Does anyone know what times these stores close on Saturday night? I am trying to figure out if we have time to go to our rental first, but don't want to find all stores closed.

Chedraui is open 7 am to 10 pm everyday. They do not sell alcohol on Sunday so you may want to stock up. There is some more info here. http://www.locogringo.com/forums/tm.asp?m=49025&mpage

Last time we were there, Sam's was open only until 9:00. That's what they have on their web page also, link below. Sam's in Playa

Unless it is a Holiday or an election day, Chedraui and Sam's will sell alcohol on Sundays until 2 in the afternoon. OK

ooooh, waiting to hear what kind of wal*mart it is...... It seems that the new Walmart Superstore in PDC is a BIG deal. It is located at 30th Ave and 8th Street and is open late, until Midnight or 1 AM, depending on which sign is true. It has both food and other goods. Pictures are posted here. http://www.playa.info/playa-del-carmen-forum/276709-post32.html OK, thanks for the clarification on the alcohol. That is very important to keep accurate.

I am a big fan of Cheds. I normally would have turned my nose up at the thought of shopping at Walmart in Mexico; but we bought food there in Puerto Vallarta and it was really good - an amazing selection of fresh foods.

This may show my ignorance, but is PDC, Playa Del Carmen?

If you shop at Chedraui's be especially cautious with items in your automobile. They provide no security in their parking lot and according to the Playa Federales Policia a gang of thieves is working the lot looking for gringos who leave items in their car. The trick is to use a spark plug and hammer to bust out a window and rip off the items locked inside the car. The crime problem in Playa is out of control according to the authorities. While I was returning a rental car at the airport in Cancun, the agent was talking to a customer who had his rental car stolen. The agent told him to just bring the key back to Cancun and they'd reimburse him for the taxi ride. They are particularly concerned about the crime in Playa but alas, helpless in getting control of the situation.

Two items to add here. The first is that I have heard nothing about a crime wave here in Playa. We got here on Monday, have been speaking to all of our friends here and no one has said anything even remotely like that. Cars get stolen all over the world. Everyone is suffering from hurricane related unemployment. Anyone who really wants to work is in Cancun. Second is that I went to WalMart yesterday, much against hubby's better judgement. He just retired on Sunday after 34 years on a union job, so he hates WalMart and everything they stand for. But I had to see for myself, especially since I have neer been in a Walmart (we won't let them into NYC). It's a nightmare. Huge, packed with everything you would find at Chedraui but much, much more of it. I actually bought a container of Florida orange juice, and I am ashamed. Fruit and veg were not as good as the little market near the house. Butcher was American style, you could get anything you want, and the fish looked fresh too. My friend Angeles said the lines can be so long at the checkout, once she just left a full cart. They are open very late, 7am - 1am, and I think that was Saturday as well. There were lots of happy tourists, and even more happy Mexicans there. I am a big believer in give the people what they want, so who am I to judge. Next up is a Plaza de las Americas in the Ejido, should be breaking ground this year for a Sears and a Liverpool. Ain't no stoppin them now.

Since most Mexicans have Sunday off, the stores are a mad house on Saturday night. Long lines and crowded. Try to go another time.

We stood in line (on payday) at the Chedruai in Cozumel last March for about 45 minutes. We went past the time that they stop selling alcohol so the twelve pack I was holding got left at the cashier. Seems like it was 9:00PM or 9:40PM when they stop alcohol sales. Anyone know the normal bi-weekly pay schedule? It may be the 1st and 15th of each month. Go early on those days and be patient. We bought a young pregnant couple some baby things while standing in line. It was fun, warm and fuzzy. Marco Antonio

Chedraui (and Sam's) both sell alcohol on Sundays, before 2pm, unless it is an election day or a National Holiday. OK

Would you like an official copy of the police report? Of course what you say is true; crime is everywhere. Nonetheless, my message urged caution nothing else. Although having said that, PDC is not on my list of vacation sites. I'd much prefer something further south; closer to Tulum.

We were at the Walmart just last week also. Frankly, I prefer Chederaui on any day. The Walmart was not stocked well (I was looking for Milk), the alcohol aisle was only half full - the meat section reeked of bad items... we left there and went to Chederaui - such a huge difference. It is clean, all items looked plentiful, but the best part was fresh bakery items and great produce. There is also the St Francis Assissi (sp?) but we did not make it over there to check it out.
