Congressman Mark Foley (R-Fl) just resigned after ABC News questioned him about sexually explicit internet messages with current and former congressional pages under the age of 18.

IMO, it's unbelivable for many reasons.

What say you LGer's. Appropriate, inappropriate? What if they were over 18??

FOLEY RESIGNS

On the surface it does appear to be inappropriate. Lets get both sides of the story.

I think the proper term for this is BUSTED!!!

Yet another "family values" person down in disgrace. It would be funny if it wasn't so exploitive of others - in this case: children.

What an idiot........I think anyone entrusted with government service, in any government agency, regardless of party because they both claim "values", that is caught in anything improper, illegal, etc, should face double penalty. Be it fines, time, etc.

Does that mean you believe it, or don't believe it? I read the link on VdP's post. I know how written correspondance can be tweaked in any direction, but Foley asking for the pic gave me "that feeling in my gut." Not sure why he wanted a photo of a young man, other than for the wrong reason.

How incredibly sad for all those who counted on him as a worthy congressman, and expecially sad for his family, who should be the ones he loves and honors the most in the way he acts.

Well on the national news they just said it was with underage BOYS, so, to me, that's just SO wrong on SO many levels.. And pathetic.. someone mentioned that he should do double punishment, but you just KNOW he won't be punished at all - like most politicians and celebs.. On Dateline they nab dudes who set up sexual meetings with underage girls and arrest them.. I somehow doubt this guy will be arrested.. he'll, in fact, probably run for office in another state in a couple of years.. geez..

..and what's with this movie coming out about Bush being shot? I can't stand the guy AT ALL and even I think that's not appropriate.. Of course with my cynical mind, the first thing that comes to my head is that its a plea for everyone to feel sorry for him or something.. Still - not appropriate to act out the current President's shooting by using real footage and faked footage with a guy who looks like him combined.. Sorry for the thread hijack.. Its all political, however..

Sorry....unbelievable in that, if true, what's this world coming to..........It seems like everyday girls/boys go missing, get molested, are hit on by middle aged married men.....(i think he's married)

Ironic how movies like American Pie are all the rage....yet in "real" life, we see lives ruined by such scenarios....ie; christy brinkley and her husband, this congressman's family i would imagine is devastated.....

What am I missing? I saw nothing "sexual" in anything with the "resigns" link. The other link couldn't be displayed.
Soley because the boy was 16 isn't anything. A photo request could be innocent.

If I'm missing something, let me know.

Here's what was contained in the deleted link. Fortunately, my computer stored it in its history:

"As a founder and co-chair of the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus, Mark has been instrumental in the development and passage of legislation designed to protect our children.

He authored legislation that became law -- the Volunteers for Children Act -- that gives volunteer organizations that work with children, such as scouting and sports groups, access to FBI fingerprint-based background checks to ensure that they are not inadvertently hiring child molesters.

He has also cosponsored legislation toughening the penalties levied at those who hurt children and, most recently, has joined forces with the Administration and Congress to fight child predators. His Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act, which has passed both the House and Senate, will overhaul the way we track and monitor predatory pedophiles. He has also introduced and cosponsored legislation designed to eliminate child pornography and exploitive child modeling web sites.

Over the years, Mark also has worked closely with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and John Walsh (host of Fox TV’s America’s Most Wanted) on a variety of child protection programs. Among the latest of these is a program designed to show children how to protect themselves from online predators.

On the education front, Mark strongly believes that our children are the key to the nation’s future. Since he was elected into Congress in 1994, he has been working with both Republicans and Democrats to help reduce children illiteracy and improve educators’ job benefits. He has consistently supported measures that will give all of our young people the opportunity to become educated, successful members of society.

This past year, he voted to increase funding for No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), Head Start and Pell Grant programs. He also supports funding for pre-college opportunity programs like TRIO and GEAR UP and is an advocate for students’ right to have access to a safe and productive learning environment with federally funded programs like Safe and Drug-Free Schools.

Mark is a strong proponent of NCLB’s program called Reading is Fundamental (RIF). This productive program helps educate parents to create a literacy-rich home environment for their children through motivation activities in communities. RIF’s motto to children is that reading is both fun and fundamental. Mark’s district has benefited from RIF’s activities and materials, helping increase FCAT scores and improving schools’ Annual Yearly Progress marks (AYP).

As technology rapidly advances, Mark feels that students should have the ability to integrate the use of computer software into their daily learning regimen. As a strong supporter of NCLB’s Enhancing Education Through Technology program, Florida’s rural and urban schools alike have received technical assistance through the recruitment of highly qualified teachers and state coordinators.

