Part 4

Saturday morning, tonight’s the locogringo party, we got up early to watch the Akumal sunrise. As we were taking in the beauty we heard a voice behind us, Whale was on the Lol Ha balcony taking photos. Everywhere we go, there he is.

Back to the room to lie around for while before hitting the beach. I have decided to snorkel today, I will not be scared of sharks… I will not be scared of quicksand, big fish rays or other giant creatures of the sea.

I will not be a wuss.

Swimming out to the reef the water was still quite cloudy but I had hopes of spotting my first turtle of the trip. Gokatgo was about twenty feet away from me when I saw a beast on the ocean floor, a huge spotted ray, I stuck my head up and yelled …RAY …RAY… RAY. My husband heard me and swam towards me when he saw the Ray it was swimming, towards the surface, towards…ME!!!. His first thought was, Uh Oh, he’s headed straight for Barb then he heard me SCREAM. The ray swam right under me, and he was so close I could have touched him but that was the last thing I was going to do. Instead I freaked out and started screaming through my snorkel. Gokat was even impressed how loud I could scream through that thing. I swam back to shore so fast I left a wake. Then when I got into shallow water I did my scared dance, which is basically me jumping up and down squealing.

GoKatgo finally got back to shore about thirty minutes later and off to the Loncheria for lunch. Walking back to the room, we saw that a local artist was set up selling these cool paintings, so I had to buy one. It is the moon rising over the beach and ocean and I love it.

We spent the rest of the afternoon on the beach. Fairly uneventful until a couple of women showed up, took off their tops and prepared to tan. By preparing I mean smearing tanning oil all over their chests. I glance over at the hubby, and he is just staring slack jawed and pretending to read his book. I mean they are right next to us almost naked and they were attractive. They stayed for about an hour, as they were leaving my husband said he didn’t know whether to stand up and clap or throw money. Dumb guy.

We walked down the beach in front of the Abr and noticed water bubbling up near the shore. It was like a spring bubbling up in the shallow surf. Water was coming up through this hole in the sand in the ocean, bizarre. Gokat went over to explore, but couldn’t figure out what it was either.

We walked all the way to the south end of Akumal Bay and napped in the sand with no one in sight. On the way back we spotted a waterspout off shore. I was a little nervous, in Kansas we head to the basement if we see a tornado, but in Akumal nobody seemed concerned. We wanted to get a picture but before we could get to the room it had disappeared. I later read in the Sac Be that waterspouts were common and generally dangerous only to small boats at sea.

After all the excitement, it was time to get ready for the 11/12 LBV locogringo party.

We were among the first to arrive at ABR and man was it windy. So we grabbed a swing at the bar and kind of looked around like we might recognize people we’ve never met. Then we hear a girl walking around, asking random people are you Loco gringos?? One smart ass tells her he’s loco and he’s a gringo does that count?? She tells him no and declines his offer to sit with him, when I pipe up I am locogringo who are you?? It’s Lorelie. She quickly comes over and introduces us to her friend Stephanie, and then Gextyr and his wife Beth. We meet a bunch of LG’s but no one has seen Kay or Gary or Whale and where the heck is Greek beach girl for that matter??

As the evening wore on the wind kept picking up, it’s hard to complain about wind 2 ½ weeks after a hurricane, but it was insane. Me, not listening to my husband about how windy it can get at LBV, decided to wear a flared mini skirt to the party. BAD IDEA. I thought about wearing my swimsuit bottoms under, but instead wore a thong. REALLY BAD IDEA. Eventually Kay and Gary along with Whale and his wife showed up. Greekbeachgirl and Shane were some of the last to arrive, I think her trip report said she had a hard time getting a cab. Kay and Gary both seemed to be feeling pretty good, no really good when they arrived. I guess they had already been to one cocktail party. You may have heard there was a wedding at LBV that night, the wedding party had hired a DJ and by the time he started with the tunes the party was in full effect.

We had drinks, we had music and dancing, I had my skirt blowing all over the place and I’m trying to keep it down. Problem is, the more I drink, the less concerned I am about my skirt. I should have known dancing on a table was a bad idea, all I know is my skirt was still flying and flash bulbs were popping. By then I’m only half trying to conceal myself, but I am a little drunk, and it is pretty dark, so I just keep my fingers crossed that not many people see my ass. So after the dancing on the tables we move the party back onto the sand, and just tear it up. EVERYBODY is having a good time.

I have lost count of how many margaritas I drank but it was a lot, because I had to pee about every five minutes. So I am going to the bathroom frequently and on the roof, working, are four locals. Repairing the faux palapa with the aid of spotlights. On about my 4th trip to the bathroom I notice there are only 3 guys on the roof. Hmm…. One must be on break. So round the corner I go and there is one of the roofers, making out like a demon with this very drunk and half naked woman from the bar (not an LG). FYI by half naked I mean topless. They are in the bathroom doorway. I didn’t really know what to do cause I really had to pee so I just kind of squeezed by and said excuse me. The she says SSSHOOKAY HONEY YOU CAN GO TO DA BAAFROOM. So I’m laughing to myself while I pee and as soon as get back to the bar I grab Gextyr’s wife Beth, greekbeachgirl and a couple of other ladies and drag them to the “BAAFROOM”. . But I don’t have to go says Beth, um yes you do. Greekbeachgirl probably laughed harder than I’ve ever seen a human being laugh, she was literally rolling around in the sand (RASLMAO?) In retrospect I feel a little guilty for laughing at this woman but OMG.

