how long driving from Punta Allen to Playa del Carmen? - 1/27/2005 8:00:53 PM

Hi guys,
How long would you say the drive is from Punta Allen to Playa del Carmen and THEN on top of that, to get the boat to Cozumel.
Is that too long of a trip for a day (if I have my mother with me who is in her 70s) and do recommend we stop in P del C for the night first or somewhere along the route before P del C to break it up?
Lastly, Do you know how late into the evening the ferries run to Cozumel?

Gee I wish we were going when you were going. I am trying to convince my mom, 82, to go with us again this year. She thinks she is too old. She went when she was 75 & 76 and had a fabulous time. She was also the toast of our group and the town. We did have to limit her margaritas, however! She snorkeled 1st locals referred to Mom as " Mama Coca-Cola". She wore a classic 1960's red and white coca-cola a-go-go hat so we could find her in a crowd in case she wandered off!. We should sell it on Ebay!

It really depends on the weather and the car. On a dry day, we took 2 1/2 hours to get from the biosphere entrance to Rancho Sol Caribe and we were still 8 miles north of Punta Allen. The ferries run pretty late and it's not a terribly long ride. Here's a link to the ferry schedule:

Well, you have to get to Punta Allen first. Right now, I would have to say the drive to Punta Allen from Tulum is between 3 and 3-1/2hours. You can make the trip to Tulum from Playa in about an hour. The last ferry to Cozumel is at 11:00 pm.

Last weekend I took a drive from Paamul to Punta Allen and back. It was a day long adventure. The return trip from Punta Allen to Paamul, [which is about midway between Akumal and PDC], without stopping and driving just under the speed limit along 306, took 3 hours. Over 2 hours was spent on the bone jarring ride from Punta Allen back to the paved road.
I wouldn't count on a RT drive and Cozumel in the same day.
Driving back to Punta Allen in the dark would not be something even a Locogringo-super member should consider.
Getting an early morning start, taking the ferry to Cozumel and spending the night there would be a good option. But if you really want to spend time in both PDC and Cozumel, I’d consider a night in each place. A few hours wouldn’t do justice to either.
Average time PA to PDC, figure 3 1/2 to 4 hours.

Sorry to not have specified but we'll have been in Punta Allen for a few days at that point. We'll drive there after a few nights in Tulum. I know it is 2 hours approx from Tulum. What I didn't know is what the total will be on the day we head from Punta Allen to Cozumel.....but looks like you've answered it.

Perhaps it's your accent that’s thrown us off track. The drive from PA to PDC, then on to Cozumel shouldn’t be a problem. 4 to 5 hours including bathroom/refreshment breaks should get you to PDC

My British cousin lives on Cozumel and I have not seen her for 10 years since I was last down there and thus we are for sure going to Cozumel as we'll stay with her & her Mexican hubby and it'll be quite nice to stay, and go around, with locals. I loved it last time I was there. It sounds Cozumel doesn't do much for you. My experience was very positive there and so I guess what made the difference was staying with locals and meeting all their friends and having that insider experience.
