhil would be an interesting detour. THere's also a Zona Arqueologica (perhaps X-kinchil) marked just west of there on the road south of Xiulub that also looks interesting. Maybe we'll try a 3-fer...

I also like Muyil, and may return this trip.

Eric- I can see the ruins zone south of Xiulub (X-kinchil?) on a map, but didn't see anything else about it in a quick search..sounds like you're going to have a neat trip. Appreciated your comment on the 'unplanned mayhem' potential! Definitely will have to let us know what you find... you've got my curiosity up!
