We had the best margaritas at the Red Cabbage in Puerto Vallarta: the juice of 1 limon (or key lime) 1 shot Don Julio Reposado 1 shot orange liqueur pour over ice & stir.......Salud!!! Premium 100% blue agave tequilas recommended: Don Julio Reposado (the best) Cazadores Reposado Herradura Reposado (this was very good) El Jimador Reposado Hornitos Reposado Sauza Conmemorativo Anejo

You know, I think it is one of these drinks or recipes that almost always taste better "on location". This said, I believe two things are important: the limes must be fresh, and freshly squeezed. The older they get, the more bitter they can get too. And then, while lots of people use plain triple sec, Cointreau (or the Mexican ersatz Controy) gives it that slight orange peel taste and a bit of sweetness. My proportions are 2/5 lime juice, 1/5 Cointreau and 2/5 Tequila (and a dash of bar syrup for good measure). Have fun. OK

OK.........I totally agree with you that sometimes "the moment" enhances the experience. It might just be me, but after imbibing margaritas for 12 days at different locations (and had fun doing so), these were really great margaritas. Of course premium tequila makes a huge difference and I can't stand a "mix" anymore. I'm not sure how much "the juice of one lime" is but it's good to know that a fresh lime makes a better drink........common sense, of course. I'm always on a quest for the ultimate, great margarita, and like Maxi, would love to make my own!!! Lynne

I don't know if you can find those in your neck of the woods, but key limes are great. Very juicy, and sweeter than most limes I have found. Have fun, and let us know how it turns out. OK

beachbum: Add a splash of Grand Marnier. It too will sweeten and add a citrus flavor. Billiam.

Poor Beachbum. With all those splashes we recommend, he probably needs a bigger pitcher. Maybe a bucket with a couple of straws. OK

The booze is important, as mentioned above. The lime is equally, perhaps more, important. The Persian lime can be almost as large as a tennis ball. It is dark green, with bumpy skin. It is good for some things, but not for a margarita, unless you like it bitter. 10 years ago, it was the only kind of lime to be found in my neighborhood. They are still sold in some markets at some times. They are to be avoided by the margarita artiste. You need the Mexican lime. It is smaller, lighter green with a yellow blush, and smooth skinned. A fresh Mexican lime is nearly as sweet as an orange. As OK says, the Key Lime is quite tasty. It's even smaller than the Mexican lime, though, so it's a lot of work squeezing enough of those tiny little jewels to get the juice you need, especially if you're making a pitcher-full. For what it's worth, here's my opinion about tequila and margaritas. Don Julio, and similar fine tequilas, are meant to be sipped straight-up. Ordinary Jose Cuervo should be treated as Chevy Chase treated it in Caddyshack. The best tequila for a margarita is a resposada costing approximately $25 USD in the U.S. I like Sauza Hornidos, which is peppy yet smooth and doesn't give you much of a hangover. There are other excellent choices in that price range. Try a few and have fun painting the perfect margarita.

Margarooski: squirts of lime juice, lemon juice, dollop of triple sec, two dollops of tequila and a dollop or two of vodka.

Have you guys tried "italian" margaritas where you substitute Amaretto for the Cointreau? Very good!

Somewhat OT but there is a place on Forrest drive in Annapolis Md that makes the best margaritas ever. I don't know the name of the place (it might not have one) It is just known as "That place in Annapolis with the margaritas". It is a tiny little dump of place with maybe 20 seats inside and 10 outside, but it is packed with people all summer long. I have had many margaritas in Cancun and never had one as good as there.

For whats its worth, my recipe for a damn good margarita (though I have had better). 2 parts premium silver tequila 1 part Patron orange liquor 1 part fresh squeezed lime juice 1 part fresh squeezed orange juice Shake in good ice, if your tap water tastes bad, as it does here in Houston, buy good ice from the store......

for frozen ones I've used this: 1/2 cup fresh squeezed lime juice 1/2 cup powdered sugar ( not granulated ) 1/4 cup triple sec or cointreau 1/2 to 2/3 cup tequila of choice toss in a blender filled with ice for at least 1-1/2 minutes for mango, sub 1/3 - 1/2 cup mango nectar & reduce sugar portion by 1/3.

I would like to add that it helps to start with COLD ingredients. And, I mix mine in a wine carafe with a tight fitting lid. I shake the ingredients with ice then pour into prepared glass that also has a few cubes in it. (I don't care for frozen margaritas.) One more tip, kosher salt is essentially the same thing as margarita salt and can be purchased in most grocery stores. Elvee
