In my research of a family friendly AI for teens and adults I've come across one discouraging issue: getting ill--- either from food poisoning or from "gut bugs" in the water or food.

I don't think that I've read of any cases on here, but, on TripAdvisor and Debbie's Caribbean Resort Review there seems to be a distinct minority of bad experiences because of illness.

I wonder if ANY resort anywhere would have a minority of such reports. However, I'll be sinking a lot of money and my family's health into this trip and it's a little disconcerting to read about "Vacations from Hell."

Am I just being a worry wort?

My experience has been that eating at a restaurant in my home town is more likely to give me the heebie-jeebies than eating at a restaurant on the Mayan Riviera.

Too much travel, too little sleep, different diet, little microorganisms we aren't used to. It can happen. Bring some pepto pills and imodium. Drink the bottled water. Use the lime wedge that is offered. (It actually helps the tummy.

Hey Billdawg,
A few years past it seemed to be an issue. But with the concern of giardia at the resorts and local restaurants in recent years it doesn't seem to be that much of a problem. My wife is really prone to this, having contracted a bad case in Belize a few years back. She hasn't had any problems last 6- 7 visits.

we have only travelled on the AI plan.
We never got sick but my wife had problems adapting to some different foods.
Once you get use to everything you will be fine.
Make sure to take pepto bismal and immodium and some gravol and you will have a great time.

We`ve stayed at 2 AI resorts in Mexico, and eaten out in local restaurants and have had no serious problems. We heard that most people get a bout of Montezumas in Mexico due to over indulging in all of the exotic fruits and salads on offer - so take it easy with the mangos at first and you should be OK.
Some of the local restaurants state on the menu that they wash all their fruit and veg in purified water, so keep an eye out for that.

Have a great trip

I had a local Cancun Doctor tell me that most people get sick once, usually the first or second time down. Then they seem to build up an immunity to the local bacteria. People traveling in the summer months seem to get it worse than the rest. I guess it's a combination of the heat and humidity, and not keeping up with the fluids. Most of the resorts have a Dr. on call and he can treat with anti-biotics that will make you feel a whole lot beter in one day.

I have never been sick in Mexico, and eat almost everything and anything, some in moderation, and have gotten away with it so far. But I always watch the drinking -- not too much alcohol, at least not more than at home, and the fruit. Fruits are soft foods, and unless you eat a lot of them at home, they might have an incidence on you. Sounds counter-intuitive, but it is true.
Most discomfort is due to a different diet, different bacterias, and overindulgence. Nothing much you can do with the first 2, unfortunately. For those of us fortunate to spend more than a week at a time in Mexico, I have noticed and this was confirmed by others, that we always get queasy for a couple of days after that first week. Nothing serious, just queasiness. I just watch it then, eat and drink in moderation, and am ready to go for the rest of my stay.

But when in doubt, always stick to hot food, no eggs, or egg-based sauces (mayo or dressings), no fresh milk or cream products, fruit you peel yourself, and soft drinks/water from a bottle. Brush your teeth with bottled water as well. Ice cubes are fine. All of this is pure precaution, a tad paranoid, but should keep you in good shape -- should being the key word. No guarantee implied. I have seen people eat the same resort or restaurant things I have and be sick as dogs while I was fine. The gist of it is, exercise moderate caution, eat and drink reasonably, keep hydrated with stuff other than beer, and you should be fine.
OK

We too have been fine on all our trips to Akumal. The water is the main problem, but if you use only bottled water you will be fine. We have eaten many new fruits, veggies and Mexican dishes without any problems.

I find yogurt for breakfast each day also helps to build up resistence to bugs.

My never fail program is: take 2 Pepto Bismol tablets a day, 3 days before you travel. Then take 2-4 tabs a day while in country.
Only time I have ever been sick was when I didn't stick to this plan and it was in the big city of Acapulco so thought I would be fine.
Just to be safe I always travel with Cipro. You can pick it up over the counter at any farmicia in Mexico, or just tell your doctor where you will be going and he/she can give you a prescription!
Enjoy it All!

