If you want a tan to protect you from the sun, then don't get a fake tan from just a bottle. That won't protect you from burning. It's just coloring your skin. Use a tanning bed with or without lotion. I prefer laying down, but lots of people swear by the stand-ups. It's really a personal preference. Best lotions to help you get a tan have tingle. They help the blood flow to your skin and bring in the cells that give you color and protect your skin. If you have oily skin, you may not need lotion, except for regular moisturizer after you shower. If you have dry skin, lotion will help things a lot. The best lotion is the Matahari or California Tan line, but it will cost you. I personally like ones with a little bit of bronzer.

I love Jamaican Red Hemp by Matahari, it's a tingle lotion & it tingles for sure , I forget what the tingle factor# is....but I usually go tanning 2 mths prior to vacation and the entire 3 wks before I leave, I use the Matahari to finalize the tan. It's in the $65 range, but you can find it on the internet for cheaper. Now for the first 3 weeks, I use a simple base lotion, $19-$25 range like Supre(Jam) or Swedish Beauty(Chocolate Silk) brands....now they have better intensifiers that work well in your first 3 wks w/out having to worry about the 'reds' (redlike sunburn that goes away within 10 hrs of tanning). In the midst of all the tanning, once it is developing, I use tons of moisturizer, and have even tried the body washes that you can buy from the tanning salons, most of 'em work well to preserve all the hard work and time it took to get that tan! And they have great clean, crisp smells too....gotta love that. But I really love Matahari's Dark Sexy Legs cuz my legs are so hard to get dark....my tummy tans first, my arms are always super dark....but my legs are stubborn and that stuff works wonders. One thing I've found, is that the bronzers tend to stain clothes. So I don't use them. That's just my personal pref. I sweat when I tan, and the lotion tends to rub off on my clothes, and I get very, very irritated! I love stand up beds.....aaaaaaah they are wondermous. Most of them are the "super bed" type, allowing you minimal time in there, so the standing is only for like 12 min's max.....some salons may have stand up's that are 20 min beds, but not any I've ever been to. But you can tan under your arms, behind your thighs....the stand ups help to even the tan out.....and if in your last couple weeks of tanning, you go to a stand up bed, use a great tingle lotion...your tan will be faboo when you leave......! Hope this helps and isn't 'fake bake' overload!

Do you think the tanning beds tan helps to keep you from getting burned so quickly when you go south and get out into the real sun? or is the tan you get from the tanning beds only tanning to make you look good? I don't know much about tanning beds.

I don't know much about tanning beds. It soooo depends on your skin type. Truly. Some people can go to tanning beds and they still don't tan, they burn. My skin type though, I tan easily and only tend to get red if in the direct sun for hours.....but if I don't tan before I go, being in the sun for hours upon hours, I will get stingy red. Not fun on vacation. *giggle* The tanning allows me to be able to stay in the sun for longer periods, and of course a great tan makes you look thinner and anyone looks better tan in a bathing suit! I'm from Texas, I deal with 'real sun' all day, every day down here.....so tanning in the spring and summer also allows me to be outside at home too....yard work, exercise, swimming........I shouldn't have to go to a tanning salon to get a tan in TX, but it's quicker! hahaaha! You have to be careful with tanning beds, and build up your time spent in them when tanning, to maximize your tanning experience and not burn! Does this help any?

Tanning beds definately will help a person not burn when exposed to excessive sun plus will aid a person to get a deeper tan while in the sun. If you haven't been in the sun for a few months or have not regularly went to tan at a tanning place, just make sure you start out slow. I tan fairly easily once I have a base tan but will burn easily if I haven't been tanning for awhile so I start out with the tanning beds for only 6 minutes the first couple of times then gradually work up to 10 min. I made the mistake 2 years ago of not tanning before leaving for our honeymoon to Puerto Vallarta. I paid the price burning in places you can't imagine...... like the ears and the top of my feet, my scalp (I wear my hair very short), plus burning everywhere else. All unecessory and will not let that happen again. We leave in 4 days for the Roo (staying at CMT) and I started tanning a week ago today and have a great tan going already. Shell

Thanks Sandy76 and u/d for all that info. I have a very fair complexion and burn easily (also dry skin). I don't have milk white skin, but I am fair and I burn. After being out in the sun for an hour, I definitely have to wear a shirt or tshirt or I'm in trouble. I always go protected: sunglasses, hat, long-sleeve shirt & t-shirt, and sunscreen (& I use it) & water. And, I stand in the shade when I get the chance when we go on tours. I'll check around at some of the spas in Toronto and see if I can find one that I can get a couple of sessions at and see if I can get a little bit of a tan before we go (after all I do have 27 days...). I'm sure there will be some places available where I can try to do that. I just have to look for one. - Oh, and, Sandy76, I could certainly stand to "look thinner" (the diet isn't working fast enough!!!).