Mark also is a firm believer in finding and supporting innovative ways to encourage our children’s educational horizons, including participating in the annual Congressional Art Competition, a program that reaches out to high school students in Florida and the nation to showcase their creative talents." ////

In addition, here's another link that describes what ABC News found in their investigation, which incidentally, led to Mr. Foley's resignation:

Well, THAT contains nothing wrong or perverted. So far, I've seen nothing for folks to be upset about. So, where's it coming from?

locolon - click on the link the previous poster left. The transcript's on the messgages they printed are bad enough - plus they said there was plenty more to graphic to print. In th eones they did print, him asking an underage boy if he made him horny is pretty sick.. In addition they state he could be prosecuted for the other stuff he posted online that they couldn't reproduce.. Plus a congressman wouldn't resign if he was innocent.. what they printed, in my opinion, was enough. What they didn't print apparently was damning.. if all true - i hope they throw the book at him - especially since he was hypocritically working to prevent the exact same thing he was doing.. Sicko..

GoKat,

Understand the public's right to know..
and make their own decision..

But for our boards, I'd like to suggest
a link to the transcript if possible.

Respectfully,

Heres the liberal pinko take - [dont get too angry with me for the first sentence] sexual relations between consenting adults are private. Sexual relations with significant age and power differences are debatable, Donald Trump seems to get away with the trophy blonde scot free, bubbas bounce with monica seemed to draw a flag, not sure why the difference,[ unless the oval office is an official sex free zone]. Underage relations are always not OK be it male or female as victim. The extra excitement here is that the guy with his hand in the cookie jar is the Family values party poster boy for protecting the little boys, except for the ones he is diddling. Hypocracy detection meter goes off scale on this one. Jail time would be nice but knowing how justice tilts for the rich dignified retirement is lilely. By the way anyone want to bet that he keeps his retirement benefits from congress. They will be a lot nicer than the social security he wanted to privatize.

Holy Cow... I just read a report where the House knew about Foley's "problems" a year ago. I couldn't copy/paste the entire story, but here's enough to give the info - somebody else can find the transcripts if they want - I've read enough of this sick bastard's crap..

"Friday, September 29, 2006 House GOP Leadership knew about Foley almost a year ago, let Foley remain in House leadership, let him remain as chair of House sex offender caucus by John in DC - 9/29/2006 07:06:00 PM UPDATE: Foley's "instant message" communications with yet another underage boy, circa 2003, have now been posted b (17 hours and 36 minutes ago)"

Whoever knew about this should resign..Democrat or Republican.. Hastert claims he "DON'T REMEMBER" being told by Reynolds ..who was told by some representative from Louisianna...If you're not capable of remembering something as important as this.. and not aware that this 'CRETIN" had a alcohol problem for years ..**** are you doing Washington?
Tonite ..Larry King has John Walsh on..this whatever you want to call him is his "friend"..should be interesting.
ps I believe he does not have a alcohol problem.. just no where to run and no where to hide.

Newsie, I wonder about this myself, but does it matter? After all, if it is proven in a court of law that ANY of this took place, he still needs to be held accountable.

Any one knowing about this problem and keeping silent is as guilty as the individual himself/herself. Every adult has a responsibility when it comes to the safety of a child/children.

It always amazes me how everytime the folks in Washington get "caught" doing something the next day they always "check in" to rehab. I think it's because by the time the 30/60/90 day program is up, the scandel is old news and then they get to go about their life.

The Page's parents had no plan of pressing charges--wow! And the media is calling it
"a Congressional equivalent of Katrina." I hear the winds roaring and the waves crashing on the House already....so we'll see how the Reps handle this one. They'd better be ready on all fronts; protecting children and the House and the party from the acts of ONE MAN. Who said our actions only affect ourselves???

Pedohillia no matter what your political affiliation is a crime and needs to be prosecutted. Anyone who aided or abetted or did not report this should also be prosecutted. This should be an absolute zero tolerance situation. Especially because these are political leaders and people in positions of trust.

It disgusts me that he has run to hide in rehab. IF he is an alcoholic that has NOTHING to do with the crime of pedophilia. I will have no respect for any politician of any party who assists in mitigating the enforcement of the laws in this situation.

Sorry - had to get that off my chest.

I don't get why people risk everything in their lives to do this sort of stuff. Not to mention that these are KIDS.

Did anyone see the Oprah episode on Monday (I think) about sex offenders? My husband grew up with Darlene, the lady who was married to the Dallas dentist Todd Calvin arrested for trying to buy Mexican boys for sex. We went to their wedding, my kids played with their kids. She had no idea what he was into. I feel so bad for his little boy and girl. What an idiot.