If we feel the revenge is creeping up on us we've used this cure.
The juice from 2 limes
and a pinch of salt...mix and drink.
If it you don't get relief the first time do it a second time.
We heard rather than coating the stomach with a temorary fix like pepto that this remedy actually kills the bacteria.....seems to work for us.

What Kay? You don't like our overprocessed chlorinated swill up here? I always come back from mx. and immediately can smell the chlorine etc. in our water supply.

Thanks to all that replied--- especially for the eating/drinking tips and the self-medication plans.

Just one question: what's giardia?

When you feel slightly nauseated and your belly bloats out and you feel on the verge of a big faahhht it is COMING. Grab bottles of water and run to your room to wait out the hours of peristaltic convulsions. I spent my anniversary in our beautiful stone-tiled, jet-tub bathroom washing my insides. The next evening I was pretty much back to normal but ate very lightly and warily until home again.

ALWAYS DRINK BOTTLED WATER (outside the AI's) is a good safe rule. Even inside the AI's drinking bottled water is a good rule.

Stayed at an AI twice. Stayed in a Cabana down in Tulum once. Ate food in Tulum with no problem. Bought some tacos from a street vendor in Tulum (loved em) and had no problem. Ate at one of those Openair Grilled Chicken places in Tulum and had no problem. Ate at Zamas, no problem. Ate at the restaurant at Copal and had no problem.

Like OK said be sure to use bottled water when you brush your teeth. That was also one of the tips our friends gave us before our first trip to Mexico. Most we've ever had as far as Montezuma's Revenge was being "a little more regular than usual", sometimes not a bad thing if you've been eating more than your use to.

I got to step up to the plate a little here. I am a water plant operator, and thanks to living in the beautiful pacific NW with pristine waters to start with, our water is top notch. As far as that chlorine smell and taste goes, I dont like it either. Chlorinated water is the best invention, that has saved more lives than any other medical invention since its creation. I dont want to get into this water issue to deep(no pun intended) , but as the one who everybody complains too about it, I hope they come up with something better soon!!!

I got the official "revenge" in Zijuantaneo (Ixtapa) years ago. Not only do you get the runs but also fever etc. It lasted about 7-10 days. I do not recommend it! I traced it back to perhaps eating a freshly washed lettuce salad at a restaraunt in town. Zijuantaneo/Xtapa catered more to Mexicans from Mexico City rather than to others back then.

The official revenge is not from to much alcohol, food, or late nights. It's from unaccustomed bacteria in the guts! It takes a couple of days from exposure to explosion. Unlike the "quesy stomach" it will not go away with lime juice or pepto. I had convinced myself that I would never get it after numberous trips to Mexico. One bout will cause you to avoid it like the plague!! Don't get reckless!!

In the five times I've been to Akumal, the only time I got queesy was the year when I decided to forego the Coronas and start drinking bourbon & 7's. I gotta believe it came from the ice in the drinks. I work in the ozone industry, ozone being a gas that kills bad stuff in water. According to one of our engineers that was responsible in the developmental stage of an ozone generator that would work in cleaning the water in an ice machine, you wouldn't want to see how the typical commercial ice-making machine is maintained. Pretty darned icky as far as cleanliness goes, and that's in the States, so I can only imagine what little buggies are in the machines in Akumal. I would for sure stick to bottled EVERYTHING and not take any chances.

Bill Dawg - I've traveled a great deal in Mexico, including towns close to the U.S./Mexican border and I've always applied one rule that has prevented me from EVER getting Montezumas Revenge. I always drink bottled water AND use it to brush my teeth with. I've never had a problem in nicer establishments with ice in drinks, but I am careful with salads and generally avoid them unless I am dining at a nicer restaurant. And even then, I ask about preparation. Just the simple water rule has saved me though...And I'm talking TJ, Rosarito, Ensenada (all our CA easy-access border towns...and we're not talking high-end), as well as the nicer resorts such as Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, and Q. Roo and have NEVER gotten sick.