Wow! Coralreef! That's excellent. That's encouraging to hear. I'll look for a place tomorrow when I go to work. Maybe I can find a place I can slip out to during my lunch hour...

Well, I just signed up at a place about 10 minutes away from my house... They have stand up beds, and it's $1.45 per minute. Or you can purchase a "package" that's 75 minutes for $53 - which comes out to about 66 cents a minute... so I'm going for that. She said she recommends going every other day for 5-6 minutes to start, not daily, and to use lotion that she will show me when I get there. I'm going in 1/2 hour so have to post and get in the shower and get in the car.... I'll post after I'm back home and let y'all know how it went.

That is awesome Teritwocats!! If you take it slow and work your way up like you plan you will not be sorry. Some tanning places really push the lotion thing (because that makes them money when you buy their lotion). I personally do not use lotion because of the fact it didn't make a difference on me when using or not using it. Plus I don't like the feel of it on my skin afterwards. Though I do apply moisturizing lotion that I use everyday when needed for dry skin. They also should tell you at the tanning place to not shower or bathe for at least 3 hours after your tanning session. So you might want to keep that in mind also. HAVE FUN!!!

What about cheap, pasty white people that don't want to spend $$$ to pre-tan. Is there any hope for us, or are we just throwing ourselves on the barbie? I am thinking that I will wear a shirt most of the time and try to keep the sun block on. The only bad thing is that even the "waterproof" sunblocks do not seem to work very well in the water. I have been snorkeling one other time, and I got badly burnt on my back and the backs of my legs. Should I plan to snorkle in a shirt also? I had a friend that just came back and he said that he did a really good job of keeping the sun block on, but his lips got very badly burnt because he did not put anything on them. Said that it was really painful. Anyone got any hints to keep us within a few shades of pasty during our trip?

I am one ot those "Lucky" ones who was born with blonde hair, blue eyes, fair skin and freckles! As an adult I developed Rosacea. My Dermatologist would prefer I wear a space suit in the summer and avoid any amount of sun. When I go to a tropical place I will tan for about a month prior to leaving and then I wear 45+ sunscreen. For those of you who are pale and what that summer glow, I have been using Avon's self tanning lotion for the last three years. It is awesome! It goes on so evenly and looks very natural. I get a lot of compliments. I use the "Light/Medium". They also have "Medium/Dark" and some specifically for the face. It should be coming out soon and is usually on special for $7 or $8 a bottle.

ORIGINAL: BrrrInMN Thanks for the info - what is a rashguard shirt? Anyone know where to get eco friendly sunblock? Is it something that we can get in the Roo? <snip> I don't know where you can get the eco friendly sunblock EXCEPT in the ROO. We bought it at the dive shop in Akumal. (Also found it in the convenience store at ABR.) I am like most of the rest of you (would prefer to get it cheap here at home), but, if I have to wait and get it there and pay twice as much, that's just fine with me. It's one of those things that's a necessary thing to buy both for me and for the ocean creaturesso I don't mind paying more and buying it there.

You can get the eco-friendly sunblock at Wholefoods. quote:

ORIGINAL: maplesyrup Brrr, Always wear a light colored shirt or a rashguard shirt when snorkeling; the sun will fry your back and spoil the fun times you could be having. Do slather on the high spf block to the backs of your legs often. Try to get a eco friendly (biodegradble/oil free) sunblock for snorkeling as it's safer for the sea creatures Ooops, off topic.....my Sweety and I started fake baking this past week. Gonna try some Hawiian Tropics fake bake enhancing lotion from Wally World...let ya know how it goes, although I generally tan easily. The salon near us is small; only one booth, but the owner schedules a half hour per client, so there's plenty of time to put on lotion before stepping in...fake or not, those rays on these Winter weary bones is a little bit of Paradise! maplesyrup, Thanks for the info - what is a rashguard shirt? Anyone know where to get eco friendly sunblock? Is it something that we can get in the Roo? BTW, maple, from your picture it looks like you have had waaaaayy too much sun.
