Other than going to the ruins a few times, we have not eaten at any restaurants in Tulum and definitely want to try some for our trip in December. We'd love a suggestion or two for some in the Pueblo and some on the beach. Thanks!

We ate lunch once at Don Cafeto, it is on the main street (ocean side) the food was good, but be careful with the salsa very Piquente!! (that would be d@mn hot!). It seems to be a popular breakfast spot and it always seems to be busy with locals and tourists.

Other than that the only place I've eaten near Tulum was at Oscars' Y Lalos, but I'm told after Emily they were totally wiped out. I don't know if or when they will rebuild

In town:

Don Cafetos is good - had an excellent fish dish around $6.50usd. They have good drinks - especially the lemonade and a green drink (pineapple, chaya - similar to spinach, lemon).

We ate Nero di Sole a lot - great pizzas and fresh-made pastas. On west side of 307.

Charlie's was good too for regional Mex food. It's near the end of the strip on the west side of 307.

On the beach:

Zamas - right before the paved road ends. Great pizzas and regional Mex.

Ana y Jose - has some American-style items for lunch. Dinner is more regioanl Mex. Great shrimp smothered in cilantro. Best drinks - margs and pina coladas.

Posada Margherita for an upscale romantic dinner. Kids are welcome too (we drag our's everywhere). Wonderful fresh-made pastas and seafood.

Just remembered another place....

Nachos on the beach - excellent regional food. My husband had steak and lobster. I thought the steak would be inferior, but he said it was quite good. I had shrimp tacos. Our kids had pan-fried chicken breast (made special for them). A lot of food!!!

It's north of the T.

The other places I listed on the beach are south of the T.

I talked about many of our meals in Tulum (on beach and in Pueblo) in my trip report. It's listed under the Trip Report Forum, titled "Tulum April 2005: Suenos de Tulum/Azulik (lots of food too!) " I also included prices for many of the meals. This may be helpful for you.

If you ever hear a reggae band there - tell the lead gituar player "Hi from Kerrena's uncle".

Thanks

Try this place. It's next to the City center Mayan Church. Don't ask me the street names......

Nine of us ate (stuffed ourselves) for $33.61

Just returned Tuesday night--ate at Charley's twice--good food, nice patio. Don Cafeto's has great food--eat the salsa, but don't lick your lips (habanero peppers). El Pequeno Buenos Aires--excellent beef, good drinks (only place that had Negra Modelo). Zamas was "off" the night we were there--service was horrible--we had to hunt our waiter down. El Paraiso on the beach was excellent--we went every day. Sin Ka'an resto at Villa Tulum (where we stayed) had excellet breakfasts; great guacamole and shrimp dishes for dinner.

Don Cafetos is a must in town. In the hotel zone, Ana y Jose's and La Piedra Escondida both had good food

For casual dining, Charlie's is in town, and they have fantastic mexican food. Don Cafetos in town is also great. (Don't be tempted by the Don Cafetos location on the beach, it's not as good)

On the Tulum beach, there is a Posada Margherita has amazing Italian food. Their pastas are light, fresh, and flavorful, it's definitely an experience not to miss! It is one of the only places in the area where you need a reservation (they only have seating for about 23).

For very nice meal, there is an amazing restaraunt called Hechizo way down the beach towards the entrance to the Sian Ka'an. We held our wedding dinner there. The food, service, and atmosphere there is unbelievable. Stephan is a world class chef, it is truly a gourmet meal! You may want to contact them ahead of time, since they close for the slow season.

ENJOY!

La Parilla-Argentinian grill located next to the fruit market on 307 (same side, across Beta street, on the left as you are going south). It can easily accommodate 12-we had a large family party there in November. The food is FANTASTIC especially after a week of local dinners-I had the best steak of my life there-the flank steak. The dinners came with grilled local veggies including chayote. Highly recommended!!!!