By this time it feels like the middle of the night but in reality it’s like 8:00. But I’m drunk, I’m in Mexico, and wait a minute…. Kay is…. POLE DANCING. WEEEEEEEE that looks like fun, hey I’ve always wanted to try it, just never had access to a pole. So I decide to take a whirl or three around the bamboo pole myself. Oh yeah this is fun, now I see. By then I don’t even care that I am wearing a flared mini skirt, I just want to dance around this pole. So I took a running start and jumped on it, hung upside down and slid down. My hubby was quite impressed. Who knew I had such a talent??? I didn’t even know. Of course everyone thinks I am a hoot or crazy, but either way the cameras are a flashing. Or was that me mooning everyone????

Lesson to all you girls out there NO skirts when windy and drunk. Wind+ Skirt+Tequila= lots of laughs. The drunken lady from the BAAFROOM appears and she’s wanting to dance but keeps falling down. It’s about 8:30 when the DJ stops playing and the crowd starts to thin out.

I think Gary was starting to realize he ought to get his wife home so they left, but ten minutes later Kay snuck back. YAY!!!

Finally around 10 we head back to our room. Whoops we forgot to eat dinner, and instead drank it. And everyone knows that in Akumal everything is closed at that time of night. But I am starving so I scrounge through the room. Jackpot, my airline snack. So I feast on raisins, one oreo cookie, and some crackers with cheese spread. I also had a coke in the fridge and I found a granola bar that I had brought along. Oh well it will do. I go to offer Gokatgo some of my snack, but he is already asleep with his clothes on. It is 10:30.

My husband was walking into to snorkel at the south end of the bay when his foot sunk in about 10 inches and slammed into a rock. The arch of his foot was sore for the rest of the trip. He said it wasn't really quicksand just loose watery sand. Whale thought it had something to do with the rain from wilma filling the ground water and creating little springs along the shore where the water was escaping.

That also would explain the bubbling we saw in front of ABR.

So, maxi--how did you feel the next morning???? (and for next time--spotted eagle rays are harmless, and absolutely beautiful to see.)

maxiblnd you had me laughing, and I had to read the part about the toples tanning ladies to my husband-too funny!
great job on your trip report, that is nice that you got to meet Kay, I sure hope I do as well in January.
Have hubby install a pole at home so you can practice for your next trip...

Hey maxi..we did have a blast that night didn't we!!!
the "lady" in the BAAAFROOM was too funny ..or was the poledancing the funniest??
I recall meeting up with you at the loncheria next day,and you were wondering where your thigh bruises had come from....
hmmmmmmmmmm...

i'm trying to post a little video of the bubbly water thingy[my hubby stepped into as well !!]
this was deeper than gokat's as dave disappeared to his "upper thigh region" but then Gokat is somewhat taller..
this was right in front of the Italian ala carte..
GREAT Report Maxi...keep it coming !!!!

Hi GBG!! Yes we did have a good time did'nt we??? I knew I was going to have to get my party on, because we wont be back till Spring oh 2007

Yes I believe that was the same water thing we saw in front of Abr, but he did'nt sink in that one.

Wanwell I felt great the next day, since I drank a bunch of water and ate that snack right before bed, I was a trooper. My legs on the other hand were killing me. Pole dancing is a hard job, and Bamboo leaves some nasty bruises. So when I ran into GBG the next day, and we were talking about the party , she pointed out that the bruises on my legs were probably from that darn pole.
Oh the wounds of war.
And yes that picture of the ray is exactly what I saw, I was scared just looking at it on the screen.

Well s##t it looks like bamboo in the picture. I dont really know what it looks like. But your right with my running start jumping on that I would have broken bamboo.

JB you need to start hanging with the right people. If your lucky you will run into one of "locos " soon
And Mags hubby wasnt laughing too hard at me, he was in awe, to see me so scared of something, and a harmless ray at that!!!!
And everyone else I am glad you are enjoying the report. Wait till we go to Vegas next year, and show pictures of that. That is when I really let my hair down!!

Maxiblnd, That was awesome. LOL that woman was awesome. *snicker* But it was I that heard her yelling when she went inside the stall with the roofer. "Noooo, He'll find me!!"
LOL and i think the equation should be edited to include "pole".

Wind+ Skirt+Tequila+Pole= lots of laughs.

Good report and it was so nice meeting you all again. We have to some how find away to get you all back there sooner.

As soon as we can save up money. We were hopeing for sometime in 2006 maybe spring, but I doubt that soon. We'll just have to wait and see. I miss it too. It makes me craky to be in a land locked state. Stupid mountains and snow... Yeah, I guess what happens in Akumal didn't really stay there. The digital cameras see all...
