Part 3 After having a few drinks with Whale, we decided to go and grab some dinner at yes, Cuevo del Pescador- again. I was completely addicted to the “Don Julio” margaritas and the wonderful service from Carlos by then. Then it was off to bed. Early once again. Wake up for another early Akumal morning, this time to watch the sunrise. Well worth getting up early for. Breakfast at Turtle bay bakery that morning, and mine was borderline bad. Gokatgo’s breakfast burrito was average at best. I was disappointed. I should have gotten something freshly baked or gone to the Loncheria as we did most every other day Snorkeling at Yal- Ku was good and pretty clear on that day. The fish always put on a good show for us out there. Then we explored the trails around Yal KU and went back to the beach for some serious R&R. Then once again it is time for beer thirty. Right on time this day. We ran into Whale on the beach that late afternoon, and he told me horror stories of sharks and other monsters of the deep sea. Just what I need to hear; now I really don’t want to snorkel. Lol ha for drinks again, and then guess where for dinner, I’m officially addicted. After dinner we took a nice walk along the beach and made friends with a beach cat. There was almost a full moon that night so it was just beautiful. What a long day, and we are both just beat it must be really late. Yep, almost 9:00 Time for bed. Day four Well no snorkeling for maxiblnd today. After whale told me about Whitney seeing a shark in HMB, I am like NO WAY. Who knew I had shark phobia so bad?? Don’t you know my nickname is badass barb?? I aint scared of nothing. Except sharks and rays and big fish!!! Anyway the day started off nice, warm and sunny, we were up early as usual and decided to go to the Tulum Ruins that day we got there about 8:00 and there was no one around. Wow absolutely breathtaking views from the cliffs. The beach was closed off because Wilma had taken the first flight of stairs off, so it was blocked. We hired a guide for $20, he told us some very entertaining stories of the Mayans, and explained a lot of what we were looking at, it was 20 bucks well spent. After the ruins we were famished so we hit Zamas for breakfast. OMG!!! Not only is the beach there beautiful, the food was amazing and affordable. GoKat got the huevos rancheros and they were to die for. The best we ever had by far. After breakfast he did a little exploring around Tulum and found a little place called El Mirador all the way to the north. The place was up on a cliff overlooking the sea. Beach was pretty deserted, a couple backpackers here and there. Can’t beat the view. We stopped at the San Francisco grocery store to get some supplies, and good news there was a brand new ATM machine right next to the store. On the way back to Akumal we stopped at La Dona Isabel to do some shopping. Wound up buying some jewelry there, they had great stuff and really good prices. I would definitely go there again. The jewelry there is much cheaper than the Akumal jewelry store right next to Lol Ha. This is “THE” place to buy your souvenirs and trinkets to take back home, definitely better that screwing around in Playa By the time we got back to Akumal it was about….WHAT, that can’t be right…it’s 12:15!!! Let’s hit the Beach. Gokat snorkeled for a while, while I lay on the beach. He did track down the cannons that Pablo Bush Romero dumped in the bay, (hint, they’re tied to a buoy) he also spotted a turtle with a missing flipper but otherwise reported that visibility was very poor, DAMN YOU WILMA. We grabbed a quick lunch at Loncheria, Tacos de Puerco Asado are awesome, and cheap. Back to beautiful deserted Akumal Beach for the remainder of the afternoon, peace, quiet relaxation….and then we saw them…a family a big…loud family…and they were headed right for us…what are they doing….there’s nobody on the beach…why… are...they...putting…their…stuff…down…right…next…to…us….no, no, no, go away, go away. They were noisy, they were complaining and they were on my nerves, they had apparently escaped from an AI somewhere. There were 14 of them, I counted. They parked themselves, I kid you not, 5 feet from us. We were the only people on the beach between the beach bar and the dive shop. We didn’t know what to do, should we move? No that would be rude. We decided to stay put and wait them out. Sure enough after about an hour they left, as loudly as they had come, leaving cigarette butts and annoyed Kansans in their wake. Eventually Beer Thirty rolled around, we got cleaned up, grabbed the cooler and headed back to the beach for a few pre happy hour Montejo’s y Coronas. Then off to LBV for their grand reopening post Wilma. LBV cocktails were average they didn’t have Montejo so Gokat sucked it up and drank Dos Equis. We ran into Whale and his wife again at happy hour, it was super windy, to the point it was hard to communicate. Whale eventually went off to dinner at the Loncheria while we made plans to eat a pizza at the beach bar, (GoKat was getting sick of Cuevo). When we got to the Lol Ha, Whale and his wife were at a table and had just ordered, turns out the Loncheria closed early that night so we sat down and ate with them. The Lol Ha pizza was good, not great, but good. My husband and whale also talked about the quick sand they experienced at the north end of Akumal Bay, by Las Casitas. As if sharks and rays and big fish didn’t already freak me out now I have quick sand to worry about. Why am I such a wuss. After dinner, straight to bed. Tomorrow is the 11/12 LBV locogringo party, Hell Yeah.

ooooooooh Maxi! I feel so BAD!! it was a NURSE shark, not a DANGEROUS shark!! I will brave Maggie's wrath again as I describe it as a large bottom feeder like a gulp, CATfish. I hope you got in the water. I would feel sick if you didn't get in cuz of THAT thing!! I'm dying to hear more about that quicksand thing....and more about your wonderful adventure! Loncheria Rules!! ps beautiful picture!

Nice report! Yes, don't you hate it when the whole beach is empty and a family of 10 decides to move in with you, including the latest addition, little Tommy who is 10 months old and decides to entertain you with his screams and tantrums -- while proud (and deaf) Daddy and Mommy debate the merits of Dos XX vs. Sol for the fifth time in the last hour. Same thing happened to me twice during this last trip. I had my lounge chair under a palapa, with a lot of stuff on it (book, towel, hat...etc) and went diving. When I came back a couple of grand parents and kids had decided to move my chair, and take in some of the shade. Never mind that the beach was empty, and there was another perfect palapa about 45 feet away. I kindly asked them to move their stuff -- and they relented after much huffing and puffing. A larger family, including little Tommy, the second time around -- Americans both times. What is the deal with some people? Why do they feel the need to congregate like that? Safety in numbers? Afraid of those mean, Mexican land sharks? OK

We were at Chankanaab on Cozumel once and there was (I assume...sticking my neck out) a family off a cruise ship who were totally obnoxious. "Seenorrr! Seenorr! Anutha peena calaada...seenorr?!" "Jerrry!!....you're getting ice cream all over you're shoyt!!....Seenorrr!?" Can I get a napkin ovuh heeer!...Seenor?" "Seenor?!...my pineapple's leaking!"

I think what it comes down to is that we shouldn't ever tell any one about Akumal and if they ask make sure to have some sort of test to gauge their annoyance level.
